  • Testing RF Signal Detection On X13 affordable bug detector device, sold on the internet. We use a baofeng, wireless remote, and HackRF + Portapack to test the sensitivity on the X13. This one claims to find hidden GPS, cameras, and other electronic spy devices. Today is the unboxing video with minimal tests. Later, we may set up some additional real-world examples to test out.
The baofeng UV-5R is a very powerful radio, and isn't quite the right power level - so we break out the HackRF + Portapack, to more closely mirror a lower powered transmitting 'bug'.
While I bought the X13 (thanks for supporting this) to test on video for everyone, in a real situation, if an employee or criminal installed hidden cameras / microphones in your business, the X13 could work for you. But how close might you have to be? Watch the video to find out.

I would like to see more specifically how it detects hidden cameras and how the red window that extends works to show an infra red signal if that is its function.

I would enjoy talking more on this in future - once I have more free time aside (no estimated time). Because I believe it could make for interesting video. :)

It's also a $20 device so it's super accessible.. Planning some more tests - was thinking maybe of setting up a pi zero camera with wifi data feed, placing it under a layer at random to see how it detects.

Another banger… what do you think about the Solar Storms we are supposed to get ?

      Appreciated JohnDoe!
I think it may cause issues listening to radio, especially shortwave. Also could disrupt some things.
I'm rather curious myself going to do some more reading on this.

Solar strom cycle peak has a huge effect on economic activity, known to be parallel to stock market dips... A full cycle is around 11 years..

      Uh oh! Someone is bugged!
      Kidding.
It could be alarm sensor related (if you have one), electronic lock (many wireless), or another IoT "smart" related device nearby. Or another false positive. If there is nothing nearby, might want to play with sensitivities.

Yep. It's definitely not ideal range here.
I will probably do more testing with something more realistic, like a singleboard computer + camera.
Hackrf transmits using less power, so a more realistic sbc + wifi surveillance device, should have better range on higher sensitivty setting... hopefully.
