    When I think of Timemore I think of hand grinders, but they're now taking the plunge into the premium electric market with the new Sculptor series. In this video I'll be going over the 064s, which seems to bring features like adjustable RPM, 64mm flat burrs, and a metal unibody to the home coffee bar at a bargain of a price tag.

      @@mszigetihu I have an older generation of the "budget" Black Mirror, I'm fairly happy with it, but it does have a bit of "self-adjust" once one does adding weight; it also has quite noticeable negative "drift". I can't afford the smart scale version (and, really, who needs a smart scale?)

    At the kickstarter price point and all the highlights you mentioned (burr swap, low retention, single dosing, multiple grind adjustments) made this a no brainer for me. Since I already own multiple SSP burrs for my Mazzer Mini, I didn’t have to worry about spending extra for burrs. I think my Lab Sweets are gonna be a perfect match for this grinder.

    It's a great time for coffee lovers as there are now many budget-friendly flat burr grinders available, such as the DF64/83 and this. This was unimaginable just a few years ago. I have been using the Lagom P64 with SSP for the past few months, and while it's a great end-game quality grinder, it's not perfect. However, if quality budget flat burr grinders become more available, they will likely lose more and more consumers to their competitors. If the 78 model offered SSP burr options, I definitely would not have purchased the Lagom P64 if I could go back in time.

    Grinders of this caliber at this price point is extremely exciting! I think if I upgrade from my niche I would go the non traditional route and get a more traditional (pun intended) grinder. I’ve got my eye on the LUCCA atom 75 simply for the micrometer readout + big burrs
    I’m having a great time with the niche but single dosing all the time has me yearning for a 3 second OD grinder more and more. Grass is always greener!

    @JakubTarnawski ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for the video! Two questions. One, how is the grinding speed? And two, for the workflow - I assume this dosing cup requires a lot of WDT to prevent donut channeling? Would it be practical to instead grind directly into the portafilter?

    I'm surprised no one has mentioned or complained that the RPM control is on the BACK of the grinder!
    Isn't that awkward? On my crowded coffee bench, I'm never going to be able to view what setting it is at! I also used the Weber Key blindly like that (which has RPM control on the side, but hard to see due to limited space beside the grinder for me) just going by sound and position of the switch and estimating, like ok Half power is about xx RPM and 1/4 turn power is xy RPM.

    I am in a weird place. I am debating between this 064S and a Eureka Mignon Zero. The Eureka is a bit more expensive (about 60 EUR), but I can get it tomorrow (and with local warranty) . This on the other hand is a Kickstarter with way to many orders IMO, to expect it will ship on time. Also, everyone is comparing it with other 64mm grinders and pointing out its a good bargain, but what about smaller grinders (like the Eureka) . After all, if the difference is only grind speed then the the choice wouldn't be so obvious.

    I backed the big brother the 78s as it sounds like it’s notch up in both build and cup results. Important if you like me is very light roast drinkers and intend to run these at “low” RPM. I’m definitely looking forward to it. I suspect we see their v2 ending the same place as Ode v2 with a larger hopper to accommodate a more pronounced slope into the prebreaker.

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants ปีที่แล้ว

      Sprometheus says he ran this at low RPM for a light roast and had no stalling issues! Maybe Kyle's using some super light roasts or his had some issues with it, which isn't a good sign either way (quality control wise). I figured they limited the 'low' RPM to a relatively high (but OK) 800RPM to avoid stalling issues, I think it's weird the much more powerful 078 models are also limited to 800RPM I'm sure they COULD go to 600 without any issues at least.

    • @Zirassi
      @Zirassi ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BensCoffeeRants Different beans have different densities- even at identical roast levels, one bean can be much harder to grind than another. Thankfully, there's an easy workaround to prevent stalls- just slowly feed in the beans while the grinder is running. I grind light roast washed ethiopian (Heart most recently) espresso-fine on my Ode Gen 2, which has even less power, every time I make coffee. 0 Stalls ever. Granted it's pushing 1400 rpm all the time, but still. Timemore should have probably gone with a slower-feeding auger to mitigate this issue IMO. I Just went 078S personally.

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants ปีที่แล้ว

    From the reviews of this machine.. it's the first one that's made me question my niche.
    the static is lame, but the niche has that too. the popcorn will hopefully be solved either before final production or aftermarket. and although the niche dosing cup is something that feels so nice to use, it's not the most important piece of UX
    It does look like a fancy sewing machine though

    My issue with this grinder is a) that plastic used for the hopper looks a tad cheap and flimsy, compared to the rest of the device (this is coming from a Niche owner that famously has a yogurt lid) b) the motor on the 64mm version is reaaally struggling. Other reviewers pointed that out and it something to be worried about. Lastly longevity, but it's too early to say.

    Question, would you get the 64S if you’re only doing filter coffee to have the stepless adjustment and more RPM range or would you recommend staying with the standard 64?
    Thank you so much

    • @Sprometheus
      @Sprometheus  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good question, and hard for me to answer without having tried the 064 and it’s Turbo burrs. But personally, I find the 064s to be incredibly capable, and essentially the 1-4 range on the dial is espresso, and you have another 12 or so notches to dial in filter. Plus, you can always swap in a different set of burrs. So I’d go for the 064s over the 064.

    If the production units wind up matching these review units in terms of QC, then this is a no brainer. And I sincerely hope for all the backers that they do!! That said, I'm personally a bit skeptical of this marketing tactic of sending out pre-production prototypes to reviewers. It's a LOT easier to ensure quality across a few dozen "press-ready" prototype units than it is to do the same for thousands across a production batch. Maybe they'll knock it out of the park and the price of my skepticism will be the early bird discount I'm not jumping on but only time will tell.

    In Kyle Roswell's review, he found that the failsafe tended to trigger with light roast, low RPM, minimum grind size - any chance you tested at those settings and had a different experience?

    • @Sprometheus
      @Sprometheus  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      If it stalled on me I’d mention it. I had no issues like that, but literally grinding on the finest setting, and lowest RPM with the lightest roast possible sounds like trying to trigger it. Through normal use, and for me a 17g espresso was ground around .5 of a turn, I had no issues.
