    the views are breath taking. Dependent on tourism is great but I hope the city can find new ways to develop a sustainable modern agrarian economy.
    It would bevery sad to see the hmong culture integrate into vietnamese mainstream.

    watching these over a decade after they were posted and still learning a lot. Considering doing this route to see just how much as changed. I know a bunch of dams have ruined the route but still think it may be worth doing.

  • @mshvlinux

    I have just spent 2 days and 1 night in SaPa. I watched this video before I went; and I am very mindful of what tourism can do to a community, so I went with some hesitation. I came away feeling quiet sad. I was constantly accosted by kids in the streets selling small trinkets and when you say no they push into your space and follow you; it was worse than Siagon for me. There are signs up in SaPa telling tourists to not buy from street sellers and by doing so you discourage parents from sending their kids to school.
    What was good about SaPa was the local tour guide who was wonderful. We went out to lunch with him and had a great time with him.. I will some day come back to SaPa but it will be different, I am not sure how because i am also quiet mindful of the trend to have a more rural experience and larger travel companies moving into this space. Hopefully what is unique about SaPa will stay unique and not become a commodity. Conflicted and sad about this place and it's future. But absolutely spectacular.

    Thee hill tribe people I found them very unfriendling unless one bought their products and if one buys from one tribe has to buy something of another, that happened to us and this left a bad taste of northern Vietnam

  • @weewilly2007
    @weewilly2007 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    You seem to be inferring (in not so many words) some quality of permissiveness, which of course could be nothing more than a natural friendliness and naivete, sans Christian-based ideas of morality or immorality, or the hard lessons learned from so-called civilization. This does leave them completely unequipped to deal with encroaching modernity and all its hazards though. Like getting caught in the trap of easy money (to supplement their subsistence living) via a transient population looking for a good time and even more opportunity still. But what is the alternative? education, organization, enforcement? So more modernity still? Or do we put a chain link fence around them and keep them where they are? And who makes these decisions that entire populations and their progeny have to bear?
