  • @colibri1
    @colibri1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    People always think of Freddie and his appearance when they hear Queen now, but back in the seventies when this song and other Queen songs came out, videos were not yet a thing (that would be in the eighties) and the majority of listeners only heard the songs on the radio and didn't associate them with Freddie the personality, only with the band's name and with hard rock in general. Most people didn't even know anything about Freddie at all, not even what he looked like. Now, it's very different. It's kinda like people know more about Freddie than they do about Queen.

    "The ABC Song", like "Twinkle Twinke, Little Star", is based on a French song called "Ah! vous dirai-je, maman", which is in turn based on an anonymous pastoral song from around 1740. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart also famously dropped a piano remix in the 1780s sometimes referred to as "12 variations", just to flex on the French.

    Queen was one of the first big Bands to play in the huge stadiums. Around 70,000 to 90,000 PLUS the big outdoor concerts where they would often play to crowds of 150 to 200,000. They wanted some songs that involved the crowd and came up with "We will rock you" and "We are the Champions". Not the sole reason for writing them but they fitted perfectly into that style of presentation.

    You are definitely not alone, and the ABC's is a good comparison! Both We Are The Champions and We Will Rock You feel so anthemic and integrated in day to day culture that we grow up knowing them, and it feels like they've just always existed somehow. I too had a moment (don't remember when, it was awhile ago) that I realized both were by Queen and it blew my mind.

    We Will Rock You is probably another song you didn't realize Queen wrote.

    Loved your surprised reaction. There are probably several songs you have heard and didn't know was Queen. I think you would enjoy Princes of The Universe and Who Wants to live Forever. These songs were written for the movie Highlander. You should watch the official video for Princes of the Universe because it is really cool and had the lead actor from the movie, (Christopher Lambert) in it and listen to Who wants to live forever live from Budapest. It is a great version and I love watching Queen live. The Official video is good also though.

    Every child who won something and made fun of the loser would sing Na na, na na na. Na na, na na na
    Freddie took that melody and used it in the chorus (No time for losers cause we are the champions), it's why everyone can relate to it. Very clever.
