- Midway Atoll, Northwest Hawaiian Islands, North Pacific Ocean.
May 8, 2010.
Two Non-breeding Laysan albatrosses perform an intricate courtship dance with Midway Atoll's turquoise lagoon serving as backdrop. The earsplitting whistles, braying, rooster-like crows and bill clacking you will hear are all part of Laysan albatrosses' wonderful dance. The birds' courting episodes can last for hours, even being performed through the night.
Images of Midway Atoll's albatrosses plus other birds photographed by Gina Ruttle aka Whalegeek are available for sale as cards, framed prints, canvas mountings and posters at RedBubble.com through her Whalegeek portfolio www.redbubble.c.... . I welcome your visit to my portfolio to view my whales, bears, birds and other photographic art.
Watched this in person on Midway in the 1970’s, while aboard the USS Reclaimer ARS 42, between tours in Vietnam. This tiny island was so restful. The birds were constant like the breeze, the white sand and surrounding blue water. I feel so lucky to have been in the right place at the right time. All those years ago, yet it’s fresh in my memories to this day. I’m certain that others of those times, remember this amazing dance in an amazing place.
Albatross are perfect example of loyal and true love ❤️
Thanks soooooo much for just letting nature be nature so we can hear those wonderful mating calls. . . :}
I love it when they stop to itch
That is part of the dance
Oh
They’re quickly checking their smartphones.
It's not for an itch I guess it's on rhythm so it's a part of dance
I never knew I needed this in my life right now. Also for quarantine schoolwork my teacher forced my class to watch this
Human Being I think you may be in my class then
Human Being Are you from Mossley PS bc we have the same stuff
Been there many many times when the US Coast Guard operated the LORAN station on nearby Kure Island. Always remember the CLACK CLACK noise they would make when you walked too close to them. They were all over the place. Always got a little scary landing and taking off in our USCG C-130 with all the Gooney birds flying all over. They could break a windscreen or damage an engine.
I wish I know what are the meanings of each move they do in that mating dance ^^
this is the amazing birds and the amazing dance
Amazing performance
Forget those small parrot-like so called "lovebirds" . What we see here is the real lovebirds : ALBATROSSES

Hi I lived on midway as a child from 1970 thru the end of 73. My dad a naval officer. I don't see any of the rusty wreckage of the fighter planes scattered along the shoreline from the end of the airstrip to the naval station where my dad works. I attended school at george cannon starting at 4th grade. The island does allow dogs but no other animals especially cats. On my sschool field trip we got into a old tugboat and went to Eastern island. The iisland is deserted except of course the albratross

Hello! I'm a radio reporter at KQED Public Radio and I'm doing a story on albatross' for Valentines Day. Would we be able to use the sound of your video for our radio story? If so, we would credit you in the online story. You can reach me at scraig@kqed.org to respond. Thanks!
