    Its a great tuning for sure. What I struggled with is that I found myself writing the same (or at least very similar) sounding riffs over and over again. I wasnt really able to find different "moods" with this tuning. I always ended up with TMP-style themes. After a year I went back to Eb-standard and Drop Db which I found more versatile in the long run.

      I feel this. Every time I see a Midwest emo band, they're always messing around with tunings. There is usually a break or two in the set where they retune their guitar. Probably because you can only get so much out of this kind of tuning.
      It's great for what it does though!

    • @Gummmibaer
      @Gummmibaer 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@chrismaghintayyeah you either have to bring a lot of guitars or retune which can really take some time and not every type of guitar string likes this. Breaking strings and being out of tune all the time are fatal in a live setup.
      We need a better version of the Gibson Robo tuner Back which is able to switch alternate tunings in no time😅

      Sometimes I worry that all the riffs that I write sound too similar. But it’s kind of wild how basically all (if not all) of Dylan’s songs are in this tuning and yet each on stands by itself

      Something I love to do with alternate/open tunings is playing standard chord shapes. you can get some gnarly sounding stuff that way. Some is dissonant of course (which I personally like) but you can also get some really big, harmonic chords if you move it to the right spot

      It depends on what you want to do. If strumming quick and easy beautiful chords is the goal then you've nailed it! If versatility and growth as a musician over time is the goal then you might want to reconsider standard tuning.

      @YodatheHobbit 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, it's fucking cheating. Having fun with it is fine(same and drop D), but if a band were to use this tuning for ALL of their songs I would not respect them.
      It's like using a Chorus petal, ALL the time. The sounds of the octaves hide your mistakes.

    • @AimingWanderously

      @@YodatheHobbit I don't think any band would use this ALL the time, like a band that uses drop D ALL the time, well, it's noticeable. Any alternate tuning is simply another color brush in the toolbox, it is fun to stimulate creativity. It is not cheating.

    I've been using this same tuning but one whole step down (CGDGBD) since the late 90s, it's so much fun. I stole it from Sonic Youth, they used it a lot on A Thousand Leaves and the albums before and after. Another cool variant (that SY also use) is to drop the high E so that it's in unison with the next string (CGDGBB / DAEAC#C#).

    When I saw Jackson Browne’s solo tour many years ago he had a grand piano, electric piano and 15 acoustic guitars onstage. He told us to just yell out our requests (very cool) and he would select a specific guitar to play. As a guitarist myself, I could tell he was using a variety of tunings, some of the same tunings in a variety of different keys. 15 AG’s on one long custom built wooden rack on wheels. It was so cool. It was like we were at his house and he was pulling favorite wines from his cellar for us to try. Only ever saw that once in my 50+ years of concert going. Awesome.

      Joni is the Queen of tunings! Now I have a GR 55 guitar synth and a Godin electric that can digitally change the pitch of my strings through MIDI. No floppy strings even in baritone mode! It actually sounds really great. I love to play songs using a regular tuning for the verse and then instantly changing to a broad modal tuning for the chorus. It’s subtle but it sounds awesome.

    As mentioned by others, everything can start coming out very similar sounding with alternative tunings and if you dont want to dedicate a guitar to each tuning a la Sonic Youth then it can be a hassle retuning all the time. I suggest the spider capo which is a partial and customizable capo. My song As I Lay Dying on Soundclick uses a spider capo for the entire song set as a droning Em. Em and A are the most obvious applications of the spider capo but there are a lot of other things you can do with a little imagination. Plus, once you are done experimenting you pop off the capo and you are back to standard tuning. The spider capo also has the ability to mute certain strings which opens up a lot of other possibilities. BTW I dont work for spider capos. My first capo like this was actually by another brand called Third Hand Capo which is pretty similar, used to be a bit cheaper and might suit some people better.

    I love tunings like this. Open Dmaj9(no3).
    If you want a 3rd, you can drop the G string (tuned to A3 in the video) down to F# or F. This would change the tuning to Dmaj9 or Dm/maj9 respectively.

    My magical tuning for effortless beautiful chords is G-D-d-f-g#-b (fifth string is lowest). If one places fingers according to the recipe "Place index finger across 5 strings; cover 0-3 strings with the middle finger on the next fret, 0-3 strings with the ring finger on the fret above that, and 0-2 with the pinky on the fret above that, most arrangements will be usable chords. For some chords, extending the index finger to the sixth string would add a useful note, and for some it wouldn't, but simply strumming the top 5 strings is easier than having to use the left hand to mute a string that's strummed.
    I'm partial to my Flat Finger Tuning in particular, but the idea of swapping the bottom two strings would probably open up a lot of possibilities for other tunings as well. I'd be interested in knowing what you think.

    I arrived by accident about 25 minutes ago. I've got to tell you that his opening statement is only "NEARLY true". You can hit great stuff 8 times in a row, and THEN you try something that WOULD work on a standard tuning and then there's HORROR! and because you've never been here before you don't know how to recover ! ONLY hurriedly barring the whole set of open strings will allow you to bail in a way that appears competent. It's a mine field, where 24 of the squares you could stand on are glorious and 8 of them will out you instantly as a morally corrupt, and CONTEMPTIBLE human being.
    There is much light to be found here, but the extreme opposite lurks nearby in unknown places . Don't be fooled by his confident smile, DANGER LURKS! BEWARRRRRRE

    Nice . I have been a big fan of guitar and instrument tunings. Problems though can arise in small band guitar groups . Familiar tones to another person playing bass or guitar have to modify their ear and physical hand shapes from someone playing another guitar across from them in jamming area . Depending on music style eg- Blue Grass . Modified Dobro tunings , Mandolin, Fiddles etc. Country - Steel Guitars , Lap steels . All can be challenging and interesting at the same time.

    The problem I have with this tuning is that I can't play music that sounds depressing (lol), and that's my go-to sound. Everything I come up with in D-A-E-A-C#-E sounds too happy! 🤣
    Certainly fine if you want to make happy indie pop and pop punk sound _even_ happier.

    • @Handles_are_garbage
      @Handles_are_garbage 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My thoughts exactly: if it sounds automatically beautiful, does that make it harder to make stuff sound ugly? I need a bit of both, or I get bored.

    • @bveracka
      @bveracka 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Handles_are_garbage That's why I've always stuck with variations on standard tuning; just go flat a half or a whole step. Nothing else can really allow me the freedom to shape all of the chords I want to play - and change keys - as easily as standard tuning can.
      A lot of these alternate tuning videos are aimed at beginners who are frustrated by not being able to make cool sounds yet, and that's fine.

      try tuning the low E to F, so it makes it more minor. If you don't like that sound, then also tune the C# down to C or B.

    My greatest tuning, ACOUSTIC GUITAR- Remove D and high E, and tune F# C# C# F# . Do it with vocals for a month, you'll probably leave a spare guitar tuned this way forever.

    Theres a reason standard tuning has stood the test of time. These tunings are always fun but eventually they get old imo. And another commentor is correct, they make riffs sound very samey if you overuse the tuning

    Almost the same as what I was taught to be Robert Johnson's secret tuning where he would play facing the wall instead of the audience so his competing musicians wouldn't be able to backwards engineer the tuning. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it was e b e a c sharp d. Believe I learned it in guitar player magazine.

    If i may, and you can afford it, by the palm benders or the one for the g only, or third string. Yhe other tjong you csn do it take a capo and cut away points for your major notes. This would leave some strings in the upper pitch
