Great playing from Seamus. For those of you asking about the tune name, it is indeed "Emily's Reel" by Cape Breton fiddler and musician Otis Thomas. Just so you fiddlers know, Seamus has modified the tune quite a bit to fit the flute and his style. The flute is a 5-key, cocus wood, NICHOLSON (not Pratten) design flute by Virgina maker Patrick Olwell. Best,
Zac
tooo beautiful - on the day they laid my dad to rest, i wandered into a church in Ashland and heard him play. the healing strength of music lifted my saddened heart, and i shed tears of joy that soothed my soul.... happy to be alive... the music lives long after we are gone...
One of my all time favourite youtube videos.
Oh yeah ! 10 years after that video got me started in Irish Trad I keep coming back at it ! (And I still sigh at how much work I still have to put in my ornamentations !)
Thank you, Seamus, for helping to make The Brothers McMullen such a wonderful film.
This guy is amazing! Seamus Egan is so talented. This is played with such enthusiam and emotion. Keep it up Seamus xxxx
Seamus you are a gift to this beautiful music. I love all of this music and I love you x
pure beauty of Irish music that is hidden in simple tunes combined together in a pure melody of Irish Country
Ye top playing , beautiful, 👍☘️☘️🇮🇪🇮🇪👏👏👏👏👏👏
Brilliant work here! An astounding feat of control, stamina, and inspiration :D
That is why I loooooove this instrument. Keep the spirit of celtic music on!
amazing..really! i love the irish music and you have a gift...
Yay!! finally, real Irish music, played by a real musician. NO MORE IRISH WASHERWOMAN!!
That was rocketing. Loved every second!
yeah i posted it so that everyone could appreciate his gorgeous playing... maybe even be inspired to take up the wooden flute ;)
I started on Irish wooden flute and later took up silver flute as well, just out of curiousity. The fingering does resemble silver flute slightly, but a lot of playing the simple system flute is learning your ornaments such as grace notes, taps, rolls and crans, which is more similar to playing bagpipes than silver flute. As far as embouchure goes, you could get a sound off a wooden flute, but you have to learn to adjust to get a focused and strong "Irish" tone.
I totally agree. We need more of the likes of Seamus Egan to Josie Mcdermott!
I'm english but it is my fave music. Irish music is the best! x
Dude, that was really good! by appearances you do that so effortlessly,
I'm impressed, thanks! Berig, Rochester, NY
he play it so good thats beautiful sound just love it
Great work!!! The timbre of the instrument is incredible!!
I'm an intermediate wooden flute player and seeing this both inspires me an frustrates me. Back to practicing. On a side note: great hair!
Posiblemente, la persona que más influyó en mi vida musicalmente hablando.
this dude is a wizard! respect!
@zusammenwirtanzn Yes. You can find some makers that make the holes smaller and closer together, but the flute will be quieter. Some makers specialize in ergonomics to make it more comfortable.
Beautiful playing. I suddenly need to learn that tune.
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucking good!!!
I'm a fiddle player , and the last time I tried to even get a note out of a flute I nearly fainted! Standing for about half an hour trying to blow into the thing right while my friend ( who owned the flute ) was just standing there bowing away on my fiddle XD
Wonderful!! You are without a doubt a very skillful musician!
ht flute touch the heart
i really want to visit irland and drink beer and dance tell i pass out :)
peace out
Amazing. I wish he would play more flute when he tours with Solas.
Irish music is the best!!!!
A true artist..
Not only are you absolutely amazing at flute, but you have a WONDERFUL head of hair too!
Fantastic!!!
Hahaha!!! Truer words were never spoken!
Cool! Nice sounds! Good luck! I wish I could see more of your videos
Oh by the way, for those of you complaining that his playing is boring or sterile or repetitive or whatever... this video was originally in the "Mad for Trad" flute tutorial CD-ROM, and hence was meant for intermediate level students develop basic technique and style. It is deliberately played in a "held back" kind of style. Apologies if this was clarified elsewhere in these comments.
ghotay3: He's in the ballpark of 104bpm -- not excessively fast for Irish reels at all.
I think his playing is outstanding.
this is amzing its great and i like it
Well Done
The music was so good, I started to play my Bodhran to it! 5/5
It's Emma's Reel. There's somewhere in the world a flute tutorial by Séamus Egan which is not on sale anymore.
Beautiful stuff!
This is awesome!!!
lovely!!!
There is so much proffisiecy and finnes in this song i cannot even begin do describe it
Finally nailed this one tonight! :)
Really Gooood!!!!
hahaha you're so right.. i love irish music very much too that i listen to it daily. i wish i had an irish flute. Im mexican by the way lol.
It's called Emily's Reel, composed by Otis Thomas.
Wow, how does he get such a crisp tone?! This might have already been established, but the name of the tune is Emily's Reel.
@Pippitypopify Of course it's not too late!
But it is easier to learn the flute if you play the pennywhistle first. It has the same fingering as most Irish flutes, and it often costs less than six bucks. It's also very easy to learn.
wow.. simply wow i am going to be as good as him one day
I'm getting a Tipple PVC flute which I have heard are great starter instruments. Mine will be black, 3 piece tuneable, with fajardo wedge installed, left handed for $95 including shipping.
Great stuff! Love that tutorial CD. :)
He is not playing a Grinter. He is playing a flute made by Patrick Olwell, of Virginia. It is a five-key (no long F) flute made from cocus wood. There is a six-year wait for a flute like this.
I know the exact same pain. I play upright bass in orchestra and flute in band. I'm playing piccolo in march this year.
BEATIFULL!!
Love it.
wow i wish i could play that
I took a few classes from him at the Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp... he's like an orasmic flute player.
thats great!!!
I'm speechless.......!
very nice!!
VERY AWSOME!
FLUTEZ ROCK!!!LOL:)

It's never too late!

that fella has a good set of lungs on him a plesure a listen to
Cool!
say i like or dislike the video is one thing but saying this guy is a horrible person is something completely different , randomers coming to watch this video cant tell if hes horribe or not he could b perfectly lovely for all we know!! this video is about the music and not Seamus as a person!
wow brilliant!proud to be irish !!! lol :D
Also a great banjo player
thank you :p
@Faucharde
it differs alot particually if the flute has keys like this one they are in the key of d so the main difference is that you are using the keys to play your natual and flat notes it takes some getting used to but is definitley worth it with some perserverance i play both and when i switch back to my classical i go to play f# but instead am play f naturals things like that check out mcgee flutes he has a fingering chart on his website
@Lisnageeragh Thanks :) I'll look around for one..
thumbs up!!
He has. He is part of the band Solas.
Tune is called Emily's reel.
qhy are people like you alive? this man did a great job.
yes, it's a cran. quickly and slightly lift of the 3 and 4th fingers progressively. eh... that's a really over-simplified explanation, but it will give you the idea.
Rule #39: Live your life and fulfill your goals and dreams how -you- want, now how others want. It's -your- future, -your- life. Everything else is just the setting and audience.
(:
see those fingers flying! :O
Haaaaaaa..... Always wanted to learn how to play....
I'm giving myself a week to learn this tune.
Super! :¬)
listen flute very fun
@sciamhach Same, besides most of the time Silver Flutes just don't get that robust tone you want
I can totally play like that too..
For those of you that don't know, this is Seamus Egan, the flute player/multi-instrumentalist (check out his banjo, mandolin and guitar playing) of the Irish traditional band "Solas". Look 'em up. They are all world class players:)
