Just found your podcast today which brought me to youtube to see these slides. This journey has been so isolating and lonely and overwhelming. I am drinking up every tidbit of information you have shared. Although I have read everything I can get my hands on, listening to your voices has cut through the loneliness in a way that a website or book cannot. Thank you.

Thank you for this informative episode! Concerning recreational drug use by those with schizophrenia, I believe this might be caused by a co-occurring mental health illness called “substance use disorder.” If accurate, then recurring drug use should be seen as an additional disability and not a reason to deny the reality of the underlying disability called schizophrenia.
“Substance use disorder” is considered a mental illness by medical and psychiatric communities. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) classifies substance use disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). According to DSM-5, substance use disorder is categorized as a chronic and relapsing brain disease where an individual cannot abstain or control substance use despite adverse social, occupational, or health consequences. It is typically characterized by an intense craving for the substance, increased tolerance, physical dependence, and withdrawal symptoms when it is reduced or ceased.
Like many other mental health disorders, substance use disorders can have complex interplays with other mental health issues. Many people with substance use disorders also have other mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety, or schizophrenia.
Love your channel and the great work you are doing!
