- Local 7 Ironworkers out of South Boston, MA have toiled since February 2010 to build the support towers of a unique center span lift bridge over the Chelsea River between Chelsea and Boston, Massachusetts.
Employed by Saugus Construction Corp. , under lead contractor, J.F. White Contracting Co. they have assembled, erected and bolted up almost 2500 tons of steel.
At the demand of the US Coast Guard the 75 year old Chelsea Street Bridge, built by Bethlehem Steel, has been deemed an threat to Massachusetts' fuel supply and must be replaced.
The new $125million bridge will have a 175 foot lifting height with a 450 foot wide span to accept any size ship along the Chelsea River. The new bridge is expected to open in April 2012.

One of your best videos yet! I have a huge amount of respect for the Iron workers and all the union trades that help make bridges and other large structures a reality. Often the products of their labor long outlives them, not many of us can say that.
The American "Union" Ironworker!
great job once yet again Stephen!
your videos keep getting better and better!
Nice vid brothers! Local 40 here.
Great job, as usual Steve!
@biginchhemi These rodbusters work really hard the entire time they are on-site day or night. The amount of working the iron, driving pins, torquing, lifting, climbing, swinging the beater they do is really amazing. I have such respect for them and have been honored to capture their craft.
Nice job bolting up Bruce.

Great video brother, from 721 Toronto
Sorry, bud, you've got your terminology wrong. The guys featured in this vid are most definitely NOT rodbusters! Rodbusters are the ones who place the reinforcing steel (read: rebar) and post-tensioning for concrete pours.. Hence the name, "rod"buster. They work just as hard as the bridge/structural Ironworkers you show in this vid, just in a completely different way. It's so different that many cities have a completely separate local for the rodbusters. Ironworkers Local 17, Cleveland, OH
Easy to bolt up on a lift!!
@ssdphoto agreed, and few skilled OE's,and skilled Ironworkers make the difference on any big job like this.OE 721
