A lot of Steely Dan heads don’t like this song, but I think it’s PHENOMENAL!
It’s still SO fresh and modern sounding…..almost as if it’s from 2030, not 1980.
It’s World Lounge music BEFORE there was ever World Lounge!
    SO HIP!!
    👍🏼🎸🎹🎼❤️😎

The lyrics are a gradual reveal as to the "glamour profession". The first stanza portrays him as a mere chauffeur; in the second and third stanzas, he becomes a bodyguard. Then finally, after the "fabled fools" break, he is revealed as a supplier too ("now that the deal is done"). A wicked, subtle fable of the one who oversees personal dissolution.

These guys simply did eveything the right way. Who else made music like this either then or now? They have a unique ability to merge music from the past with present day mixing and engineering. The sound production and editing is top shelf, period.

Check out their song Green Earrings. Great song. I met the drummer Bernard Purdie in October and he is so cool, so friendly, and so humble! To be so talented, so gracious, and kind just speaks to the reason he is still so effervescent at 83 years of age!

From the 1980's album "Gaucho". Beautifully, Steely Dan, layered with
    metaphors musically and lyrically, and
instruments that are fighting for top
billing. Definitely full of drug references
Harri you got it. 👍👍 Becker and Fagan
broke up shortly after this album due to
    Becker's addiction. Great reaction Harri.

Steve Khan’s solo at the end is guitar Nirvana. I know what you mean about 40s harmony with an 80s groove. There was another band that did this, except they were from the 70s: Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band. They had a real big hit called Cherchez La Femme. You would love it. Actually, the whole album is great and definitely worth a listen.

Thanks Harri, you nailed it. Steely Dan is a mood you can't quit with their snarky lyrics, perfect catchy chords and production. This one about a cocaine dealer to (I am assuming) a pro basketball team, probably the lakers or clippers, among others, as this album was recorded in L.A..
