6.9IDI cold start with bad glow plugs

Had a few GPs burn out from a bad controller so I put them on a push button. Timing advance/cold idle is on a switch too. Been mid 50s here at night and rainy 60s during the day. Even after a fresh rebuild and perfect timing, sometimes they just don't like to start cold!

My 'dad's '83 F-350 sounded exactly like that. But whenever he cranked it too long and a neighbor was playing some Celtic music and I just happened to be practicing my Uilleann bag pipes. The touring company of "Riverdance" would show up & start line dancing in our driveway!!! 😄

Have you ever tried playing with the throttle while cranking? Some idi’s seem to like it. You should try it and show us what you’re doing and how it reacts.

Gearhead I replaced all 8 glow plugs and the starter. Usually I just give the throttle a tap to set the high idle/timing advance, which I have on the switch to the right.
