you're probably the only guy that gets to the bottom of things for animators who are seeking help of combining 2D and 3D. You see it a lot in anime (mainly Makato Shinkai's work) so your tutorials really help!
The glint off the rock in the middle is a wonderful touch. This scene reminds me of the cartoon 'Bambi' before the mother is killed--warm and peaceful. I would add gnats and swarming mosquitos! ha!
Biggest tool that made this all come together was projection mapping. Tbh it is probably the best technique you could possibly use other than a toon shader to bring a painterly look to your work. Projection mapping also comes in handy for making gradient style ambient occlusion effects that also help bring a stylistic vibe. It is literally so powerful.
Throughout the entirety of this video I am thinking to myself "Now how am I going to do this?" I'm sure others feel the same, this is truly inspiring! Love the art!
Very calm and soothing environment; a place that children would love to explorer. Also a good hangout for beetles, birds, trout, frogs and Sasquatch. :)
I've learned more in these 5 minutes than in many months of tutorials. If you want to know how to do this, listen to the techniques he used and get to learn and apply them.
This piece is amazing and very inspiring. I'm a 3D animation student and sharing your process to achieve this work is very apreciated. Thank for that and have a great day !
This get me so hyped about animation!!! I don't have enough time for this new hobby, please stop being so inspiring!!! I'd be sad if you stop, please continue =]
Well timed tutorial! I've been working on something like this and was having trouble figuring out how to add a painted background like you did with the plane, thought it would look weird with the camera moving. Also, interesting process with the water! Great work as always :D
This is breathtaking. I wonder how one could go about doing this art style in a game. The rocks you could probably just paint on and import into the game engine. But I'm not sure how you could add moss onto it - and onto everything else. A system similar to grass, maybe, but I don't really know how that works. (I've only worked in 2D before.) The water, though... I don't know how to get highlights of that exact style. Or shadows, for that matter. The foam can be achieved with a particle system. It's just gorgeous.
There's the simple but time consuming way of just painting moss onto the tops of individual rock meshes, but that obviously limits how you can use those assets to build up a scene, or the more procedural route where you create a height map for the moss (could be painted as well) then create a shader that blends between the rock and moss textures based on height and vertex painting - UE4 has a heightlerp node that allows for just that. The good thing about that latter is that you can easily reuse the different rocks without repetition by scaling and rotating them around, and then simply paint the locations of the moss, or replace the moss texture with something else (like snow). For the water that's something that can be done in a shader as well, mostly by simply multiplying and dividing a bunch of scrolling mask textures similar to what Nintendo did with Wind Waker. You could also hand animate parts like the foam, and again do a bit of shader trickery to make it look less like it's just a flat card.
@@theblah12 Although vertex painting is good for blending different composite materials together, it goes by vertices, so it detracts from the hand-painted precise look unless you have a decently high-poly rock. If it was being done in UE4, projected decals would probably be the best bet without manually hand-painting every rock with vertex paints, but that's just my thoughts :p
i love your workflow, i just started doing cartoon stuff recently, i am doing a cartoon web series i was trying to explain to my set design guy this very idea using 3d to 2d when i saw your videos i was so excited i will be following you to learn this process to show my set design guy what this does to a scene, thank you so much
I feel like saying "its so beautiful" wasnt enough.
Its fuckn beautiful.
agree, thats not enough! this is beyond beauty
LMAO
It just seems so easy it would probably take 200 hours for me to learn this
2000 hours will be correct
Just go for it
5 hour sessions for 40 days. Just over a month doesn't seem like too much!
Think your heads in a fantastic spot jose
i think learning is the easy part, the execution would be the nightmare
perfect merging of 2d and 3d. Watching these are a real treat!
I'd love a paid course on stuff like this but more technical/in-depth, please consider 😍
Yeah the moss green on the rocks really did the job
Same

Would love to see you "redesign" a scene from Spirited Away to 3D!
This! This is what I want!

Mesmerising!
THis is my fav animation style. You did a great job in fusing the 2D and 3D style. So inspiring and creative
Dude, I'm totally blown away by how well you combine different techniques. Really inspiring.
This looks really nice, good job TH-cam recommendations.
I love 2d/3d styles
I really want to explore more of this type of technique. Please keep sharing. So inspiring!
Bruh, you're killing the game
They told me I need nirvana in life. But if I get all the skills u have, i can spend rest of my life without any more urge. Kudos man!!
Very calm and soothing environment; a place that children would love to explorer. Also a good hangout for beetles, birds, trout, frogs and Sasquatch. :)
:)
Wow, just wow.
Sorry, I have to say : you're a kind of genius.
Just beatiful!!!
beautiful scene

Will really love to see more like these ❤
Super awesome! I love how you mix the 3d and 2d! Excellent!!!
completely blown away
There needs to be more behind the scenes channels on this stuff. Its so amazing to see how this stuff is made, I never knew.
Man why are you so underrated? Glad I found your content

An interesting technique for a beautiful result!
This is fantastic man!
This is amazing, great job!
Gorgeous. I definitely don't have the technical knowledge of C4D to make this happen. But I did understand your general process. Very cool.
Awesome!

You'd be surprised what people can do with shaders and the like. Not that I could do anything like this though, it's crazy.
It honestly wouldn't be that difficult; it'd just be incredibly time consuming depending on what type of game it is.

xweert711 That’s where the height blend element comes in, which hides most of the vertex-y appearance of the blend.
awesome!
You're about the slickest 2.5D. All the best to you! You're just so damn good 👍
