Exploring The Desert Lode Star Mine: A California Silver Mine (part 3 of 3)

  • In this video we visit the Desert Lode Star Mine and descend ladders in the manway to the 360' level. The large silver deposit was discovered here in 1882 and by 1885 the main shaft reached 800' below the surface, quite a feat in those days. The mine produced $1.8 million in silver by 1887. In parts 1 and 2 we explored the upper levels of this mine. For this explore we go down farther to the lowest level in the mine that is still open. There are several large stopes and ore passes here, as well as many large wooden ore chutes. We see the huge main shaft that was originally 800' deep but is now plugged beyond the 360' level.

    That was interesting seeing all of that debris that has piled up at the bottom of that extremely deep vertical shaft. I’m surprised at the number of tires, but I guess that would be a good place to discard stuff like that. But where did those tires all come from? Regarding those switching plates, I’m still not sure how the ones worked where the ore cart makes a 90° turn. I guess the miners would simply push the cart in whichever direction they wanted to turn, as you mentioned. I would imagine, though, that a full ore cart would be extremely heavy. And it seems like there is nothing to guide the wheels on those switching plates. Nice seeing Chillis breaking in his new helmet! It’s unavoidable, unfortunately. We’re always hitting our heads. The condition of all those ladders in that mine is incredible. They just seem extremely well preserved and look brand new. Ladders in other mines that we have seen might be sturdy and safe but they never seem to look as pristine as the ones in this mine do. Nice video, Tom & Julie!

      I think that there are a lot more tires in there that what you see. Somebody probably illegally unloaded a boat load of tires in there after charging customers for their disposal.
      I think that you described how those switch plates worked. They would simply muscle the ore car 90° and carry on. Chillis bonked his head a couple times and got a couple helmet dings. He's paying his dues. Thanks for the comment, Frank. We missed you on this one.

    Hi Tom & Julie, wow that was some mine and it had some very cool artefacts left behind too which is always a bonus. I love the photograph you took of Julie at the top of the last ladder to exit the mine, that is one photograph that should be framed. Thank you for sharing, much love to you both. xx💖

      Hi Sue! It is getting harder and harder to find any artifacts, so it is a bonus to find anything left behind. Thanks for the compliment about that last pic of me, very kind of you. I always get a chuckle out of that last pic of Chillis at the end. He looked so happy to be above ground! Lol

    Before land management closed it off I was able to go down that mine. It was intense going straight down those ladders. A experience that I’ll only be able to enjoy in my youth. My nerves won’t allow me to do that again unless I was medicated. lol

      Hi Darren. This is a fun mine with a cool ladder system. It wasn't closed when we were there a few years ago. We used a fake name for the mine in video so as not to encourage more gating. It can be a little nerve-wracking going down a vertical ladder that's 100 years old. Thanks for the comment!👍😄

      We appreciate you watching, Jeffrey. We occasionally run across rocks with visible gold in them. We probably see other valuable ore containing silver, copper or lead. I don't really go looking for it though. Too heavy to haul and too much work processing it. Julie thanks you for the compliment.

    When climbing ladders (or old stairs) it's best to not step in the center of the rung, but keep your feet toward the outer edges. And, of course, not to put both feet on a single rung.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's good advice. The ladders here are in very good shape. I don't think you could break a rung if you tried. Thanks for the comment, Duck!

    Somebody spent a lot of time and effort rebuilding that lower ladder but there's not much on the 360 level, except those lovely tires and junk. Why do people have to pollute everywhere with their old tires and refrigerators and crap? Makes me mad every time I stumble upon such things! I did, however, find a perfectly good ceiling light fixture one time (complete with intact glass), cleaned it up and installed it in my office...still not happy someone thew it into the woods! Your friend was wearing a 3M P100 mask. Was that a Covid-19 precaution or for toxic dust in the mine?

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This one is a little messy. I don't know why people do some things. Shooting an old abandoned truck is another move I don't get. Anyway, I think Chillis was possibly wearing that madk for both of those reasons you mentioned. Thanks for watching!
