    This reminds me of the time I blew up one of those pill bottle sized capacitors from a VCR when I was a kid. I was in the 3rd or 4th grade at the time. I put it on a small PCB with nothing else, with a wall cord (120v) and plugged it into a switched outlet. I knew what was going to happen, but I did it anyway. I didn't have the nerve to do it while mom was in the next room, so I waited until the next morning, when she was in the hallway waiting to take me to school. I flipped the switch (on the other side of the room), watched the cap blow with a loud pop and flash of smoke, hit the ceiling and fall right in the metal trash can with a loud ping. I giggled for a minute, shut off the switch, and went to school. I never told anyone about that until today, 37 years later.

    I used to deliberately fry things when I was young, starting off with connecting old components across the 16V AC output from my brother's H&M train controller. I got bored with the results from that after a while, so then decided to fry things on 240V instead. I can still hear my dear old Mum shouting up to me..."Colin, what are you doing now"? I would say "nothing", and Mum would say "It doesn't smell like nothing to me!.. whatever you're doing, stop it". The resulting stink from some components was quite atrocious, and probably quite dangerous, but I lived to tell the tale. Then I almost set the house on fire one day by putting too much meths in my Mamod model steam engine burner and lighting it in my bedroom. I nearly shat myself with that one. Great stuff Clive. It takes me back to those dangerous old days of my own childhood experiments :)

    • @bigclivedotcom

      +Huskiefluff Are you using lead free solder? It has a higher melting point. It may be best to ignore your irons temperature indication and nudge it up until it feels right. Is the tip of the iron clean and shiny? It has to be clean for the best thermal connection with the solder.

I tested it on a 555 timer driver for a demonstration of a project. When I switched that piece of shit on, oh god, I got the worst static discharge ever. OUCH!!! Everyone was rolling on their asses laughing at me. The room was full of smoke and we ad too use a fire extinguisher. Turns out some slob cracked the pcb and the flyback for the display was not grounded because the ground rail was cracked. SO moral is never fucking ever buy a 50 dollar used crt oscilloscope.

      Sample Text do you know at what frequency it makes a buzzing sound? If it is 50 or 60 hertz than it is probably just a crappy transformer being overloaded. I am pretty sure that thing uses a 1cm transformer and believe me, those are crap. I it is not at those frequencies, then It could be anything. You would have to take it apart. But in either case check the transformer.

    In my experience, the smaller capacitors without the stress relief crimping on the top go bang the best. They also make a much, much bigger bang if you subject them to over-voltage until the dielectric catastrophically breaks down instead of simply reversing the polarity.
    Finally, and this is a suggestion for something you would *not* do, the larger capacitors with the pre-stressed tops can *sometimes* be reinforced by just soldering them.
    The last thing I would recommend really not doing is looking for old grab-bags of electrolytic capacitors before the pre-stressing was really a thing. You can find some completely sealed co-axially leaded capacitors in quite high values. You do need a lot of power to pop them though. I think I had a 0-50V, 0-30A DC supply.

      theLuigiFan0007 not that I'm suggesting this, but you can explode some pretty large ones, like a 12V, 2200uF one. It sounds like a gunshot, but the explosion isn't particularly dangerous. It usually just ends up with unraveled electrode foil and a paper electrolyte. Fair warning though, the smell is much, much worse than burned FR4.
      I wonder if a supercapacitor could be made to explode. They're an entirely different internal construction.

    • @theLuigiFan0007Productions
      @theLuigiFan0007Productions 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      htomerif
      As for supercaps, it depends on the kind really. If it's a small one (Under 10F) it might explode, as it's basically two capacitors in one. A really large one, lets's say, 3400F, would likely just melt and emit a load of sparks, because those use a carbon power if i'm not mistaken.
      With 8 of those massive ones in series, I wouldn't be surprised if it could weld at 12V. They have a capacity that gives large batteries a run for their money. They're like 3.4 billion uF or something.

    Old video, but a recent shock from a PSU that looks almost identical to this one - newer models swapped the screw for thin plastic latches and as I was cradling the PSU in my palm and started pulling, the case spit apart and the tips of my fingers touched the PCB. Living in an unprotected 240V country, I was lucky I switched off the extension cord prior to pulling it, so I only got a slight shock from the capacitor. ... Lesson learned - don't assume screw-less PSUs are ultrasonically welded.

      I have been trying to become more adept at the Clive method of soldering, sadly my 67 year old hands have a bit of shake, the result of doing a bit to much one handed exercise in my youth, before I found a good woman who would help me with such matters, and perhaps caused by the hundreds of thousands of rounds I have put through the handguns that I have owned over my 24 years of law enforcement, and 8 years as a Soldier in the United States Army. Still, I think I am making progress, it is a rare day indeed when I burn my fingers when attempting to tin a lead, or hold the circuit board and solder in one hand while applying the heat with the soldering iron in the other. I would never have attempted this had I not watched hours and hours of Big Clive doing it himself. I do believe I have watched nearly all his recent videos, now I am enjoying the videos of old on his web page.

    I prefer to add paste flux (Ebay's cheapest in square plastic tubs works fine for me) to every desolder braid I use, unless it's a very high value repair, in which case I use some liquid flux applied immediately before.
    Unless the braid is badly corroded (any dark orange/red or even verdigris colors are a very bad sign) I've never had a single problem even with braids that are over 10 years old as long as they have been kept dry and aren't visibly corroded.
    Unless you are prepared to add extra flux immediately before use then I think all desolder braids should be stored in extra airtight packing - small ziplock bags are perfect on a cost/benefit basis - on top of any existing packaging they arrive in.
    I started off using coax braid offcuts donkey's years ago so I learned the hard way that it's all about the flux and general cleanliness. Avoid the tendency to use a strong flux to compensate for corrosion or dirt though.
    For this reason I prepare 1m lengths of braid for very high-value jobs in advance with a wipe on both sides using paste flux then bag them up and date them. The (mild) flux paste prevents any further oxidation by keeping the air off it.

    • @wtrdawnlord
      @wtrdawnlord 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Thomas It's Clive for Christ's sake! Of course he's used a solder sucker. He's only been doing this shite for 40ish years. He likes the wick better. Why the hell do idiots think that because some very clearly experienced and willing to experiment person doesn't do something the way YOU do it they must have not tried it, or maybe doesn't even know about it. Clive even states in another video (possibly in response to your dumb ass but I'm certain there are others) that he has done so (of course) and prefers the wick. God I wish people with brains would actually put them in a working gear before speaking, leaving the house....

    • @christhomas7905
      @christhomas7905 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      William Thomas Ramey wow you clearly have some serious issues. I made a comment to someone I respect, hence why I follow his videos in here. But you decide you are a superior being and wanna make a spiteful comment you nasty excuse for a human! we all have different methods if working with electronics. what makes you think I have no idea what I'm doing? keep your pathetic childish comments to yourself little man

    • @wtrdawnlord
      @wtrdawnlord 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Thomas Sir, you are absolutely right. I *do* have serious issues...with jackasses who throw out thoughtless comments that obviously assume ignorance on the part of highly experienced and widely knowledgeable individuals. Now certainly Clive doesn't need me to stand up for him. I just took it upon myself to try to put a clue into your head that your comment, which I assume you thought was helpful, was actually just insulting and you would realise was unnecessary at best... except for the fact you definitely made the assumption Clive (of all people) doesn't have the same experience (de)soldering in about every way possible and *additionally* assumed you might know more about the subject than him. Now if you had made such a comment to some novice it would be perfectly reasonable. Made towards someone of Clive's calibre it's just bloody arrogant, rude and pointless. I bet you aren't going to accept my premise at all, and that will just show you to be more of an arrogant jackass who thinks he is intellectually superior to about everyone...while denying you are anything of the sort.
      BTW, I never said, or implied, that you are at all unskilled in electrical or electronics. I expect you are quite competent. I challenge your intellectual arrogance and lack of self-insight, and that makes you foolish. Feel free to throw out more baseless, pejorative personal insults at me all you like. If you made one that had any basis in reality and honestly reflected one of my flaws about which I am sensitive you might be able to rile me up...as I did you. As it is your insults are impotent and silly. Maybe if you were more self-aware you would also be able to make proper inferences about me. Alas...LOL!

    • @christhomas7905
      @christhomas7905 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Considering my comment was made 'tongue in cheek' because I personally find soldering wick to be a frustrating headache to use, you have taken this all too seriously. Spouting big words and writing a long paragraph shooting me down in a vein attempt to make yourself seem intellectual, just shows how petty you are. Clive may have not even used a solder pump before, it doesn't matter how old he is or how much experience he has. I had worked with electronics for several years without trying the wick method until someone suggested it to me and I didn't get on with it. I pitched the solder pump method to Clive on the off chance he had only ever used one method to de-solder components. But what is hilarious is that although my comment was light-hearted and not serious, you took it upon yourself to think you are someone bigger and more intelligent than me by spouting big words and phrases, writing long paragraphs to validate yourself while trying to put me down. GROW UP LITTLE MAN! I shall remove myself from this conversation because I have more important things in my life to concern myself with than a silly debate with some random on Facebook!

      +Tom Risely Fine solder wick does not conduct heat too well and this makes it that much easier to work with on small jobs. As long as you are reasonably quick about it, it won't have time to heat up all that much. Tinning wires is much the same: if the wires are prepared properly with the correct tip temperature and flux for the solder being used, tinning will be done long before the wire insulation becomes too hot to hold.
