How i missed this one i dont know Glenn, but as i just picked up a bargain i could not pass it up NIB 2014 re-re for bonkers cheap now ive got 3 SRB Tamiya's in the collection and hoping i will come across the the hi-lux too at some point but great video as always and now going to watch part 2 🙂
I love Tamiya cars iv used to have manta ray and the mud blaster back in the 90s but I never built one my self I got shop to build mine ..i got to build one my self one day.
I always remember the Super Champ being the most expensive of all the SRBs and one of the most expensive Tamiya cars next to the 3 speeds the likes of the Blazin Blazer and Toyota Hilux
The original had a metal plate under the chassis to help that flex you talk about...I've still got my original champ bought in 82...I was 9yr old at the time and thought I'd won the pools (lottery)...love these old cars 👍
That's the most beautifull RC buggy ever no wonder it inspired th Tyco Turbo Hopper ! Some say the Tyco was a cheap 1/18 copycat : i'd say they wanted to make sure it will be a hit so they took the best inspiration avalaible !
I had one back in 1983 cost me $250 Australian the servos and receiver used small balloons over them to water proof them that and a bit of silicone sealer and tie raps downside/problems very heavy, 1100 nicad batery on quick charge took 30 minutes and only got 5 min run time ah good times
Yup the run time was brutal. I dug a rc track in the backyard and it didn’t even make a quarter of the track. Too heavy, meanwhile my cousin’s ultra light hornet did a few laps. 😑
Every video I watch on these makes me drool, whether it’s a re issue or an original. SRB is sand rail buggy. While not the best buggy chassis Tamiya made, it’s by far the coolest, and most legitimate to real sand buggies made from actual vw’s .. I’ll likely never get a chance to own one , but a feller can dream right. 😁
This was the first RC I ever drove, my dad got it in the original release. My uncle got the Grasshopper, and my grandfather got the Audi Quattro that same Christmas.
Ford Ranger was my favourite too Glenn. Love your Tamiya history lessons my friend, superb!! Always an education and a pleasure to watch. Thumbs up bud!
My Younger brother got one of these 1983 $750 by the time all the parts / batteries, chargers and Tx Rx were bought lol ( kit box was $200? ), i asked for a 12 speed bike $190 in 1983 :) ... Brother knew what he was asking, $750 in 1983 dollars ouch ! (make up for it now though 2020 IFMAR 1/8 scale nitro's etc)
A guy who worked at a local hobby shop here in the quad cities was a designer or cad guy for Tamiya when these were developed. He said that the engineers and Tamiya brass used to visit Baja and research the buggies and beetles and trucks and took ideas from the real race cars and scaled them down into the models. The shock system was actually used by real Baja racers, however it was nitrogen in the tank and lines vs oil. Similar to modern monster truck shocks, but with 1 big tank for all the shocks. Just like the real race buggies, these were designed and built by a bunch of good ol boys who loved racing
Tamiya guy I started as a kid with the lunchbox was the first kit I ever built in 7th grade then I went to the Tamiya HI LUX live that one probably like 90-91. And some racing buggies the turbo ultima was my best car. Got back into the hobby. To me it’s funny ESC come stock now that was a big deal back in the day. But anyway got the WLTOYS 124019 . I call it purple hase not very original but hey I like it. Anyway a bit long I do love Tamiya though....
I never seen a rear shock like that before it trippy. at first i thought it was a fuel tank but i see the cable for the motor tripped me out for a few mins lol
Thanks for the video. I only had one of these in pieces as a kid. Cool to see it in obe piece. If you could find a tamiya hunter that would be awesome. Was my last tamiya before i moved onto the losi jrx2.
Wolfgang Kovac There ok for it classic design, but in my opinion the ORV is much better to drive. I’m actually posting my vintage Frog running video on Saturday 😎👊🏻 Thanks for watching buddy
I got one of the first kits in California in 82 and it took days to assemble it with all the tiny screws! It was on par with Rough Riders that had been modded right out of the box. Once I put a Black motor in it began to shed parts and break fittings and the car slowly evolved to keep it together at the Track. Ditched the rear shock and ran duel shocks, dumped the metal Pan and built a fiber one and saved weight where I could with help from Joe at ProLine......I still have the car but the RC-10 came out and the next leap forward was made and the process repeated!
My friend in Japan told me that Tamiya was going to call it fighting buggy back in the day. Thats why when you check the stamping underneath the original body set it says f buggy.
When im on ebay looking at kits im shocked at the price of allot of re release kits i have seen the frog rere kit for 300 us dollars and i bought an original for 75$ that was in good shape i always wondered why some kits are so much
@@philthyco1 And yet they still design there cars around the old 7.2v nicad packs , and with all the shapes and sizes that Lipos come in they choose not to really entertain the old stick pack shape ..................
I think it means Sand rail buggy :-) A Sand Scorcher kit is only £290 in the UK

Excellent thank you 😊 I know I really should of known that lol 😬
Special Racing Buggy.
@@anthonyborg2022 think you are right Anthony, it stands for Special Racing Buggy 👍
@@anthonyborg2022 Thats the one Anthony 🙂
SRB - Special Racing Buggy ( official. ) Great Super Champ....👍.
Such a good looking car, companies should make buggies that look like this now with updated technology!

I just love the older Tamiya and Kyosho cars with the beautiful metal parts and 3 piece wheels 😎
YES , GOOD VIDEO , MY DAD WAS BRITISH CHAMP , IN 1984.👍👍
mark alsop
Oh wow that’s very cool Mark 😎👊🏻
Cool video! SRB = Special Racing Buggy.
I just love seeing the old tamiya kits cool 😇
Fighting Buggy is the name the original Japanese model had. It was called Super Champ in overseas markets.
I love Tamiya cars iv used to have manta ray and the mud blaster back in the 90s but I never built one my self I got shop to build mine ..i got to build one my self one day.

Definitely nothing cheap of the super champ whatsoever. All metal and super expensive

😁👍Beauty of a buggy right there!! Great video!
Special Racing Buggy
Nice buggy!! Let's see it run!
Damn that buggy as a cool looking rear end!
That shock set up it the rear is crazy it is a really flexible chassis thanks for showing it off very interesting
Ford Ranger was my favourite too Glenn. Love your Tamiya history lessons my friend, superb!! Always an education and a pleasure to watch. Thumbs up bud!
Tamiya is supposedly re-releasing this buggy again.
My Younger brother got one of these 1983 $750 by the time all the parts / batteries, chargers and Tx Rx were bought lol ( kit box was $200? ), i asked for a 12 speed bike $190 in 1983 :) ... I once heard/read "Fighting Buggy" was it's name in Japan at the time of its release in the States as the Super Champ.
They don't make them like that these days....real metal! 😃 That belongs on the top shelf.
Great video! 👌
This would look awesome sitting next to the Ruff Rider
Yeah two absolute classics from the Tamiya timeline 🤩👊🏻
So fund memories of this one, really want one!

What a great review~!!!👍👍👍
Tamiya USA has these in stock again for $462 usd
"Turbo" Tony.K
I love the names Tamiya gave the drivers.
This is probably wayyy to late 😂, but from what I can tell it's missing the alu plate on the bottom to help with that flexing 👍
what do these drive like in comparison to an orv? looks heavier but with a better geometry.

I enjoyed reading that my friend 👊🏻. Thanks for watching buddy
This particular kit never came with the plastic box for the battery and electrics, that was only on the Sand Scorcher, Rough Rider and Ford Ranger
great chanel
The Fighting Buggy was a limited release, that mite explain the price rise.
yeah from $300-$1200 on eBay!
I think sellers on eBay are either high or way too drunk when they list prices.
I remember that chassis as the ford ranger. It was a pig to keep going!!! I remember needing a constant supply of grub screws
The sand scorcher rere had the water proof housing? But they didn't do the same on this buggy?
Darth Vader
Did it 🤔
I’ll have to check that out 👊🏻

sausage in a roll in a box for me! s.r.b search it up!
I have a vintage Tamiya fox 1985-6 and I'm looking for an original body stickers and wing, would you have any ideas where I could find one? Thank you
The suspension on these things is basically VW Beetle suspension.
Have they took this back off the market!?
Or have I missed something . 🙈
CiganoBoxer
They getting harder to find again 😬. And I’ve also noticed there getting really expensive 😭
TAMIYA Legends got to be honest mate I’m a bit like you I prefer the Ranger over the rough rider and Super champ etc .
When im on ebay looking at kits im shocked at the price of allot of re release kits i have seen the frog rere kit for 300 us dollars and i bought an original for 75$ that was in good shape i always wondered why some kits are so much
I used to have a kyosho gas buggy that had a very similar chassis
Ron Bernard
Excellent Ron, I think I know the buggy you mean, did it have a Blue frame?
I had one in grade school. It was all metal, too heavy for the battery to last only 5 minutes?! 😑 $500 Canadian back in the 1986
thread lock all screws, don't go too fast, it just turn over.
When's this first released?
Mat Bell
1979 I believe 🤔
Its pretty cool! thanks @@TAMIYALegends
rear suspension looks great
sadly it doesnt work
the earlier buggy champ suspension works much better
but still pretty terrible
Sealed radio box....idk
fit the front shocks upside down
Rebuilding an original ranger one now

When is Tamiya going to start fitting there chassis for lipo batteries ? Many thanks .................
