- Lisa Gade reviews the 2021 Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 503, a thin and light 15” gaming laptop with an AMD Ryzen 5000 CPU, NVIDIA RTX 3070/3080 graphics and a wide gamut 165Hz QHD display. Thanks to our sponsor, Blinkist. Go to www.blinkist.c... to try it out for free! The 4.2 lb / 1.9kg laptop has a magnesium alloy lid and keyboard deck, a chill and premium design with plenty of ports, yet is priced significantly below competitors like the Razer Blade 15 Advanced and MSI GS66 Stealth. We look at the Best Buy config that’s $1,799 and packs the AMD Zen 3 Ryzen 9 5900HS processor, a 2560 x 1440 QHD calibrated 100% P3 display, NVIDIA RTX 3070 graphics, 16GB DDR4 dual channel RAM and a 1TB NVMe SSD. It’s also available with the RTX 3080 and 32GB RAM. You can get it in our Eclipse Gray or Moonlight White.

I have a simple trick to solve your problems with Fingerprint reader. I registered the same fore finger twice (as two different fingers in Windows). Once scanning the very tip of my fore finger and the second time a little below the very tip (with a lot of over lap ofcourse). While scanning the same finger a second time, windows sometimes rejects the scan saying "Its too similar to another finger that I scanned" in which case I move my finger a couple of milli meters down and start again. After about 3 attempts I got the same fore finger scanned into the Windows system as two different fingers. Now my Zephyrus G14 login is flawless. It succeeds every time without any hitch.
This is an extremely detailed review, lots of useful information that other reviewers quickly gloss over. I especially appreciated the way you described the USB-C connector and which GPU is used when connecting an external display.
I certainly agree
I'm not forcing this but I have the most true important information/fact to tell you that you need to believe in. We all are sinners and we must get punished for all of our sins by spending eternity in hell, but God sent Christ, his only Son to take the penalty for all of our sins instead by dying on the cross to save us from going to hell and so we can have eternal life with Christ and God in his kingdom. On the third day after Christ died, Christ rose back from the dead. Christ ascended to heaven and he will come back for his chosen ones and take them to heaven.
Lisa your reviews are always fantastic!! I really appreciate your level headed and fair review style! Thank you!

This is the best laptop since... well Zephyrus G14. I absolutely love this shift towards high-quality QHD displays with decent color-accuracy. QHD is the perfect resolution for laptops right now! It's about time, perfect for gamers and creators alike! Asus is definitely trending great right now! And go Ryzen!!!
would like to meet the guy that chose to put soldered ram on this fine machine...
Soldered RAM can have better performance.
it's a company decision from meetings etc, they profit from this, not a single guy lol
Realistically less than 0.5% of people will ever swap out/upgrade their laptop RAM. Those thinking of this usually upgrade the whole laptop. Performance increases are marginal with "faster" RAM but I appreciate some need more RAM though. The zephyrus duo and this allows the addition of higher capacity single sticks
@@FunFactsAboutTech "it's also true that 80% of statistics are false" ~Elon Musk
people who choose a performance laptop like this are more likely to change something like memory. it's also not just to increase memory, having a stick soldered is a real pain if the memory fails, whereas if it's removable you can repair it in a couple of minutes
@@tomfraser8463 I'm with you and I'd prefer it too. But by the time this happens, it won't be Asus's problem. They know what they are doing
Not in the market for a laptop at the moment, just here to support the channel. Lisa is, hands down, my go-to reviewer for mobile tech. No one else compares. Not even close.
I have the G14 w/Ryzen 9, $1100 @ BBY, love it so much I bought a second one. ASUS is nailing it on the Zephyrus series. Coming from an Alienware 17 R4, I appreciated both the slimmer profile and affordable cost; lugging that 17 R4 through airport security was just ridiculous, it won't even fit in the plastic bins, and it sounds like a wind turbine.
There is a pyramid of laptop reviewers, and Lisa sits atop them all.
Sounds sharp
That sounds painful
sounds like a good time ;)
Not with her midroll ads. So many. Embarrassing by Lisa.
Ouch

Somehow this made me laugh and sad at the same time
Im so happy that my favorite reviewer is local in the DFW area.
I appreciated the comparison with other laptops!
Yes, this one has shortcomings, but you'll be paying hundreds of dollars more to address them with other laptops.
As a G14 owner, may I suggest a very simple trick with the fingerprint scanner. Just hold your finger there a split second longer when turning it on and make sure you hit it straight on. Mine works every time.
I love your reviews. I brought the 2022 model a few weeks ago, your review helped me decide on this one. It's awesome! I was playing Deliver us the Moon and I can't even remember hearing the fans!
Imagine a version of this laptop with a 16:10 screen and a webcam for the professional users...would buy it in a heartbeat!
Yep, that‘s why the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro can‘t come soon enough - 16:10 screen (QHD, color accurate and brighter than the G15), same CPU & GPU, webcam,...

"The future has arrived". AMD is dominating. A laptop that actually excites in terms of performance (too bad there's no webcam). The last time I was this excited about a laptop was Dell's "infinity screen" laptops. I hope to see more AMD laptop solutions from the competition.
I'd love one of these with a 16:10 screen.

lucky you, your wish has been granted with the M16
I've had mine for a weeks and it's the best laptop I've owned so far. Actually had many issues with a System 76 Oryx 6. Had to keep returning it because the screens were having many issues, one unit having too many dead pixels, and the second two resulted in the screen coming undone from the chassis. Luckily they refunded me after the third time, and I got this. Couldn't be happier. Half the price almost, the battery is bigger, 1440p 165hz display over 1080p 144hz, RTX 3070/new Ryzen line, and build quality is very nice. The fans are also way quieter. Can do some gaming off the charger too for a few hours without too much of a performance degradation, which I couldn't do off battery on the Oryx 6. I love System 76 but feel they cannot compete on a laptop level compared to some of these bigger manufacturers. Eventually gonna get a second NVME and put Pop OS on it so I duel boot. Wonderful review.
Been waiting for this review from Lisa. This is the first laptop that’s tempted me to sell my GS65 with a 1070 in it. AMD + 1440p is the clincher.
Lisa, for every tech upgrade I went (or just looked) for in the last couple of years I always end up on your videos - thanks a lot! Love your style
Excellent review, Lisa. Glad you’re back and okay.
The only problem with this laptop is you can’t find it for sale Any where.
Friend of mine is bringing it from the US, bought it from HIDEvolution. They do international shipping as well
I got it from Best Buy like 3 weeks ago. Cost me $1943 which was a LOT. But I’m glad people are giving it mostly positive reviews.

Dude I remember watching you when when I bought an Asus TF300 tablet! Glad to see you’re still killin it 👍

been watching LISA since 2007, when I was in school, now I am a professor at college and I still watch her reviews to select my gadgets.
Great review as always, Lisa! I really love the way you approach laptop reviews, very balanced and practical.

Thanks for the review! Can’t wait for you to get a hold of the upcoming Legion line up. Stay warm.
Excellent review, I've been awaiting mine for about 2 weeks, can't wait for mine in a few days
Lisa..... I just picked up the EXACT laptop that you show in the video. I guess I probably should have done my homework more... as I would have liked to have more easily upgraded Ram... But ya know. I am a stay at home Dad, who is disabled. So I play games on my PC a lot... I don't do any video editing, rendering or anything like that. So I think that the 16 is probably going to be okay. I bought this laptop because I wanted a great machine for the price point. I didn't realize that this was ASUS 's "Slim" line. As I don't mind a big bulky machine. I get a new laptop, plug it in and it pretty much just stays put. It sounds like I poured a lot of money into compact slim design, that i wasn't even looking for. (My last one was a ACER Predator Helios 300 I-7 7700 ) and the size and bulk of that never bothered me one bit. Quite frankly, i liked that it had a full num. pad. Something I miss from the Asus ROG Z. I really Really REALLY wish I had seen your review before i purchased.... I am happy with the machine... though a bit of buyers remorse as I really would rather put the extra money in to Ram, or something, than it being "slim" and "compact"
I am brand new to your channel. This was my absolute FIRST video of yours I have ever seen, and GOD do I wish I had known about you before. BY FAR the best in the business when it comes to these Laptop Reviews. I love that you take the time to compare them while you review. Really helps out a LOT for people trying to pin down the right machine for them.
Thank you so much for your time and this great review.

Hope you enjoy the machine!

Another great review, Lisa.
Is it necessary to buy the extended warranty? I m going to buy this one in the coming days. How is your experience with the laptop?
How much did you guys buy it for?
@@Qjemuse around 1900$ from best buy, but i ended up returning it. Had QC issues.
@@arnezor thanks. But looks like qc is a pretty big deal with this one
@@arnezor Same here. And the QC with the screen because of the ergolift hinge blowing hot air on the screen doesn't seem good...
Did you test the USB-A ports while gaming? The ports will randomly disconnect while the GPU is running. It seems to be a bandwdith issue on the chipset. The issue does not occur if you are using the USB-C ports.
The G15 is a great laptop. It gets loud and requires some tinkering but the speakers are amazing, the screen is crisp and you can even run VR smoothly!
Admittedly I wish mine didn't cost £2,500 but hey, I guess everyone has treated themselves one way or another this pandemic!
I'm still waiting for the Asus ROG Strix Scar model. It has the similar specs with the same GPU but with a much higher TDP at 115 Watts (130 Watts Power boost) in comparison to this laptop being at 80 Watts to 100 Watts. That means more FPS for the higher TDP.
Damn I forget you was in Texas. Prayers up for you and yours.
Thank you. It was a horrid week, but things are getting back to normal now.
@@mobiletechreview Glad to hear it. Much love from The Bahamas.

I have been looking at older reviews and I love the fact that you keep the native way of telling the basics and that you present yourself in the same way through the years. Keep up the great work.
Regarding the keyboards on the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14/G15: i have been looking at your Vaio reviews and you like the keyboards - are the Asus ROG Zephyrus keyboards about the same fell and quality?
Thanks!
I actually prefer the G14 and G15 keyboards to the Vaio Z.
@@mobiletechreview thank you for your reply.
Then the G14 is the right replacement for my old Sony Vaio. 😃
Great Vid! The amd vari-bright setting needs to be mentioned more. You unplug your laptop and wonder what is goin on with the screen, turn the brightness up and it’s still slightly off. Well... there you go, Vari-Bright... in Radeon settings. 🤦🏾♂️
Varibright is an atrocity, I don't know what they were thinking at AMD. Probably leads to decent number of laptop returns when there's nothing at all wrong with the display panel.
Thank you for the review. I also think two ram slots would be better. I am looking forward to watching the review on the legion 5 2021.
i love her style of review. showing the desktop and moving the mouse around awhile speaking. new fan!
im convinced i need a QHD. i think 1080p is way too small for productivity. glad this exists. although G14 small size and weight seems awesome.
Looking forward to seeing some reviews of the 2021 G14.
Thank you Lisa!
Definitely getting this gaming laptop when I upgrade in a couple years
Lol at the rate they are going you might not even consider this when you're ready 😅
Just a minor correction. Intel doesn’t have the better single core speed anymore. I have this laptop and a GS66 with a 10870h on my desk. The GS can hit a few hundred MHZ above the 5900hs but the AMD benches higher. It’s very close, but higher.
I can't believe this is what is considered a 'good' laptop today. I bought this to replace a almost 6 year old HP Omen that had started to show is age, boy was I disappointed. I'm not going to ignore the PROs it's a beast under the hood, unfortunately it a very garage hood. First, it doesn't close. The screen is slightly warped, there is a very visible gap when shut. Oh, and about the screen, it's terrible. It suggests from the worse backlight bleed I've encountered on a laptop. It's not just a few spots, is the entire edge of the screen. Plus the calibration on my unit was so bad, did hours in I still can get it to look right. Last, this keyboard, goodness. The keys are extremely loose, and I feel if I put anymore pressure beside a feather touch the key would snap. I'll say it again, I can't believe this is the bar was as a community have lowered ourselves to. I'm picking my 6 year old HP over this, it can still run Fusion 360, I'll hopefully good out for something that is actually good.
Lisa I've been watching your videos for like 8 or 9 years and I just want to say I love you ♥️
Shame that they couldn’t fit this into the G14 chassis. That laptop is basically perfect in terms of size-to-performance.
I'd sure like to have the RTX 3070 with the 32GB of RAM!!!!!!!
Fantastic review! Thank you. :-) I think this will be a great purchase, minus the webcam and soldered RAM situation. 2022 models are also using the RTX 3000 series, so I really didn't see much of a reason to go with that over the 2021 RTX 3070 model. Maybe a few more benefits like DDR5 and a webcam, but not worth the price difference in my opinion.
I hate this trend of no webcams. Thin and lights are for taking everywhere. So if I'm on vacation, of course I want to Skype sometimes and don't want to take a separate webcam with me.
I think most people have a better front facing camera on their phone than a laptop webcam
It's not great, but if you're going to carry around something this big (yes, it is light for its class, but it's still big), then a small separate webcam isn't going to even be noticeable. And you're not going to be carrying around a device this big like a tablet much.
I was lucky enough to get one of these guys from Best Buy, but I decided that the Asus Strix G15 was a better fit for my needs. A bit more power on the GPU and much better port layout.
Thank you for all the efforts you put into this
Gosh I love your passion on laptop reviews!
I love seeing young / middle age women getting into this previously male-domianted industry, great to see :). I felt there were like a billion ads but I'll let it slide. Great review.
Another fantastic review, Lisa.
Literally the only thing missing from this laptop for me is HDMI 2.1 output. I was soooo close to finally buy a gaming laptop after years of contemplating the idea.
I hear you but I saw another TH-cam video that showed you can get a USB-C to HDMI 2.1 adapter and have it work that way, fwiw.
Thankyou very much for this review, plus congratulations on journey towards your personal health and well being.
I’ve picked the Strix Scar 15 version of this instead. Still waiting for it though, can’t wait!
I have the same decision... happy?
I don’t get why the uk has this exact model but more expensive and with a Ryzen 7 processor?
yeah im looking at the uk ones as well, it's most likely tax. tax isn't usually shown in initial US pricing.
Yup, and it's not just the Zephyrus G15 that this is affecting. A lot of the new Asus gaming laptops have the 5800HS rather than the 5900HS for UK/Europe, and OF COURSE we're being absolutely swindled on the price.
Still, the performance difference should be minimal, but it irks me that we're getting a slightly less powerful CPU.
@@ClockworkSatan yeah same. I noticed that. I'm still thinking of getting the Strix G17 model just because of the bigger screen and i've been due an upgrade a while.
Yeah it's really annoying.
Just import in Europe prices are crazy high
Wow thanks for that deep dive?! Only reviewer I know that has so much going on!
Lisa is freaking awesome!
I heard that the Strix and Scar G15 and G17 offer a QHD display but they are having severe supply issues with it beyond the supply issues with the cpu.
No numpad is one thing. No normal PgDwn/PgUp/Home/End buttons on a 15 inch laptop is a complete mystery for me. I get that this is a gaming laptop, but it could be easily used for work too if it wasn't nerfed like this...
Blizard of texas... nice. I was without power for a bit less than three days.
Good reason to have a large capacity battery!
Overall a great machine - a bit disappointed in no webcam, but as I understand it was a design choice to improve durability.
Interesting suggestion to use the USBC to DP to HDMI to make up for lack of mux switch.
I would be curious as to how well this could be overclocked, as it clearly has some room in the thermals.
Strongly considering this or the MSI Stealth GS66.
Thanks for the review.
Are you concerned about the way that heat is fanned out through the back of the machine onto the screen? Surely that'd affect longevity of the machine?
I really appreciate this review, Ive been recently going on a rabbit hole trying to find a new computer, and I felt this was the right buy but I wanted more reviews on this. Thank you very much.
Are there any other laptops that are as good or better than the G15 at the same price range?
Right now, the G15 is the one to beat for thin and light gaming laptops at this price point.

The fact that in the UK the Ryzen 7 version costs the same as the Ryzen 9 in the US is so disheartening. I want this laptop so bad lmao
Your review is really unique and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I'm definitely a fan
Great review Lisa. I already ordered one, but you pointed out one thing that concerns me. So it is not possible to use the integrated GPU while connected to a monitor over USB-c?
I am planning to consolidate my current desktop, laptop and work laptop into a single computer. It will be docked 75% of the time. I am concerned that having the dGPU active all the time will result in loud fan noise even while running light (or moderately cpu intensive) workloads. Is this a valid concern in your opinion or am I just looking for ghosts here?
Thanks again for an awesome review.
The DP over USB-C ports do bypass Optimus, going straight to the Nvidia GPU, but not the HDMI port.
Thank you for the review Lisa! I am currently trying to decide which Asus laptop to buy!

On the hunt for a new machine to replace my heavy Origin Eon15X, which is now 3+ years old and getting worn out. This is definitely a contender! Ryzen is definitely a selling point at this moment, especially because AMD runs cooler.
Great Video Lisa! Quick question, would you consider this over the Razer Blade 15 2021 3070rtx? I know it is a bit more expensive but that it isn't a problem personally. My biggest concern is overall reliability because there is not Zero support from Asus and Razer in my country. Basically, someone is buying the laptop from USA and bring it to my country. So, I won't be able to return it neither. I am looking for a very solid and reliable gaming laptop mostly for work and some single player gaming like GTA V and maybe Cyberpunk. I would really appreciate your opinion. Thank you

for work and play, this is a fantastic piece of machinery. it is extremely powerful, and despite some consumers having issues out of the box, I was lucky with a perfect specimen. Has run every game on Ultra, and for work, the ryzen 9 and 16gb of ram provides everything you need and more for running basic virtual machines. as far as power for price, it doesnt get better than this laptop. you would pay 2x-3x as much for less capable macbook
