My horses use to get themselves into situations like that all the time, and they had two eyes! It's just horsey behavior. The amazing part to me is that he stayed there for God only knows how long, and waited for help to come. There are a lot of story's of horses who had to be put down because they panicked and struggled to get free. Buckees was smart enough to know mom or dad would find him and cut him loose. You can see where he was panicked from the sweat on his body, but he didn't struggle. That is when you know you've done good by them. He felt safe and secure enough to just sit tight and wait it out. He'll have forgotten all about in a day or two for the most part, except for maybe where that barbed wire is!

Buckee knew you would come and rescue him - he knows and trusts you both so much. You did a great job removing him safely from a very precarious situation, and got the right help to make sure he will have a comfortable night and the best chance to a full recovery. He's a trooper. Most Horses would be extremely skittish after wounds like the one on the ankle. That farrier is an awesome resource for you guys. Jamie did great and so did you Les. I know you'll give us an update later in the week.

The start of this video really stressed me out- it could have gone from bad to really really bad fast. Luckily you were able to keep Buckees calm and not thrashing around. Buckees was not going to miss that evening dinner, that was cute seeing him trot over to his stall barn. Glad you guys have courtney and Ashley- as a resource, their vast knowledge is a real blessing.
I had a horse do that as well. I'm very happy to see he was smart enough to stay in one place. Looks like he had a friend stay with him. He knows you are trying to help. He's in good hands, I know!
Hey Lester and Jami, here’s an idea to think about. Perhaps you could reach out to the folks at the church for some of them to help clear out a lot of that old wire in the back pastures; and you could provide them with a huge picnic or barbecue event in thanks. I know they weren’t the original folks your family gave the land to, but it would be a great blessing to everyone. It would be like when the Amish community gets together for barn raisings. They use your one field for the kids to play soccer for free and it would give their community the opportunity for a get together event. They could even bring sides, etc. if you supplied the hamburgers and dogs. The kids would love watching the animals too. 🌺🌸
I wouldn’t order slides. They can bring their own fold out chairs and tables and use the pasture the kids use for soccer. As for insurance, The Morrow could ask them to sign hold harmless forms. The kids wouldn’t be in the pastures and the back pasture could be emptied of animals. I think it would be much less likely the parishioners would sue. The kids have been playing on the fields and petting the animals through the fences for years. I will admit I am a softy and think they are decent people and would be willing to help out. They have been helped by the Morrows over the years and might be willing to make a fun day of it for their families.

My stomach dropped a moment when he limped, as you are right most broken legs for horses is a death sentence for them as it was what took my horse when her back leg completed shattered and never got a goodbye from her. What I worry about now is infection or tetanus from the barb wire setting in but so far his chances are extremely good with your tender love and care for this baby.

Poor Buc-ees! I feel his pain and fingers crossed for a speedy recovery! I honestly appreciate how ‘real’ you guys (Lester and Jamie) are showing the good-bad-ugly sides of farming. I only have 1 big dog and 2 cats so I have to live vicariously through your videos.
I noticed the same thing and agree that he may need a visit from a vet. Maybe he needs his teeth floated. Some horses developed sharp edges on their teeth and their mouths get tender from the teeth rubbing against the inside of their mouth when they eat. A vet will file down those sharp areas.
Sending love and prayers for a quick recovery time for Buc-ees. He is in the very best hands now, and we know that he could not be more loved than he is with you. Happens a lot horses want the grass on the other side of the fence ~~we got rid of all barbed wire except for on top of smaller animals pens to help prevent predators until we were able to place panels across the tops and enclose the pens fully~~~ barbed wire also flexes and the horses will press against it and stretch it to loosen it up ~~ or he may have been using the post to scratch against and when it broke he lost his footing and got tangled up ~~~ if only bigs in back pasture use same posts, but run straight wire in 3-4 lines~~ make sure that you keep each line connected so if needed you can make it a “hot” fence so to not only help keep your babies in but also help keep any predators outside the pasture area.~~ id keep him stalled till his wounds are healed well enough you know he won’t be able to get dirt inside of wounds and also until he quits favoring his sore foot, walk only to keep muscles from cramping up on him and I did morning and evening to help keep muscles “warmed up and flexible “ he will let you know what he can tolerate ~~ if you think it’s deeper like a muscle/support body weight thing a splint/ankle brace may temporarily be needed for support to help him get back to normal without accidentally stepping down wrong and re-injuring himself or prolonging his pain. You will know by his body language and how much he missteps when walking or by how much he favors his foot ~~ remember with soreness/injury day two is always worse than day one especially if swelling is gonna happen if there’s a sprained (if you see swelling and he’ll let you do an ice pack or use a ziplock freezer bag and duct tape(only on bag) wrapped around ankle only for max 15mins then wait an hr before trying again is what we did oh and use an old dish towel to put against skin so ice pack isn’t directly on skin ) ~~ Buckees was just being a horse I hope he’s able to get comfortable and heals quickly

Stall rest for 5 days with walking each day; he's gonna miss his buddy Voodoo. At least their stalls are next to each other so when Voodoo eats they will be close to each other. Get well soon buddy!

Happens a lot horses want the grass on the other side of the fence ~~we got rid of all barbed wire except for on top of smaller animals pens to help prevent predators until we were able to place panels across the tops and enclose the pens fully~~~ barbed wire also flexes and the horses will press against it and stretch it to loosen it up ~~ or he may have been using the post to scratch against and when it broke he lost his footing and got tangled up ~~~ if only bigs in back pasture use same posts, but run straight wire in 3-4 lines~~ make sure that you keep each line connected so if needed you can make it a “hot” fence so to not only help keep your babies in but also help keep any predators outside the pasture area.~~ id keep him stalled till his wounds are healed well enough you know he won’t be able to get dirt inside of wounds and also until he quits favoring his sore foot, walk only to keep muscles from cramping up on him and I did morning and evening to help keep muscles “warmed up and flexible “ he will let you know what he can tolerate ~~ if you think it’s deeper like a muscle/support body weight thing a splint/ankle brace may temporarily be needed for support to help him get back to normal without accidentally stepping down wrong and re-injuring himself or prolonging his pain. You will know by his body language and how much he missteps when walking or by how much he favors his foot ~~ remember with soreness/injury day two is always worse than day one especially if swelling is gonna happen if there’s a sprained (if you see swelling and he’ll let you do an ice pack or use a ziplock freezer bag and duct tape(only on bag) wrapped around ankle only for max 15mins then wait an hr before trying again is what we did oh and use an old dish towel to put against skin so ice pack isn’t directly on skin ) ~~ Buckees was just being a horse I hope he’s able to get comfortable and heals quickly

Poor sweet Buc-ees! Horses may not "jog"--but Buc-ees was "hustling" to get at his "comfort food" and his comfy and familiar space where he knows he's safe and snuggled . You folks are so amazing
As you probably know, if a horse can get injured it will. It's a on going effort to keep them safe. You do a very good job of watching and protecting.

Stall rest for 5 days with walking each day; he's gonna miss his buddy Voodoo. At least their stalls are next to each other so when Voodoo eats they will be close to each other. Get well soon buddy!

Poor Buc ees you guys take amazing care of all your babies and you're friends are always ready to drop everything and help out in a crisis amazing. Hope Buc-ees heals well 5 days in the stall is not going to be fun for him but I know he'll get the extra love and attention to make it fly by.
