    Welcome to the 2020 virtual Indigenous Literacy Day celebrations!
    Join the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF), long-time supporter Archie Roach and ILF Ambassadors Jessica Mauboy, Andy Griffiths, Shelley Ware, Anita Heiss, Natalie Ahmat, Gregg Dreise, Jared Thomas, Alison Lester, Josh Pyke, and co-patron June Oscar AO who will be sharing their insights and stories of community engagement. And Jessica Mauboy will sing a stunning rendition of ‘My Island Home’.
    The production is designed to be a highly visual event to inspire broader Australia about the value of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s first languages and why learning in language is important.
    Kids and community members from Tiwi Islands and Jilkminggan in the Northern Territory and Bidyadanga in Western Australia share their stories and the value of language, and Cheryl Lardy reads Yu sabi densdensbad? (Can You Dance?) in Kriol.
    “At ILF we understand that early literacy is the cornerstone of success in education,’ says Karen Williams, Executive Director of ILF, “We understand that encouraging early literacy requires children and their parents to have access to books and that children need to see themselves in the stories they read. They need to see that their culture is cherished and their stories are celebrated by all Australians. We welcome everyone to join us for what we believe is an incredibly positive story, and one that all Australians should be part of.”
    In previous years, this celebration has taken place at the Sydney Opera House with children from remote communities, local schools and ILF ambassadors and supporters. This year, due to COVID-19, it is open, for the first time, to everyone - Australia-wide.
    The ILF is a charity of the book industry and focuses on 3 programs for remote children and their families: Book Buzz supports early literacy; Book Supply provides culturally relevant books and books translated in language; and Community Literacy Projects engages communities to write and illustrate their own books in their first language. Donations to the Foundation fund these programs to communities that need them most.
    The Foundation is encouraging everyone to donate. Every $10 puts a book into the hands of a child in remote Australia. To donate go to ild.org.au
    Viva Energy Australia is proud to be the major sponsor of the 2020 Indigenous Literacy Day Premiere event, celebrating literacy and language.

    Such a moving production. Well done ILF and Happy Indigenous Literacy DAY! SO wonderful to hear about the books in First Nations languages, and especially to listen to the read aloud. Great to learn more about the projects and the behind the scenes collaborations. You are making an impact and educating others about the value of Indigenous literacy and literature. Respect and love to you all.

    What a great idea! I can certainly relate to the young children in this video and the rest of the Indigenous communities. As a child from migrant parents I did not know how to read and speak English when I started school at Melbourne in 1968. The teachers basically ignored me in class and of course came along the racism that I have experienced in all those years growing up. It was extremely difficult. I struggled for many years at school. My first language is Greek. So happy to learn about this Literacy Foundation, well done guys. This warms my heart. Here's hoping and praying for a brighter future to all the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

    This is so incredibly inspiring! So wonderful to see all of those kids genuinely excited by reading and creating, growing strong in their culture and keeping their communities strong. As a pre-service teacher this gives me such motivation to share Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language and stories with my future students! Keep up the amazing work!

    I am a grade 3/4 teacher and our students are working from home remotely. We would like to be a part of this day. How can we get students to watch this from their homes? Can you please confirm that the time is 12.30pm? Thank you

    • @IndigenousLiteracy
      @IndigenousLiteracy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Melissa, thanks for your message! This event will go live at 12.30pm, and will be available on our TH-cam in perpetuity for everyone to watch - so if 12.30pm doesn't suit you, it's not a problem as the event can be viewed at any time afterwards. Simply send the URL link to your students and they'll be able to access from home.
      We also have a second event aimed and Primary school learners, which goes live at 2pm tomorrow 2 September via Sydney Opera House. You can register for this event here: go.ilf.org.au/learn
      Registration is free, but booking is essential. Sydney Opera House will send you a link once you've registered, which you can send onto your students.

    Will you be adding anything about the Torres Straits? We are a very small remote school in the Torres Straits. I don't see anywhere on your program about the Torres Strait Islander culture.
