It being wayforward some great music and character design is pretty much guaranteed. This game has my attention now and I think its pretty cool they were able to actually throw in yars revenge gameplay in it not just making it a in name only type of thing. One thing I did notice in the footage was the frame rate dropping. I hope they patch that up.
Frankly, I’m loving it. Right now it’s my favorite game on the VCS. It sucks you in and before you know it, two hours have gone by, and, as the married father of three kids, I can tell you how hard it is to come by two hours of uninterrupted time. It’s one of the reasons I mainly stick to retro and retro-styled titles. But I am definitely hooked on this one. I think the gameplay is tight, the whole package is very polished, the music is fantastic, the sound effects are on point and exciting, and the classic Atari references are the icing on the cake that ties the whole thing together. I honestly have zero complaints about this game and it’s leagues better than I was expecting. Easily my favorite game that Atari has released in recent years. Yes I know it’s basically a MetroidVania, but honestly, I was never a big fan of those style of games to begin with. Somehow, they really pulled it off with this one. A+
The original Yars Revenge was the first video game I played, back when I was very little; I am so glad it came back after so many years, and with a waifu 😎
When I was at GameStop earlier today, I found a used physical copy of Yars Rising for PS5, and I think it was about $10 cheaper than digital/retail price. It was the last one they had in stock, so I picked it up!
Yars revenge is IN THE GAME, its just the hacking sequences. I really love the game and really like this character as well as Shantae. I really don't know why people hate this game. I really want the soundtrack of this game.
Wow this is pretty funny, I actually had this game on my wishlist already simply due to the cool looking cover, had no idea it was a Metroidvania (which is one of my favorite genres). Easy day 1 purchase now. Bonus points too, that the main character shares her name with my youngest daughter. Can always count of you guys to review these niche titles I enjoy. Thanks!
Her design and the art style initially piqued my interest but the stiff animations and voice acting kind of puts me off, I'll probably end up getting it later at some point though when it's on sale
Not a fan of the waifu-driven designs of WayForward games but I liked the demo a lot, and $15.5 it's fine for a decent action platformer/shoot em up hybrid. As other person said somewhere else, it would have made more sense if this was a Major Havoc spin-off, given the hybrid mechanic, but I really want to give this one a try.
Wayforward usually does a great job with these open world games so I am curious how they do with this one. Not sure abou the voice on this one though, we wil have to see.
I got the game on launch and I'm enjoying it so far. It's a shame it's not being well received. I hope they'll add harder difficulty or dlc in the future though it seems unlikely
@acebreaker7 the only time I have spent over 30 quid on a game was to buy sekiro and elden ring at full price when they released. Other than that every game I own has been on sale at least 50% off
This looks up my alley but the $30 launch point seems kinda steep for a game of this type. Probably not an immediate pickup for me with all the other stuff competing for my money this month
Is the original Yar’s Revenge considered confusing? This is the first time I’ve ever heard someone talking about “figuring out” how to play it. It’s one of my favorite 2600 games, maybe even my favorite
No, it's a ton of fun in my opinion, especially if you grew up with or are familiar with the original Yars game. The (many) hacking challenges that are based on the old Atari 2600 game really keep it fresh and you can also replay them all indepedently of the main game and even unlock extra (and more challenging) retro stages that way too.
@redleader7988 did those users get a message from the developer thanking them personally for their feedback and time spent reviewing the game? Oh, no? Well…that’s unfortunate. We ARE gamers/users, nerd. Get over yourself.
It seems like more of a game for the millenials and not so much for the older gamers who grew up with Atari 2600 systems. That's fine, if that's where Atari and Wayforward want to take it, but I'll probably be skipping this one. Thanks for reviewing it.

Nah, WayForward games have their own cutesy anime style characters and usually go with female leads but they don't really lean into the 'rainbow' stuff' at all. The main character in this one openly has a crush on one of her male friends and one of the other male characters is happy about a potential alien invasion because there will be 'hot alien babes'. I'm a couple of hours into it.
Ok. There just seems to be so many pink and purple games these days. And characters with gaudy hair colours, it all looks so ugly to me. I suppose it must appeal to some people.

MC is cute. Might give it a try. 2024 is the Year of the Gooner.
hope to see some good r34 for the gooning sessions

I agree , I used to play all night with my best friend when I was young as well . Original was in my opinion one of the best of the atari system games

She sounds like a typical libtard/Harris voter. You know the kind. But the visuals look awesome. Can her annoying voice be muted?

Any recommendations on getting it on the Switch vs XBOX Series X?

well i can imagine a 42 year old game being confusing in 2024
Well... this looks rather brilliant
The game looks promising
Not a fan of Panzer Dragoon Yar's, huh.
lol what were they thinking!?!
The Atari integration is cool, the cute character design is cool... but gameplay is average at best and the world looks butt-ugly. So generic!!
This game is getting torn apart on Metacritic. Is it really that bad? I figure I'll buy it on sale.

Another purple game made by and for the rainbow people. I wonder how well it will sell.

Well, this game looks like generic side scroller 194775. I am sure some will enjoy it though.
Wayforward has been doing side scrollers for decades now. They’re masters of their genre.
I understand that, but this one looks real generic.
