What a beautiful cat. When I lived in Vermont my neighbors would not let their pets outside because of BobCats. I had a large Maine Coon Cat that was 35 pounds of solid muscle. He basically lived outside as I couldn't keep him inside. I saw him fight twice against Bob Cats and he was certainly a match for them. I didn't encourage my cat but I believe he knew how to survive. He was the smartest animal I ever had and he lived to be 15 years old. I still miss him so much.

I saw one of these in Arizona, and it just walked, looked at us and sat down, and we looked at it some more and that just got up and calmly walked away. It was beautiful, it’s eyes flex, gold, beautiful animal.
In rural north central Oklahoma, bobcats are common. A 500 gal. goldfish pond was put into our lawn and now it is aquatic plant pond due to our fish being important food source for bobcats and raccoons. During dry weather times, bobcats stroll through our yard during day to satisfy their thirsts. OK has hundreds of thousands of white tail deer where fawns are very likely to be taken by this attractive, athletic, smart cat. Thanks for this bobcat video.
As a self proclaimed outdoorsman, I have had the incredible privilege of observing bobcats in the wild. One memorable experience was a bobcat attacking a coyote pup and the mother coyote counter-attacking the bobcat. The bobcat ended up walking away with the coyote pup as dinner. Bobcats are beautiful, athletic, adaptable animals - IMO.
I stumbled upon two bobcat kittens wandering not to far away while walking my borzoi at the community college nearby during summer. We were the only ones around. They saw us and quietly slipped back into the brush. I knew they were bobcats because they had those short tails.
These are beautiful creatures but they haven't been domesticated for thousands of years like house cats. Keeping a wild animal as a pet is asking for trouble, because you cannot trust it further than you can throw it, no matter how friendly and cuddly it appears to be. I know some people have managed it, but that doesn't mean it's safe. Wild animals are best kept where they should be - in the wild.

There were several moms and kits in an area where we lived. They would walk around in daylight and up driveways, not a problem for them. Not afraid of people. As usual, the kittens are adorable…

Then, I thought someone's dog was taking dumps in my front yard, and it had to be a big dog too, but no! One day, I caught the culprit, and it was Ghillie herself. Bobcats are all over the place in my large suburban area of Phoenix, yet I only see one or two a yr if I’m lucky. I’ve never heard of a problem from them, but I have no doubt a small dog or cat would be done if the Bobby was desperate or weakened. Coyotes on the other hand are another story. If you feed them you’ll eventually regret it in one way or another. Both find golf courses ideal to raise families.
A friend had one that would visit his house everyday. one day he took a laser pointer and used it like you would play with a cat. the bobcat loved playing and trying to catch the light. One day after playing, the bobcat just came up to his chair and laid down right next to him. After about a week, my friend just reached down and started petting him, and the bobcat just laided there and enjoyed the petting. Then my friend tried catnip and the bobcat loved it.
Earl ran a Caterpillar building roads in the forests of Oregon. He found 2 kits whose mother had been killed by a vehicle. Earl took care of them through out there lives, that was about 10 years, they past away within a week of each other. Both of the cats went every where with Earl, work, to town and even on his vacations. They were never caged or penned up and always wore a bright collar. The cats weren't social animals and had been fixed to keep the from breeding with each other.

Bobcats are very widespread over North America but not mentioned is they have a huge competitor in the form of coyotes. Picture a coyote of similar size to the largest Bobcats, now add a whole pack of them. Coyotes are everywhere as well.

In the Catskill Mountains I would see evidence of jumps ten feet or more distance in the paw prints they made in snow and the prints did not sink far into the snow as they have big wide paws. It all depends were you live in the state of Washington, because, some areas might have its cousin the Lynx. The Lynx stay away from human population. I have seen Bobcats in areas of the city that I live in Washington, and they live near apartment complexes and they will kill house cats or make them have kittens. You got to be careful around trees if there been a Bobcat sighted in your neighborhood and don't let your house cat or cats go outside.

taniagoldman, Actually there are a number of differences. May I recommend that you do a search on "The difference between a Bobcat and a Lynx"? The will bring up several sites that compare the two to each other (in the one site). It's a little easier than trying to go from one site to another and making your own comparison. But to get you started, Lynx have long Tufts of fur, or hair, on the tips of their ears where Bobcats do not.
I live in a West Coast megalopolis and we have wildcats in and through our neighborhoods routinely. Most who've encountered them affirm they are mean as hell.
I much appreciate the realistic information about this animal's wildness quotient. Many people think any species can be tamed or domesticated, given enough patience with a very young animal. But that assumption is incorrect as applied to most species, including the cutest, cuddliest raccoon, opossum, mink, otter, fox, wolf, bear, big cat and all nonhuman primates. It is sometimes a tendentious proposition even with dogs, small cats & farm stock, becoming frankly contentious regarding reptiles, amphibians, passerine birds, salt-water fish and marine invertebrates. What makes us think any non-domesticated animal is ours to "own?" Sure, there are countless stories like "Born Free," but all of those are quirky, one-time circumstances that aren't repeatable just because they seem to promise a successful, cinematic life adventure. Much credit and admiration to this channel for daring to describe ownership of a wild species as unethical. Unless some contravening circumstances are at work, like a severely wounded or traumatized animal is rescued by professionals and deemed incapable of surviving outside the protection of that rescue compound, then procuring healthy, wild creatures for personal pets is indeed unethical, and plain selfish.
At 1:22 You start talking about their ears of which the 'black tufts' enhance their hearing... I would like to TOTALLY dispute that... Ear tufts don't enhance hearing but what they will do is detect breeze direction, which will indicate to the cat whether it is upwind or downwind from its prey...helping it to decide to adjust its point of approach when it hunts.
On a very hot day I encountered a bobcat on his last leg. He walked up to me and rolled over on his side. After a moment he managed to get up and staggered away. I thought about putting him out of his misery. But I didn't it still bothers me the pitiable state he was in. I'm not sure what caused his demise.
It's funny, but I've heard that a cougar would actually be easier to tame than a bobcat as bobcats are naturally more high strung whereas a cougar is actually more laid back by nature. Back to the bobcat though. Each cat has it's own temperament, just like house cats. Some domesticated house cats still just don't make good pets as they are still just too wild in character while others are perfect or nearly perfect to love as a pet. I am willing to venture that Bobcats, Lynxs and certainly cougars are the same. The individual temperament of the cat is the biggest factor rather than a blanket definition in determining whether or not that particular cat would be happy as a pet. Some would, some would not but if someone does they must be able to provide for it with lots of enrichment, love, proper foods, vet visits - the same as any cat lover does for their "domestic" cat.
Cheetahs have been domesticated for several thousand years. The Egyptians used them for hunting. Despite its size this cat is the closest to domestic feline in its behavior towards humans.

I feel sorry for Cheetahs having to live in the wild, everything can harm or kill them. Jack Hanna once said Cheetahs are not powerful cats. To gain that speed, they gave up all other 'powers' including retractable claws and muscular builds.
Not mentioned in this one sided video is bobcats can be easily domesticated if they are caught very young. Even on youtube there are examples of people with bobcat pets that show how closely they can bond with humans. Of course cats found in the wild should be avoided.
You should NEVER NEVER NEVER domesticate as a pet a wild animal, even one taken at a young age. Wild animals belong in the wild and nowhere else. In Europe, thankfully, our regulations prohibit the detention of wild animals as pets. Unfortunately, in the US, you can acquire just about anything, including lions and tigers, legally or illegally. There is basically very little control, to the point that unscrupulous people even breed wild animals in captivity (see Joe Exotic). Why would you want to own a bobcat as a pet? Definitely not for its own benefit, but just so you can look "special" by showing off with it. Despicable.

They are great cats, a great many live in. The Northwest Territories of Canada As a former Trapper, when I see one, I see dollar bills. Fact: these cats are very probably, have more lice than any other animal. Fact: these cats are, next to the Wolverine, one of the easiest animals to trap. For either one, all you need is the Urine of a Moose in Rut, soak some Cat Nip Seeds, in the Urine. Bait your set, with that, these cats are yours. My best was eight cats in one month, from two sets.

I stumbled upon two bobcat kittens wandering not to far away while walking my borzoi at the community college nearby during summer. We were the only ones around. They saw us and quietly slipped back into the brush. I knew they were bobcats because they had those short tails.
These are beautiful creatures but they haven't been domesticated for thousands of years like house cats. Keeping a wild animal as a pet is asking for trouble, because you cannot trust it further than you can throw it, no matter how friendly and cuddly it appears to be. I know some people have managed it, but that doesn't mean it's safe. Wild animals are best kept where they should be - in the wild.

I’ve lived in the country most of the life. Last month, I saw one for only the second time and the after 30 years of the first sighting.
The tufts are to prevent the tips of the ears from freezing in the winter. Had the opportunity to pet one, the fur is incredibly soft and thick.

I'm in rural Nova Scotia and we have one hanging around, it got 7 chickens and a domestic cat from my brother, next door.. lots of woods and ponds/Brooks nearby. I haven't seen it, but I keep my pet cat close

I haven’t seen one in several years, but there was one I saw multiple times walking casually up or down my quarter-mile long driveway in northeast Pennsylvania. Always made sure the dog was inside then.
There were several moms and kits in an area where we lived. They would walk around in daylight and up driveways, not a problem for them. Not afraid of people. As usual, the kittens are adorable…
I’ve had several close encounters with them over the years and all they’ve ever shown is curiosity. I suppose they would be dangerous to a squirrel or a rabbit.
Bobcats love Purina Cat Chow! My Russian Blue got knocked up by a mixed breed back in the late 90's, and that little spawn of Satan went through an 18# bag by herself, every two weeks. Then, I thought someone's dog was taking dumps in my front yard, and it had to be a big dog too, but no! One day, I caught the culprit, and it was Ghillie herself. That cat was leaving turds the size of a German shepherd's.
Growing up, we were always told that Bob cats are shy, but never corner one. It will maul you. It's always exciting to see one. Thankfully, my state outlawed owning "exotic" pets and it's taken seriously.
There are about 1500 bob cats here in New Hampshire their screams are terrifying.

Bobcats are all over the place in my large suburban area of Phoenix, yet I only see one or two a yr if I’m lucky. I’ve never heard of a problem from them, but I have no doubt a small dog or cat would be done if the Bobby was desperate or weakened. Coyotes on the other hand are another story. If you feed them you’ll eventually regret it in one way or another. Both find golf courses ideal to raise families.
A friend had one that would visit his house everyday. one day he took a laser pointer and used it like you would play with a cat.

Bob cats do not have tufts on their ears. Only lynx have tufts on their ears and are larger than bobcats
Earl ran a Caterpillar building roads in the forests of Oregon. He found 2 kits whose mother had been killed by a vehicle. Earl took care of them through out there lives, that was about 10 years, they past away within a week of each other. Both of the cats went every where with Earl, work, to town and even on his vacations. They were never caged or penned up and always wore a bright collar. The cats weren't social animals and had been fixed to keep the from breeding with each other.
My dogs have treed several and have never tried to be aggressive just jump out of the tree and run away

I used to live in Southern Arizona, the bobcat got into my chickens and I had a lot of losses. I did have a big Rhode Island Red rooster that gave them hell though.
They should remain wild.
Bobcats are very widespread over North America but not mentioned is they have a huge competitor in the form of coyotes. Picture a coyote of similar size to the largest Bobcats, now add a whole pack of them. Coyotes are everywhere as well.
There was a time when I would get home at night, and I would hear an cat snarling at me when I got home. I went out one night with a shotgun looking for it but I never saw anything. It might have been one of these.

In the Catskill Mountains I would see evidence of jumps ten feet or more distance in the paw prints they made in snow and the prints did not sink far into the snow as they have big wide paws. I also would find the grizzly looking remains of wild turkeys in trees that Bobcat 's would leave after eating . The eyes of Bobcats have pupils that seem more round than any of my house cats slit like eyes.
I once was sleeping outside in the desert and woke up at 1 am to a bobcat that bumped into me as I turned over. I was so shocked and so was the bobcat. It walked away for about 8 feet then looked at me and snarled and then walked away.
Bob cats (or Robert cats) do have a specialized diet which is why they shop at Whole Foods.

It all depends were you live in the state of Washington, because, some areas might have its cousin the Lynx. The Lynx stay away from human population. I have seen Bobcats in areas of the city that I live in Washington, and they live near apartment complexes and they will kill house cats or make them have kittens. You got to be careful around trees if there been a Bobcat sighted in your neighborhood and don't let your house cat or cats go outside.
There is a rabbit warren behind my house that attracts bobcats.
Incredibly adaptable for sure but calling dangerous I reserve for animals that have more mass or occasionally add humans to their diet.

Actually there are a number of differences. May I recommend that you do a search on "The difference between a Bobcat and a Lynx"? The will bring up several sites that compare the two to each other (in the one site). It's a little easier than trying to go from one site to another and making your own comparison.
But to get you started, Lynx have long Tufts of fur, or hair, on the tips of their ears where Bobcats do not.
They should be let out in the Fla Everglades to help fight the snake problem!

I much appreciate the realistic information about this animal's wildness quotient. Many people think any species can be tamed or domesticated, given enough patience with a very young animal. But that assumption is incorrect as applied to most species, including the cutest, cuddliest raccoon, opossum, mink, otter, fox, wolf, bear, big cat and all nonhuman primates. It is sometimes a tendentious proposition even with dogs, small cats & farm stock, becoming frankly contentious regarding reptiles, amphibians, passerine birds, salt-water fish and marine invertebrates.
What makes us think any non-domesticated animal is ours to "own?" Sure, there are countless stories like "Born Free," but all of those are quirky, one-time circumstances that aren't repeatable just because they seem to promise a successful, cinematic life adventure.
Much credit and admiration to this channel for daring to describe ownership of a wild species as unethical. Unless some contravening circumstances are at work, like a severely wounded or traumatized animal is rescued by professionals and deemed incapable of surviving outside the protection of that rescue compound, then procuring healthy, wild creatures for personal pets is indeed unethical, and plain selfish.

At 1:22 You start talking about their ears of which the 'black tufts' enhance their hearing... I would like to TOTALLY dispute that... Ear tufts don't enhance hearing but what they will do is detect breeze direction, which will indicate to the cat whether it is upwind or downwind from its prey...helping it to decide to adjust its point of approach when it hunts.
They also serve a decorative function

On a very hot day I encountered a bobcat on his last leg. He walked up to me and rolled over on his side. After a moment he managed to get up and staggered away. I thought about putting him out of his misery. But I didn't it still bothers me the pitiable state he was in. I'm not sure what caused his demise.

It's funny, but I've heard that a cougar would actually be easier to tame than a bobcat as bobcats are naturally more high strung whereas a cougar is actually more laid back by nature. Back to the bobcat though. Each cat has it's own temperament, just like house cats. Some domesticated house cats still just don't make good pets as they are still just too wild in character while others are perfect or nearly perfect to love as a pet. I am willing to venture that Bobcats, Lynxs and certainly cougars are the same. The individual temperament of the cat is the biggest factor rather than a blanket definition in determining whether or not that particular cat would be happy as a pet. Some would, some would not but if someone does they must be able to provide for it with lots of enrichment, love, proper foods, vet visits - the same as any cat lover does for their "domestic" cat.

Cheetahs have been domesticated for several thousand years. The Egyptians used them for hunting. Despite its size this cat is the closest to domestic feline in its behavior towards humans.

I feel sorry for Cheetahs having to live in the wild, everything can harm or kill them. Jack Hanna once said Cheetahs are not powerful cats. To gain that speed, they gave up all other 'powers' including retractable claws and muscular builds.
Not mentioned in this one sided video is bobcats can be easily domesticated if they are caught very young. Even on youtube there are examples of people with bobcat pets that show how closely they can bond with humans. Of course cats found in the wild should be avoided.
You should NEVER NEVER NEVER domesticate as a pet a wild animal, even one taken at a young age. Wild animals belong in the wild and nowhere else. In Europe, thankfully, our regulations prohibit the detention of wild animals as pets. Unfortunately, in the US, you can acquire just about anything, including lions and tigers, legally or illegally. There is basically very little control, to the point that unscrupulous people even breed wild animals in captivity (see Joe Exotic).
Why would you want to own a bobcat as a pet? Definitely not for its own benefit, but just so you can look "special" by showing off with it. Despicable.

Second, a bobcat has a short stumpy tail, while all the other cats, large and small, have a long one.
