I recommend you get packs for your doggos so they can carry their own food and some of their water. Keep things like bug spray in an easy-to-reach exterior pocket. Bugs love me, too. Seeing Mountain House dehydrated food is so nostalgic for me. I went on my first backpacking trip in the early 1970s, when I was in 5th grade. I took Mountain House food then. I had a miserable time, but saw some amazing things that are enjoyable memories to this day. I love seeing y'all living a bit outside the box! I recommend LMNT for hydration. I use it almost every day. Great taste, no sugar, no fake sugar. More backpacking ? Yes, please!

Dad of an Eagle Scout. Now a marine, decades of backpacking, some of the best memories with my son. Best tips I learned. Always get a free standing tent. She’s is absolutely correct on hanging a bear bag. Use switch back pants / shorts that are quick dry. Always bring lightweight net mosquito head cover just in case. Never drink unfiltered, or at least use “tableted or boiled water. Giardia is not something you want. Freeze dried is good but expensive. Ramen with can of crab meat, or tuna/salmon or chicken is cheap and yummy. A good sleeping pad and inflatable pillow are well worth the investment. Nikki is right, the serenity of backpacking is incredible. I do prefer doing it with friends, enjoy

Backpacking! I’m going to love this video.
Funny dog hates water story. I have a pit who used to chase our chickens, used to because I no longer have chickens, and she hated water of any depth. One day we took her to the lake and there was a “chicken” floating on the water. Since chickens can’t fly, she just knew she could catch the “chicken.” She took off swimming and hasn’t stopped since. Oh, yeah, she was shocked and terribly disappointed when the “chicken” flew away. To this day ducks are still “water chickens” to me and my grown children.

Hi Nikki.... Ahhh 17:17 and oooh 22:25! You are certainly in your element.
The visuals, gorgeous, "all of them"! The silence/quiet must of been so
peaceful & overwhelming."Nature appreciation" day? Oh yeah! Thank you Nikki.
Now my advice on backpacking, you ask? First, weather✔. Second, never
skip breakfast before a hike. Carbs/protein. Energy calories. Coffee?!
And I don't think you need new gear, Nikki, but to down size or eliminate
unneeded "stuff". Take bare essentials, esp. what keeps you safe & comfortable.
Also, always test your equip before you leave(I learned that the hard way too).
Or maybe a different backpacking scenario. Not the normal everyday
adventure? Forget worrying about the van, truck or car. Instead fly in (helicopter)
rappel down (w/gear) to a secluded area of your choice to explore.
Hike/swim(cold plunge)/camp/sleep. Discover other areas then backpack
out to be picked up and flown to your next adventure. Simple. Easy?.
Really enjoyed your video;-). Thanks Nikki... Steve...
    PS. To Camper....Let's go fishing!!

Excellent trip! One thing I learned the hard way, always, always have several ways to light the stove, those self igniting stoves are notorious for failing when needed and hot food/liquids could be the difference between comfort and misery and even survival. I eventually developed a small kit bag with emergency items like first aid, fire starters, medicines, bug dope, water tablets, etc.

If you want to get your bag lighter I would recommend going to Decathalon and getting some gear there as it is not too expensive and especially if you’re only really doing summer trips and not much winter trips Decathalon would be perfect for you they also have a really good tracking pole tent so if you wanted to try out poles it is a great way to not have to carry to poles as they can be very heavy I find the really helpful if you have knee or ankle problems it also put some of the weight off of your back/hips onto your hands which is good to distribute the weight throughout your body

Great video! Camper needs some packs to help out. As someone who gets bitten all the time (I am delicious!), I would keep the bug repellant stuff. Also, Caladryl Clear is a gel that really helps take the itch out of bites. Rinse or wash the bite area and apply, let it dry, and apply it again. It helps and you don't have pink spots all over! I also spray clothing, socks, shoes, hats, chairs, tents, practically anything that will help keep the buggies away!

Bug net. Use a bug net over your hat and shoulders. Also, wear long pants. Just not cotton jeans. Also, gaiters to protect your ankles. Tiny shorts and ankle socks may look good on video but it's not what experienced hikers would wear, especially in areas with mosquitos and heavy foliage.

Fun video. I like the strength training opportunity quote! I’m sure someone has already shared this but just in case no one has… the easiest way to lighten your load is the big three (pack, shelter, and sleep system). These are also the most expensive. But you can always chip away at the smaller things first like swapping Nalgene for smart water bottle, or your water filter for something lighter (Sawyer, BeFree, or Platypus). You can also swap things like stove, travel sized toiletries items, clothing, etc. As I get older these little things do make a big difference on distance and how much I get to enjoy my hikes. Post script: don’t forget a mini Bic lighter. If you’re ever visiting Yosemite, stop by the Ahwahnee and I’ll at least comp you a drink 😉 adventure on 🍻

I live over in the Sierra foothills near Jackson and the Highway 88 corridor also has a whole lot of wonderful places. My pittie also hates the water. It actually terrifies her. One more tip. After he graduated Cal State Sacramento, my son worked for Fish and Game and did biological survey's up in that area and I told him to always be prepared for rapid weather changes. Rain can come on quite rapidly up there it can get brutal. Never trust the water quality either.

TREKKING POLES!!! They make hikes so much better. 1. They help you on the climbs so your legs are not doing all the work. 2. They help on descents so not all the weight is on your knees. 3. Good for balance when scrambling over rough terrain.

You need to get on the LMNT bandwagon!! It works great for migraine prevention and treatment as well as giving you the electrolyte boost you need without the sticky sugar mess if you spill it. Try it with carbonated water for a special treat or get the canned product direct from LMNT. Black Cherry is the bomb!!❤

A fun video and a great overnight trip. Took too much stuff for only one night but hey, creature comforts!! Love your interaction with your dogs. I and my dog have gone soooo many places and camped together. One thing I might suggest is to check over your doggies for ticks. Those little Bast...rds live on grass and bushes and transfer to anything walking past and rubbing on the bushes to you!! Check yourself as well. My dog has inherited a couple in the past and I as well.

I highly recommend the Epic Nalgene OG water bottle. It provides as a filter for water and weighs less than Grayl. Side note - weighs less, cost less, saves time and will require less energy to filtrate water. Also recommend the Flextail pump it’s so small and will take no time to air your pad or pillow up. Also has a light fixture for a two in one purpose. Hope this helps and happy trails!

When blowing into the sleeping pad inflation bag, close the opening to about half of the way it is manufactured, kind of pinching it to keep the remainder open. Then, back your face up maybe two to four inches from the opening and THEN blow into the opening. Your blown air from a slight distance creates a venturi that fills the bag a LOT faster than just the air from your lungs when you blow right into the opening. Note, if you try this with the manufactured opening wide open, it won't get venturi, play with it a bit. Personally, I like to inflate mine all the way and let air out when I snuggle in, nudging the valve until it is just right. Easier than adding air after it's dark and I'm trying to get comfortable.

Usually 40 lbs is the norm for backpacking....having some packs for the dogs can elevate some of that weight. Also, freeze dried foods can also save weight. Bug repellant clothing (LL Bean has a lineup including leggings). It takes a few test trips to streamline your kit. Once you figure it out, it can be downright pleasant.

I stopped watching your content about a year ago. About 2 months ago I started to really get into backpacking and consuming just about anything TH-cam threw at me about it.
Then, you release this, and the algorithm knew exactly who your target audience was with me.
Keep it up Nikki! Definitely a proper fitting pack is crucial to trail comfort, as well as a deep personal discussion as to what you'll actually need on the trail. 38lbs is quite a bit too heavy, especially for a single solo night camping.
I look forward to seeing your adventures on the trail, and I guess on the road too.

Nice job! Always a couple things to change or improve upon but no greater teacher than trial and experience. Good job getting out there and doing it. A big saver for you is to hold your mouth further away from your pad pump sack, blow more gently. Fills the bag easier and faster. Bernoulli principle I believe.
Keep on backpacking. The boys seemed to have enjoyed it.
