i only worked off of pictures of the levels. i was always too bad to get past world 2 in the original mario bros as a kid.

In my opinion, the physics were kinda ruined, Mario 64's physics don't work with this engine, but I really appreciate the effort put into this game, you can tell they really tried with this game. But great video! And I like how they removed the warps! Also the reason you can't move back in the original, is because they hadn't had the technology yet. The fish levels are hell. One more thing, I think Lakitus weren't added because programming difficulties.
The strange thing is that some levels like 4-1 did have the Lakitu's and others didn't. I feel like it was an intentional change to make the game more fun.

I highly disagree on the part where you said timers don't need to exist. A timer, especially an actually tight one, adds a sense of urgency to the player. It's also THE core concept behind speedrun levels in SMM or mario rom hacks, which are my favorite levels when done correctly.

Not only you get a game over and start all over and over to the first world again, you can press A+Start (not mentioning the Lost Bits host) to continue to the world you get a game over on.

3:08 I’m not sure if you or many other people know this, but there’s actually a way to continue from the world you got a game over in. You have to press A and start while starting the game. Why Nintendo didn’t make an actual continue screen is beyond me.
