@@robertakerman3570 But it is enticing no? There is an obvious but trivial solution at x=2, but there are other solutions, including non-integer. If I put this on an 8th grade exam I'm sure my students would bring out the torches and pitchforks. So at what grade level would I expect students to solve this?

X=2 and 4 - trivial solutions and maybe some more to compute.
The first one is the x is really done twice. The second one the 2 is left alone since x is not telling you what to with the 2.

"Can't learn it half way". That and note taking is about the best advise anyone could ever give you when it comes to math. I was a pretty successful person in my life and a whiz with computers. I had almost no parental input in my schooling as a child and didn't spend much time on math studies. However, I did get excellent grades but never retained much of my math studies. I was able to overcome my lack of math skills by my skill with a "computer". As a senior today, I have this huge regret that I didn't learn math as well as I should have. So, I come here and other places to learn what I missed. I've had to go back to the beginning and start over. At this point I don't need this to make money or to be successful. I only need it because I need it psychologically. For the kids who think it is not important, it is. It just may take a long time to figure out how important it is. Learning for learning's sake!
Mathematics in our country is much more difficult than that.

@@swms26 I misunderstood him. He said you SHOULDN"T get something like 9.5. I was a bit confused and wondering where the 9.5 came from.
