How do we know in which cases resonance will be overwhelmed and in which cases it will not? If you could state the examples......

Normally similar cases are compared like two double bonds in resonance will make system more stable than non-conjugated two double bonds. Three double bonds conjugated more stable than three non-conjugated double bonds.
