      yeah.. this 'NL tries' just seems like a much lazier and lower-effort version of the proper 'let's look at's'
      not a fan, do a proper lets look at, in the the process give the games a fair shot inasmuch that you take time to understand and become invested in them (if only for a short while). playing while on stream doesn't do any of those things, and IMO does both the games and viewers a disservice.

    I finished Moonlighter a week or so ago, and I have to say that it really isn't worth playing... At least, if you do play it, just do a couple dungeon runs and open shop a couple times, then refund the game, because it almost literally doesn't change whatsoever. Basically, what you see in this video is all the game ever is... Maybe it changes slightly, and I mean very slightly...
    -The 4 dungeons (which are purely just a change in skin and enemy variants, well the desert dungeon has a little monolith in some rooms that you have to press A on, but really, what does that actually matter?) consist of just a few room types: An empty room, a room with enemies that may have a chest, a fountain that can heal you, a room with a tent and book, and a secret room. -These all always show up (I'm unsure about the secret rooms, but I know that at least one shows up per dungeon run), btw the room with the tent and book is utterly useless, yet still has a jingle when you find it, as though it matters. -The fountain just restores your health (obviously), but it's guarantied to show up, so it's not special either. -So you're left with pretty much just rooms with enemies, and secret rooms (which also only have a few different variation to them, so it's not special to find a secret, not really)... That's not really what I'd call variety, it doesn't even change the further in you go. -Also, there's only 3 floors per run, and about a dozen rooms (if that) per floor, so I even hesitate to call them "dungeons".
    -I haven't even mentioned anything else, which is pretty much the same, extremely shallow. -The weapons hardly change from the few upgrades that they get, you don't get more than the basic attack and a lame special attack... -The potions consist of just healing potions, and those to show you through the dungeon, that's it. -Upgrading the town is simply to pay 5 merchants to show up, 3 of which you get immediately. -The shop upgrading involves increasing the size as well as buying a 'sale bin', 'better cash register', 'bed', and 'chest'... Though those four upgrades are also very linear and offer a marginal difference, like getting a little more money from sales. -What's worse is that nothing you pay for affects the town, merchants show up sure, but that's about it, it doesn't feel like your reviving the town or making it better... The inside of the shop changes a little, but it still feels very incomplete.
    -The only good things about this game, is the music which is incredible, and the art style/animation which is pretty good, though in some places not so much. -It looks and sounds good at least, which is almost sad, because it feels like they're selling you on the art/music, not the gameplay, which says a lot.
    -In the end, if they had a demo of this game, I think that it would ruin it, because there's not much to show. -The dungeon runs, and opening shop doesn't change whatsoever after the tutorial, you don't get new mechanics, nothing. -I hate to call the devs "lazy", because I don't really think that that's really true, but it really does feel like an early access game that, at first sight, looks complete until you actually get into it. -I spent about 16 hours playing this game, I regret it, especially because you get nothing, there's no incentive to keep playing, you can't even re-fight bosses, so what little challenge that there was fades away
    -Stay away from the game, or at least play for less than 2 hours so that you can refund it, and trust me, nothing changes...
    Maybe something will change in an update, but what's present very clearly isn't enough.

      @legion999 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I think treating this like a roguelike is a bit of a mistake. This isnt like a roguelike with near-infinite replayability or variety. This is much more like Recettear, a lot of the "fun" is here for people with the greedy hoarder ocd mindset and the shop stuff.

    • @smonkh1450
      @smonkh1450 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      legion999 my problem is that there’s so little items that if you’re smart about it you could figure out the prices in two days.
      But +15 points for the Star Wars prequel reference after you unlock the desert dungeon when you speak to the npcs in the town.

    • @legion999
      @legion999 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Smonkh
      But there's like two hundred items tho. Not that you need to figure out all of them, just the high-end ones.

    • @lethauntic
      @lethauntic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      legion999
      I understand, though I didn't really go into it thinking that it would be a rougelike, but especially after playing it, it does have the blood of one at least, so calling it a "rougelike" honestly isn't too far off. I was more just interested in the dungeon hunting and opening shop combination, but the problem is that half the game is delving into dungeons, and if that's shallow, then it greatly affects the rest of it. Plus not having anything interesting to spend money on is also a big part of it.
      I wish that there was at least a little more customization, you can get some decor to place in the shop, but there's not a lot of that.
      -One thing that I forgot to mention in my original post that sort of relates to this, is that one of the reasons that I finally got it was because on a podcast (I'm pretty sure that it was the Roundtable), someone mentioned that what you sell and in what quantity you sell it in affects it's value . So if you didn't sell weapons that they'd stop trying to buy weapons altogether (because they'd make their own, I think that they said?), or if you just sold one item over and over, then over-saturation in the market would kick in and the value would suffer, but this wasn't the case. I won't blame the game for this misunderstanding, because someone was somewhat praising the game for something that I find out doesn't exist really. Though I could have just misheard greatly, but I doubt that.
      I really just should have looked more thoroughly at reviews before buying in hindsight.

    • @lethauntic
      @lethauntic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another thing that I forgot to bring up, was that townspeople have no personality.
      As far as shops go, I do love that the music alters as you approach a vender, but other than that the only thing that you get from the merchants is the opening message when buying. That's about it though, as everyone else walking around don't have anything to them, they all (or mostly) use recycled lines, so one person will say the same thing that another does, which doesn't help me imagine the place as a living, breathing town or whatever it is. They don't need the depth and mechanics that Stardew Valley has, because that's a different type of game, but maybe just a little of that would help.
      I could accept a lot of this if it wasn't for the price, $20 USD isn't exactly worth what you get I think, and I say that just because there are many games of the same price, if not cheaper that offer more. I say that, but it is nice to get something similar to Recettear, even though that wasn't my main motivation for getting it in the first place, I liked learning what prices are good to sell for on each of the items, but after you find that out you can just dump them and wait for the items to get snatched up and bought.

      Demand partially determines the price of a good

  • @PongzeLor
    @PongzeLor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Moonlighter is such an amazing game on paper... but did they let anybody playtest the game? The battle system feels terrible and the intricacy of managing supply and demand is completely gone when you can sell first floor items for 500-3000 gold while other items sell for around 10 gold, but you can’t even hoard it due to the storage constraints. A whole lot of potential just went down the drain.
    I would rate it as a top notch flash game but nowhere worth 20$. Buy it on sale if you’re interested.

    • @4Pssf2w
      @4Pssf2w 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Top rate flash game! HA! Perfect analogy. If I found this on Newgrounds I'd be impressed and pay attention to the developer to see what they have coming in the future, but paying $20 for it? A bit insulting considering the other games I could buy for the same price.

    I like this game quite abit, had good fun building up my shop and the city around it, the dungeons get more challinging and the weapon variants are fun to try out, but ill get why nl isnt a big fan most rogue lite games have tons of gamechanging items wich make every run different, the melee focused rather slow combat can be a bit one dimentional.But i still enjoyed it quite a bit only thing i didnt like is that u cant fight bosses again after killing them.

    Tbh I really enjoy this game. Not really getting all the bad combat and managing complaints having no issues with any of those things. The game has a cool combination of Zelda/ stardewvally going on. Secondly the game is an adventure game with rogue like elements. Not a rogue like. So ur ment to just play through it and be done. Also it seems like I'm the only one to have discovered that you can do switch combos by timing ur weapon switch after ur first attack. So something like A,LB,LB the timing is based on the weapons used.

    NL, Recettear *is* very Anime but it's one of my favourite games of all time. It's age holds up well in my opinion as I first played it 7 years after it's release (It was ported to Steam in 2010 but it came out in JP in 2007) and had a blast. You spend most of your time selling things in the shop and haggling with each customer, each type of customer having their own best selling point. Ex. Children don't have much to money so their purchase point is lower than average, Old men and housewives will be curmudgeons and try and squeeze a better deal out of you (even if they're willing to pay the first price you set). Eventually customers will place orders for amounts of specific items at a later date that you can fill and Customers will sell items back at you.
    There is a dungeon mechanic with various different adventurers you can use but if you didn't want to do them you could get away with buying and re-selling items the whole game and never dungeoning (albeit the financial rewards for dungeoning are very good).
    You can craft to make even more valuable things to sell, there's world events that influence whether things are selling above or below market price (Ex. "News flash: Looming war in the north has increased the demand for Steel Swords"). Usually you can pick it up on sale for $5, at that price you can try it and even if it's not your cup of tea you can get a video or two (or stream whatever) for not much lost. There's also a demo on steam if you want to do that (though I haven't played the demo myself so I don't know how deep it is).

    i've never even HEARD of this game! seems to be pretty original. i dont recall another capitalist roguelike. it looks like Bastion with the gameplay of classic Zelda. it reminds me of Illusion of Gaia, but i think thats only because the guy's name is Will. game looks great. might pick it up.
    additionally, Fuel's first album is really good. notable singles: Sunburn, Jesus or a Gun, Shimmer. classic 90s pure, unadulterated butt-rock!
