markDitto, when I was a lad of 15 years in a record shop in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England, where I would later in the year see them live, when the proprietor played me Down To The Waterline, the first track on Dire Straits' eponymous first album. I had never heard anything like it. When I did start to be good enough to go on stage, it was as front man and songwriter of a heavy metal band. When learning, I found it a challenge to play lead guitar while singing lead vocals, but eventually mastered it, and stayed in my first band for 11 years, splitting up when the bassist died and the drummer quit. It staggered on with a new line-up for seven years, but never reached the same heights. And although at the age of 59 I love metal, I also love Mark, and the only guitarist I think could be classed his equal, namely Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd.
I just saw him in Milan... and i must absolutely say that he's one of the greatest artists that i've ever seen, with the best musicians that i've never seen...
The solo work here is brillant, wee intro to the solo by Richard Bennett and then MK comes in - Brillant!! I was at the concert the night after this one in the Albert Hall in 2005! MK is as close to God on Earth there is in my opinion!
Lyrics, translated into a live performance and oh, that guitar, hammer on, hammer off, this fellow delivers it all and more, is he the best live guitarist, subjective, personal taste, hard to quantify, but he ticks all my boxes, simply stunning
2005... I would say one of the best albums (Shangri-la) and tours of MK's solo career: great songs and MK still in top form. Shame I missed it because of some last-minute work commitments. Always a pleasure to catch up with some good live recordings. What a great sound quality!
