Outkast's heavily underrated. Most people only know them from their radio hits, which are not bad, but their albums are absolute hip hop classics.
I didn't know that people underrated them.
In the hip hop community they're anything but underrated. Andre comes up in top 10s all the time.
Ok not underrated then :) still I feel that at the time they didn't get the same recognition as say Dre, Snoop, Em etc... Might have changed by now
Ben V maybe it depends on where you live? I'm in California and the artists you mentioned got lots of play. Also E-40, Too Short, etc. I think artists from other places (like outkasts) took longer to catch on because we were to busy listening to L.A. and Bay Area hip hop. If I was living in the south, I think it would have been different.
they ARE underrated, only radio songs are popping. Don't let them trip you. To me, and few, they are heavy tho heavily underrated
The song is about a failed relationship. The incredible thing is he plays all of the instruments from the video in real life. He even learn how to play the guitar left handed for a Jimi Hendrix movie from a few years ago
Crazy thing I've noticed, is that people are so distracted by how upbeat and fun the song sounds they miss the fact that the lyrics are a little dark, describing what's essentially a couple realizing they're terrible together, knowing they need to split up, but being unable to bring themselves to do so.
Andre 3000 even slipped in "Y'all don't want to hear me, you just wanna dance" at one point, but it's at the beginning of a chorus so most people don't notice
Actually I think everyone knows this by now, as there are video analyses about that en masse
well, most people listen to songs, not the lyrics
You should check out more of Outkast, try Roses or Ms Jackson both are honestly great songs

You probably heard this somewhere yes, it was really huge, it reached #1 on the Billboard charts, went platinum and won a grammy. The album this is from is one of the best selling albums of all time (double-album so it counted double, with over 11 million copies sold)

This song is fantastic not just for its fun tone and catchy chorus, but also because if you actually sit there and listen to the lyrics it's a bit of a sad tale about two people whose relationship is falling apart. Listen to the cover of this song done by Obadiah Parker and you'll see it - those same lyrics put to a more somber tone makes it all the more evident. Andre always takes it exactly where you don't expect it.

Put it this way. Andre 3k is one of eminems top favorite rappers of all time. The goat doesn't listen to bad rappers

It might be surprising to you that Andre 3000 (the lead in this track) is actually considered by the majority hip hop heads as a top 10, if not THE greatest rapper of all time. You should definitely check out their earlier work, especially considering your interest in funk music. OutKast are the funkiest of all hip hop artists.

Hey Ya is several layers of brilliant - on the surface, it's a fast, snappy upbeat song. The song got a great deal of airplay on modern rock stations at the time. The video references the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show, but it also can reference "That Thing You Do" where the main characters similarly rise to stardom by playing a slow love song with a fast upbeat pace. Indeed, there are a ton of covers of "Hey Ya" that slow the song down and it really comes across as melancholic lyrics.
He was also in 4 brothers movie, which is based in Detroit.

i was about to lose my head if you'd made it until the end of 2018 never hearing this (amazing) song. there was a time (in 2004-05) that you couldn't go somewhere & not hear this tune.
it's held up to the test of time, imo. most outkast does. andre has also played a very good jimi hendrix, among other roles. & this song actually taught me NOT to shake developing polaroid pictures, haha.

Andre 3k was right. Ppl don’t wanna hear the truth. They just wanna dance. This guys called it a “Fun song” had he listed to the lyrics, he would know this is one of many deep songs on the album that talks about the true struggles of our generation today. Andre says his girl don’t mess around because she loves him and he knows she loves him.
And then Says “But does she really wanna”. “But can’t stand to see me walk out that door”
As this generation and ones to follow have experienced divorce in the family. Leaving many girls and guys with abandonment issues.
