Just finished my RD250D and kept everything original, runs like a dream. The amount of use it will actually get didn’t really warrant electronic ignition. The bike also had a new wiring loom so that made life a lot easier. Your bike does look absolutely stunning 👍
Thanks for your comments & compliment. Unfortunately it's not looking quite so stunning at the moment, more on this in the next video. I think keeping things standard is a very wise decision as one costly mod leads to another. Enjoy your bike
Great video and I feel your pain. I have an almost identical set up with a neutronic ignition, a motorbatt battery and a Yambits regulator rectifier. I took out the ballast resistor and set the timing 2.0mm btdc. After many months of going round it with a multimeter and making a few repairs to the wiring loom I seem to be ok although I think that I’m a little low on power. I’ll be looking at the carb setting next.
Hi Tom, thanks for your comments. Seriously it's the most frustrated I've been with a bike. There are two more videos in the pipeline, fitting the Vape system and setting up the carbs with bigger jets
Thanks for commenting. It's so difficult to know these things without experience. At best I went barking up the wrong tree more than once and at worse I hastened the generators demise
very interesting - going through a similar process with my own 250D wiring loom right now. Also thinking of swapping the reg/rec for a Yambits/Electrex World one - can you advise where the aluminium mounting plate came from? Looked pretty good.
Hi, thanks for your comment. With the benefit of experience what I'd say is be sure that whatever part you are replacing is the item giving you problems. I fired the parts cannon at my bike and have wasted quite a bit of money. In the next video I'll be fitting the Vape system So far the vape system is working well and it has the benefit of replacing almost all the electrical components in one go. The mounting plate was supplied by a guy using scrap metal from his day job and I think he was trying to convince his boss to produce them commercially. I'll see if I still have his details.
Have a look at the Air cooled RD owners club on Facebook and search for Dave Philo. He made the mounting plate and is making some other very nice parts too
The 2 diffrent batteries will be diffrentt charge rates sealed batt and a wet batt. Reg/rec has to be compatable to whichever battery used. When bike running a voltmeter across batery terminals shud reach a peak of around 14.5 volts 4000 rpm may/ will drop a little as lights turned on and system under load. Seems to me you got a few issues going on there. Alternator if its original to bike will prob have a fault and can be sent off to be rewound. All fixable. Mr phil the dood
Hi there. I have a RD400 and it’s not charging the battery. How to go about troubleshooting it? Where should I start? I checked all the fuses and they are intact.
Hi, sorry I'm no expert on these things. I would start with a workshop manual and a multi meter and see what output from the generator you're getting as far back in the loom and as close to the generator as possible. I think that there is a group of three wires that run up directly from the generator and over the engine to behind the fuse box/rectifier area and connect into the fuse/rectifier assembly. Your system may be different, you have a 400 and I don't know which model so it's difficult to say. If you can be sure the generator is working then it's a case of testing each component at a time with the multi meter, I think it's a resistance test. Other than that I'd check all the earths and any loose connections and of course make sure your battery isn't dud. If your generator broken I'd go for a complete ignition/charging system from Vape. I have one and it's brilliant. Good luck

Incredibly frustrating for you. Electrickery is one area of lost time and sleep when it doesn't work! Not to mention cost.
The splice on red wires are factory splicing

Check green wires ohm text to the outside part of gen and white wires also

Have you replaced the sparks or the plugs
I had the problem that only one cilinder fired and a new spark fixed it
Well done
Thanks

Your coils ain't compatible to your ignition system that you've put on
Thanks for your comment. The coils I'm running came with the Vape system, that's why I had to relocate them.
Go back to normal electric .
