    I have an '04 Mazda 6 and it's one thing after another. Grinding starter, clutch went at 50K miles, just like most of them, everything squeaks and rattles, passenger window doesn't go down all the way, etc.
    I seriously doubt that an RX8 is much better. If it is, I'd be amazed.

    Not really that many large changes, 3rd oil injector and various other stuff. They just changed something to do with the ecu and cobb said there wasn't a big enough market to fix it to work with the series 2. From reading on rx8club it seems like to swap an s2 engine in would be a TON of work and probably a good amount of money as well.

    My understanding was it wasn't the oil per say that was the problem on the 03-05 RX8's it had more to do with the oil jets in the rotor housings or lack there of. I believe they solved this problem in 06 by adding an extra oil jet to the housing.

    You sir are a genius. Someone who actually understands the simplicity of the rx8 that is conceived as something that is too complex due the fact that peoples mind are just too closed to the concept that is the rotary. Best car I've ever owned in my life. its a sports car who cares about MPG but i average around 20 on the highway anyways. 132k original motor miles on an 04. still going strong. people need to not listen to the general consensus because they are missing out on a great car.

    I test drove both and ended up buying the 09 RX8. The engine is so smooth and near silent when cruising and then turns to a fire breathing (literally) monster when you get on it. Sure, it's not as powerful as the Z. But, to me it's far more fun in the corners.

    I have a 2005 model. Here in the UK prices have dropped quite a bit ovr the last year. if you are looking for one for £7K or less then you can get an immaculate 276bhp model (up to 2005 i think)
    However if you're have a bit more it is worth going for the later facelift model which has a couple of tweeks and a stronger engine that revs higher and has more power.
    All the engines are very smooth, so are quicker than you think, just take youre time choosing the right one

  • @Hangule4
    @Hangule4 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Noted that your oil consumption may vary with driving style and engine condition. Also many many owners simply don't know how to take care of the engine. It's only a few habits that need to be changed and they're not big. The biggest issue with rotaries are how sensitive they are to modifications (major mods, not bolt ons) if it weren't for their good designs they wouldn't be revving to 9k rpm redline

    i just want to clear up the oil thing, the RX burns oil in the combustion process in a similar way to the old two stroke motorbike engines, its not a fault, its a characteristic of the rotary engine so if you buy it, expect to top up your oil every few of tanks of fuel (or around 1500mls i think) it doesnt return good mpg numbers because it is in effect a 2.6ltr performance car. It does need to be handled differently from a standard piston engine but that is not a negative its just DIFFERENT! I

  • @Hangule4
    @Hangule4 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A better comparison would be to add a turbo kit for the RX-8...that's really the only way to make any significant gains. If you know where to look a whole turbo kit can be sourced for about $3000-$3500 assuming you do all the work yourself. On a completely stock engine that could be good for about 260 whp which is a pretty significant gain, great for daily driving without being too aggressive

  • @Hangule4
    @Hangule4 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It is nice...sometimes I really miss low end grunt especially being able to speed through without having to downshift. In the RX-8 power is really missing out in the low end. But then again the 9000 redline does make up for it!

    what was your motor oil of choice when you had the 8? i recently switch to synthetic, first time since i bought the 8 in late 2004, since 04 and til now, i always got my oil change at the mazda dealer, but i now do oil changes myself, my 8 is just over 32,000 miles. I used mobil 1 5w30, but i'm gonna switch over to Royal Purple 5w30 since royal purple has been proven to be safe for rotaries, based on Royal Purple's testing and a statement them selves

    @ski77z 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    also you say you have only 32k on it,. you can go with synthetic for this oil change,. i remember some one telling me that if your seals are begging to wear out the synthetic can actually help keep the seal,? not completely sure on that bout sounds possible,? if so id keep the synth going for a few k miles then flush it out with regular oil,. also make sure you drain the oil from your oil coolers and check them for damage they are really important to keep your engine alive,. do you own a ATorMA?

  • @Hangule4
    @Hangule4 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Tuning options for RX-8s isn't that bleak. There's a few good group of people who've gotten near 210 whp with bolt ons and a tune (which is more like a 20 hp gain rather than 30 hp). You can get a COBB AP for around $500 and tuning is much cheaper if you go with Mazdamaniac. That along with a full exhaust, intake, headers, ignition system and you can make good progress. A set of lighter pulleys and flywheel will also help out a lot (just not on the dyno)

    I've had an RX-8 for the past 2 years. Yes the original motor was replaced, it's a 2004 model with all the notorious engine problems. Newer engines don't have anywhere near the reliability problems that the old ones had and I've clocked about 30k miles on this engine with 15k miles turbocharged. And no it's not the apex seals that go out, this isn't the RX-7. It's the side seals/springs that go out with heat/low oil. These are rotary engines and they eat oil about a liter every 5-6 fill ups.

  • @NateRist
    @NateRist 10 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I smh'd when he cold started the RX-8, and people still call rotary engines "unreliable", hmm I wonder why....
    Oh ya, ignoring the required oil changes every 3k miles is okay, rotary engines can run on dirty oil for another 2-3k miles just fine... (Still wonder where the bad reviews come from yet?)
    I should probably drive nice and slow in my RX-8, I heard rotary engines break down often, don't want to drive it too hard, don't want to hurt the engine... -__-
    "What engine does your RX-8 have?", "Oh it has a renesis rotary", "What's that?", "I'm not sure exactly, I think it's like a V6 or something" #killmenow

    After owing an FC3S I can guarantee that a rotary does have an engine life and from the many owners that i know and having experienced it myself a rotary should do 150k km or 15 years. But the bonus is knowing the signs of a bagged out rotary can save you a fortune. The engines are easy to rebuild. If all parts and tools are on hand 1 guy could easily do it in a day.

    The RX8 wasn't really designed for straight line racing, it's kinda like a bigger slightly more powerful Mazda Miata. I driven both cars and I actually own a 2007 350Z, I love both cars to death and their both fun in their own ways. I love how the Z just flexes it's muscles just powering through gears and I love how balanced and easy it is to throw the RX8 in any direction you want without any fear that it will over power me and try to kill me lol

    The 350Z and RX8 are good cars in their own way. And, I like both. Different cars suit different people with different needs. RX8 is more practical and comfortable with decent power while the Z has more power, torque and muscle. RX8 wasn't designed to be a hardcore sports car while its older brother, RX7, was. Rotary tuners and experts always feel that it is unfair to compare RX7 and RX8 together cause their design purpose was different in the first place. ;)

    @sonic8002 The reason why the RX8 is 4 dr is because of its a 4dr sports car is cheaper on insurance. My friend has a 350 he paid about 17K out the door , my other friend paid about 15K for his S2K. I just bought a RX8 it cost 6300 Haha. I'm saving up for coilovers they're still making payments and their insurance is painfully high because they're around 26 yrs old etc. I'll never pass them on a touge run but I can easily keep up, once I get some $ for parts it'll be a better match.

    @leolim79...I realize that Mazda took a different direction w/the Rx8 and that's exactly why (expecially after owning an Rx7) I voiced my opinon in this "Rx8 vs 350z" video in favor of the 350z. The Rx8 isn't the dedicated sports car that the Rx7 was. The 350z IS a dedicated sports car. I hope Mazda goes back to their roots w/the "Rx" series and makes the inevitable Rx9 a dedicated sports car w/2 doors, more power and torque and no back seats. Considering there are very very very few options for tuning a 09+ rx8 everything you say sounds like bs to me. The one options that is out there right now is using an adaptronic ecu which costs at least $1500 for the unit and that does not even include the install and tuning. Also you are not going to gain 13 hp from a high flow cat, you wont even gain that from a cat delete.

    So explain me why on the top gear test track, the aston martin DBS did a 1:23.9, and the Aston martin V12 vantage, with the same engine as the DBS, but much lighter, and more track focused, just did a 1:26.8?
    both the E46 M3, 350z and RX-8 did a 1.31.8 on top gear. But everybody knows that the M3 is faster than both the 350z and the RX-8....

    Now that's pretty significant! I've done a whole intake/header/exhaust on a 08 Scion tC and that barely netted me like 30 hp...on a good day haha

    Great video. I love the blending so we can see both cars together.
    I drove a Z, Rx-8, S2000 and SKY Redline when I was deciding on the car I wanted.
    The RX-8 is limp-wristed and boring. The S2000 is incredible quality and top of the line, but a bit too small. The SKY is an even better value, but even smaller. At 6'3 I just don't fit in those two.
    The Z is powerful, masculine and had the biggest "smile factor" for me. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it.

    @asdqwerdsasdafasfa El 350 tuvo varias evoluciones y no solo cambio el motor de 300 a 313cv, también tuvo mejoras en el chasis ¿que versión probaste?. Me llama la atención la falta de bajos que le achacas al Z.

      UnitiveWILLIAM24 you can turn it off in the same radio menu that you use for the music EQ. it's literally after the bass/mid/treble settings. pretty dope actually imo.

    I owned an Rx7 (which was better than the Rx8) prior to getting a '07 350z. I love the rev-happy rotary engine & test drove the Rx8 in hope that it would impress me. IT DID NOT. The ONLY thing I miss about my Rx7 is its agility. Though the Rx8 is also more agile than the 350 (because it's lighter in weight) the 350 has more torque, acceleration & stability. Also, it doesn't have gay "suicide" doors & pointless back seats. The Rx8 isn't the dedicated sports car that the Rx7 was. 350 all the way.

    far quicker? not really when they had a run on the Top Gear track, both the rx8 and the 350z got the exact same time.

    i just bought myself a 2006 rx8 and it is fuckin amazing, it feels so light handles so brilliantly and that engine just loves to rev......so what the mpg is terrible! just go without luxuries like cigarettes and booz because the rx8 is way more exciting than anything else!

    Well, here, most of RX8 cost 8000$~, while 350z, I saw some for 9000$~, even if most of them are 12000$~.. That's quite good no? I mean, even if the 350z is way bigger, it still has more power, but yeah. I'd still take the RX8 I guess. O.o
