taken from This Progress film showing body assembly of an Austin seven saloon, also painting. the sound quality isn't great but this film is 80 years old.
As a boy, I learned to drive on an Austin 10 from the year 1933. It was my father's car. Only the handbrake worked and the lights went out when you went over a bump. For all its failings I have happy memories of it.
I love these old movies. I'm old enough to remember when there was plenty of these old cars still around, cheap as chips. A tenner for one with decent tyres and a bit of tax and MOT on it. My first car was a Ford Prefect, I dunno, maybe a 48 model. 3 quid I paid. Didn't keep it long and my next car I went bonkers. 17 pounds 10 shillings for a 49 Morris Series E. Magic little bus. Wish I had the bugger now.....
Brilliant early production lines. Austin 1 car every 3mins impressive. What do we have now robotic arms. Mind what British car industry now all foreign owned. Interesting 👍👍
Pretty sure the body filler made from pure lead was a bit more of an issue. They weren't using catalyzed paint yet, so not good for you but it would liquefy your nervous system like isocyanate hardeners will
And now if you drive past what was the Longbridge Plant all you see is travel agents, mail bars, tanning salons, tattoo parlours and coffee shops. Very depressing
Warranty claims for lungs you mean! Shocking that workers were exposed and breathing to all that spray mist...even then they should have known better..
Back when people worked and Britain was Great! 🇬🇧🇬🇧

I read somewhere that Herbert Austin copied Ford's system
Wonder how long that worker lived without using a mask while spraying

Quality Cars Made to LAST.
Yes absolutely, still plenty on the road today, they have a huge following
And now if you drive past what was the Longbridge Plant all you see is travel agents, mail bars, tanning salons, tattoo parlours and coffee shops. Very depressing
The guy paint-spraying ........ no mask or fuck-all🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ah yes but he was keeping his tin of tobacco out of harm's way, priority,s my friend
Sound effects by Sid in his kitchen.
Paint is very good for the lungs it’s been proven .
Yes, it stiffens the airways for strong lungs in later life.
Assuming they didn’t know or if they did. Didn’t care about how bad cellulose paint was. How dis they stand the smell and fumes all day?
I used to pass a factory that used cellulose paint you could smell it half a mile away,
Good video 👽
Why did they dub on the factory sounds later ? Suitable microphones were available then to record on Acetate Discs in real-time when filming.
Perhaps because of the conditions, recording equipment was bulky in those days,
The "good old days" when humans made everything and everyone had a job.
I think somewhere along the line someone added some machinery sound effects. It sounds pretty fake in places .
yes it would have been a silent movie
yea I was in the desert looking for gerbles
did u find any ?
That's not a seven, it's a twelve.
I think most of the Austin range was featured in one form or another though the film was aimed at the seven in particular
This is the same as the Tesla factory only the robots are made to resemble humans. Quaint.
Spraying paint, cellulose, not a mask to be seen! Even cellulose paint is banned now! Wonder what the warranty claim rate ran at??

Early foely sounds effects done very badly.
Sounds like someone's banging on a workbench covered with spanners
The tape speeds are all wrong with the sound.
