Are Vinyl Collectors Losing Their Minds Over Mobile Fidelity? Will Their Records Lose Their Value?

  • In this video, I discuss the divide in the vinyl community over Mobile Fidelity and the revelations that they have been using digital files instead of being pure analog. I also start an experiment to see if their records take a hit in value. I show Mobile Fidelity records from bands/artists such as Simon & Garfunkel, Charles Mingus, Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Miles Davis, Eagles, Supertramp, The Allman Brothers, David Bowie, and more.

I don't own Mo-Fi vinyl, so I don't have a basis in which to judge, but from a consumer perspective, I can understand both sides of the argument. They ask a premium for their product and therefore consumers expect it to be the best in class. Which includes having authenticity. But, after listening to the interview and understanding the process in which they use, I can appreciate the knowledge and technology that went into producing a product that sounds superior.
With that, I'm going to purchase a few records, from Mo-Fi, to hear their product for myself.
In the end, I find it amazing and awesome that vinyl has come back so strong and that we are even having a discussion about this situation! I never thought I'd see a vinyl surge after the CD and MP3 age. Not because of the sound difference (good or bad), but from a portability perspective. But, here we are, talking vinyl! How freaking great is that!!!!

Its technically a great sounding product, generally speaking, but the nuance is its not the same product they priced for. There needs to be a price reduction to reflect this and, if people say they will continue to pay the same price, then the wrong signal is being sent. The rest of the community suffers if people support the old price and this causes the old price to remain in effect. Time for a little solidarity to ensure they revise their price to something fairer.

Melinda, I respect your choice to continue to buy MOFI records. They do sound amazing and you are getting a fantastic sounding record. But I implore you to discourage people from spending $125 retail on them. They would never be so expensive if MOFI didn't purposefully limit the quantity of pressings, which is the reason the secondhand market got so crazy in the first place. Now that we know there is no reason MOFI couldn't have pressed these records indefinitely and sold them at $40 a pop, we cannot support their current pricing model.

    • @FionaAppleRocks

I have 4 Mofi One Steps and 2 UHQR. This new debacle only reinforces my buying plan of picking and choosing titles I really like and not just trying to scoop them all up just to have, which I was about to get into doing. I think we will see a short-term dip in price but it will adjust and things will go back to normal and people will forget. The sound is what people for the most part want. Aloha Melinda,
    Great Video.
Sad to say the controversy will live on.
I my self was bummed, because of the price I was paying, thinking it was all analog. I don't have a high end turntable Stereo system, just a fluance turntable with a Otofon blue. I would think you would need tube amps to get that warm sound if I'm not mistaken, not to sure about that either because of todays technology. So I really can't tell if it's analog or not. But I know I like the sound. Some are upset also because they thought they knew the difference between pure analog, versus others sources added in & now they might need to Re-evaluate their system or more importantly their ear and their humbleness.
We are all human, an as a subscriber of video channels I still enjoy watching all these great channels.

Thank you Melinda. I remember when sacd's came out and how it was explained to be the equivalent of analogue in the way it captures and is able to reproduce music. It's process is known as DSD. Now I'm just a music lover.... not an engineer, but if the technology is analogues equivalent, then it only makes sense to capture those original tapes this way and play them as little as possible to preserve them. I really love the multi-channel sacd's that go back to the multi channnel tapes which were used to make the original mixes because they have been played less, and consequently have maintained better resolution and have not been worn out like the 2 channel mix down masters (which is what are used as original masters).
My point is the high res dsd files that MOFI used are the equivalent of those original master tapes. It enables mofi to make a better project and the proof is in the sound. I heard Mike's (In Groove) impression of Thriller with how MOFI has removed some compression.... or didn't add it to the same levels as the original. This makes me excited. I mentioned before that the 1 Step of The Eagles S/T hasn't sounded as good as a first pressing till now, and I think the warehouse fire that destroyed many original tapes played a role in this. I think they used the back-up copy from when it was first recorded to make this 1 Step because it has only once before sounded this good.
This gives me high hopes for the Van Halen catalogue. I have not only the full VH catalog on order but the whole Eagles catalog as well.
This was too long winded for me.... forgive me, but I am still a fan of what MOFI accomplishes. I'm an even bigger fan of your channel now.

John, well stated. I think at the end of the day this whole Mofi issue will be a wake up call. The wake up call is education. Part of the education is don't assume anything. Whatever the topic may be it is important to educate yourself as much as humanly possible. That way in life you can make hopefully proper choices. Another part of education is understanding how something works. In this particular case Digital audio and Specifically DSD .
I currently own Four Mofi LP's. Nowhere on any of these fine records does it state analog was utilized every step of the way. But yet many customers assume that they were. And I understand why they assumed that simply because of the language that was used. Such as "original master recording" and "Analog ultra gain",etc. One of my Albums is the MOFI 45 rpm 2LP version of Dire Straits Brothers in Arms. Great album and fantastic sound. That album was originally recorded with a Sony DIGITAL recorder! I have hundreds of records and this has to be one of the best sounding I own. In my opinion the best of both worlds. With that said the use of DSD to capture audio signals is brilliant. I recommend vinyl lovers read up on how DSD works and hopefully this ease their mind. Best of both worlds!

Also, MOFI should maintain a catalog of all their titles so there is no over priced resale. These records should be available to all. Take care and keep up the great content

I can certainly understand all the frustration for collectors that bought the records with the understanding of them being all analog. For me I love records first and foremost but have a large collection of cd's so I am not analog only. If it sounds good that is what counts. Melinda, I think one thing we are owed in the vinyl community is an in depth look at a lone subject; THE MASTER TAPE. What it looks like, what good tape is made of, what makes tape deteriorate and what makes a master last. Is it scientifically realistic to think master tape will last for decades and decades? Are we fooling ourselves not accepting digital in some instances? Were the vinyl diehards right when it comes to overall sound quality? Or was CD everything they said it was in the end? What famous albums are the very best they could be now? What albums are never going to sound that great? There’s a lot of questions to ask, and maybe we won’t get 100% closure on answers. But if we could get some deep insight on recorded music and its science, it just might bring some more careful thought to the table.

I'll share my opinion on this controversy. First, let me clarify that I don't consider myself a record collector, though I own hundreds of LPs. I buy what I like and want to listen to. Secondly, I'm an engineer with college courses in electroacoustics, digital and analog electronics. That probably skews my outlook on this topic.
In my opinion, a digitally mastered LP will most likely sound superior to an analog mastered LP, all other things being equal. If anyone has listened to the first digitally recorded LP (From Wikipedia: July 11, 1979: The first U.S.-recorded digitally-recorded LP of popular music (with vocals), Bop Till You Drop by guitarist Ry Cooder, was released by Warner Bros. Records). The album was recorded in Los Angeles on a 32-track digital machine built by the 3M corporation.[30][16]), you know what I mean. There's no tape hiss and no loss in the recording process and the drums and other high frequency content is stunningly clear. Would it make sense to create an analog master from the multitrack digital tape? Not to me. That seems very contrived and a bit misguided.
Melinda, I'm not sure if you clarified, but are the MoFi releases with a digital step in the chain from an original digital source or were the digital masters generated from an analog source? I think it is important to understand the motivation for using digital in the chain. There may be very important reasons for MoFi's choice. If it is for reasons of recording quality, it is defensible.
I think the customers of MoFi should be asking them to be transparent in their descriptions of their releases and specify how the recording was produced from beginning to end. Remember the three letter designation that CDs used - AAD, ADD, DDD to specify which type of multi-track, master, and (redundantly) CD media were used in the generation of the music? Perhaps that is needed here.
Thanks for moving this conversation forward and appealing to everyone to maintain their sanity over this. I appreciate a voice of reason when emotions can flare. Keep up the great work, and sorry for the wordy comment.

From what I understand, they go on location to the analog tapes and create a high res digital file. Then they take back that file and work with it on their own equipment. I think from that point, they are going back to an analog process. They take their time and go through a lot of test pressings until they have "the one." The records usually sound amazing. I'm never disappointed. The secrecy is what is hurting them with audiophiles. Thank you and take care.

Hi Melinda. I am not going crazy about the subject but I will look at things differently. Case in point was that I cancelled my One-Step 33RPM iRobot order and I opted for the Music on Vinyl iRobot edition (2013 from Discogs), which is sourced via digital, saving me half the cost. If I was willing to get a digital version, why not choose a cheaper digital pressing? MOV records are often very nice and clean and great quality.

I agree with Michael Fremer that each new mastering to vinyl has to be taken from case to case. He said unless we can compare a vinyl from a known all analogue source, to a Mofi mastering side by side, we, don't know what we are talking about. We don't know what problems there may be & the work involved to do a original master recording & make it sound great. Are some of the original tapes good enough to listen to now. When an original tape is being worked on it may need some digital help to make a good copy for the cutting process. I enjoy working in my home recording studio recording singers & musicians with Mac Logic Pro. I transfer vinyl to CD for people who don't won't to use a turntable anymore. I try to improve the sound if the vinyl has not been kept in good condition. It is still better to keep our LPs in good condition & keep on playing them.

Hi Melinda. This Mobile Fidelity (MoFi) digital issue has me torn. I was only nine years old when MoFi started producing records in 1977. I started buying/collecting at a very young age, so I remember seeing their records at "high-end" stores and thinking it was crazy to pay around $25-$30 for a record! (The first one I remember seeing is Supertramp's Crime of the Century.) Several years later, I started finding MoFis at used record stores (usually for under $5 each!). I fell in love with the high quality , and grabbed as many as I could find. I was still buying vinyl way into the "90s and was happy to see MoFi jump back into the market with their Anadisc 200 series. I consider myself very lucky to have many of those '90s pressings.
I am so disappointed to learn of the "digital step" in recent MoFi pressings. I am convinced the human ear cannot detect the difference between analog and digital, but still we were deceived. To find out that many of my favorites that I purchased from Music Direct ("Kind of Blue," "Blonde On Blonde," "Tapestry," "Nillson Schmillson," etc.) were transferred from digital files, really cuts deep. (This information is now admitted on the MoFi website.)
In my opinion, Analogue Productions (AP) has surpassed MoFi in terms of quality, production, and reputation. Chad Kassem from AP appears to be a true fan of the music (like us), and seems to really care about production quality.
I'm not saying I'll never buy MoFi vinyl again, but they need to earn my respect again.
Just my two cents. Heck, I still go crate diggin' on Saturdays! I look forward to your follow-up video. I really enjoy your channel. Please keep posting!

  • @glennsmusicchannel

It's been interesting watching this issue with MOFI playing out. Here's what I think. No one really tell the difference between analog and digital unless it's a low quality digital source, like CDs or MP3s. Even a CD source will be hard for most listeners to tell the difference. But the high res digital files - no one can tell the difference. MOFI just made fools of those of us who have said all along they could tell the difference. This does include ME at one point awhile back, but in retrospect I think I was hearing a not-so-high res digital sourced vinyl.
Lately, I really haven't been able to tell the difference. Meanwhile, analog tapes from the 70s are now 50 years old. Even the 80s were now 40 years ago. Those tapes aren't going to last forever and some have already disintegrated. Also recall that huge fire at Universal that destroyed thousands of popular artist master tapes in 2012-ish.
I think the analog junkies have a GOOD POINT that Mofi should have been more transparent with their sources. However, we all know how that would have gone, and we're seeing it now. They should have been more honest, because that's the ethically responsible thing to do. But I think it underscores the point that they'd be telling people something that would have freaked them out and possibly damaged their brand, even though the resulting music sounded better (according to the engineers' description of how they capture these recordings for remastered) with a digital link. They are still using analog processing after the high res digital source, and frankly, that's where the analog sound really comes from. Because the digital files already sound exactly the same as the original tape at a time previous to when they would have been used again - and at that point, it's reasonable to assume the original tapes have deteriorated in that time, even just from running them for the last master.
So, I don't think it's really worth each camp going after each other. This is a time for 1. more transparency regarding the sources for each record, and 2. some humility from those who probably now realize there is no audio difference, given how they're done by MOFI, between a remaster with a digital step and one without.
We all learned from this experience and now have to both hold MOFI account, and realize that we have better wisdom now regarding the actual difference between sources.

Agree with your comments Melinda, and respect the other side of the argument. As my Pastor used to say, we can disagree without being disagreeable. Record collecting/sound is up to the individual, much like wine tasting/drinking. One camp talks about where the grapes are grown, and how they were crushed, etc. etc. However in the end, what do YOU like to drink? The same with the records, if you like the sound, buy it.
On the other hand, your S&G "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is their crowning achievement. The Wrecking Crew backed them on a number of the tracks. Listen to "The Boxer" carefully and turn it up loud. It is an incredible song when you know the history behind the recording. The legendary session drummer Hal Blaine created the huge drum sound with the help of producer Roy Halee, who found a spot for the drums in front of an elevator in the Columbia offices. As recounted in the 2011 Making of Bridge Over Troubled Water documentary, Blaine would pound the drums at the end of the "Lie la lie" vocals that were playing in his headphones, and at one point, an elderly security guard got a big surprise when he came out of the elevator and was startled by Blaine's thunderous drums. According to Hal, it scared the living HELL out of that security guard and he got back in the elevator and went back downstairs. At about 4:35, the chorus ends and the guitars fade out and you can hear Fred Carter (playing the guitar "off" of Paul's sigh. He said Roy Hallee had him mic'd six ways from Sunday. The only thing I have against MoFi is not being transparent about their sourcing. I think people would be more understanding if they said, for example "Hey, the Rolling Stones tapes are no longer usable, so we're going with a Hi-Res digital files." As long as they sound great, it doesn't matter the source. Obviously they've been "tricking" people into thinking their digitally sourced records are analog based on the sound quality, so they must be doing something right, right?

I have heard that the jazz master tapes are holding up well but tapes from the 60's, 70's and 80's are degrading due to being on cheaper quality master tapes. At some point, they will all be useless but we will most likely not be alive when that happens. 😀 Thank you and take care.

Great video Melinda. I feel both sides of the MOFI argument. For those that feel they were deceived or lied to by Mobile Fidelity, I understand their frustration. I think if something says Original Master Recording, it implies it was cut from the original master tape... not copied to 4xDSD and then cut from that. On the other hand, as long as Mobile Fidelity keeps putting out amazing sounding records, I will continue to buy them. In the end, it's about the sound quality and not the source. That said, MFSL needs to be up front and honest because they haven't been and have flat out lied in the past about their chain and sources. Anyway.. great stuff. Rock on!

I think people are really conflating 2 separate points. Point 1, The records have a digital step and they sound fantastic. Point 2, It's ok to feel a bit deceived. They didn't lie but weren't exactly transparent. Frankly, I think they were in a rock and a hard place. They knew digital was the best choice for quality of what they were doing, and also knew the crazy psychology involved with Audiophiles. Case and point being made right now with everyone flipping out. Personally, I think it's hilarious and find the anger misplaced. I think people are more upset at themselves for believing only all analog can sound good and all digital is bad and realizing that is wrong.

You're flat out wrong, John. Sound and music in particular are naturally analogue, and recording it deserves an analogue treatment. There is no dispute among audiophiles and sound engineers that using an analogue master tape source to cut a record all analogue results in the best possible sound. DSD may be very good, but in reality it's a pipe dream for those who want convenience and profits.

    • @jnorten
      @jnorten 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@audiophileman7047 Totally Disagree. Show me your blind tests? I've been a mixing and mastering engineer professionally for over 20 years now, and engineering in studios since the late 80s, yes all on Tape back in the day. You also really need to keep in mind that a high end digital copy will always be a more accurate representation than Vinyl. That said, more accurate is NOT necessarily more pleasing. I love vinyl, I love what it does, I have a big collection but it certainly isn't the most accurate representation of what the artist was hearing in the studio.

    • @audiophileman7047
      @audiophileman7047 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jnorten I don't know what books on recording you've been studying, but every one I've seen clearly points to superior sound in all analogue recordings. Chad Kassem and some of the most respected sound engineers have said this. Digital takes naturally analogue sound coverts it to digital code by limited, imperfect sampling of the analogue sound curve. Then the digital information is converted back to the analogue sound you hear with less fidelity. Texture and warmth are lost. If you don't think that there will be losses in sound quality from such a process, then there is no hope for you understanding the difference. To prove this unequivocally, have you ever heard a vinyl record cut direct to disc? It is an all analogue recording that is as close to the actual sound as possible. It absolutely, positively beats anything I've ever heard including 45 rpm!

Interesting. Just saw where Mofi has now disclosed on their website that all of the 1 steps were taken from analog master to DSD 256….except it doesn’t say that for the Van Halen releases. Hmmm…possibly they are from the analog tapes? Also, all of them mention DSD 256 but the Miles Davis 1 steps are DSD 64, which is not part of that 4x DSD the engineers were speaking about. I have to assume its the same digital copy from the regular release but that means they probably wasn’t using the higher digital resolution then but are now.

I'm not an audiophile and only own one MoFi album in my collection but I understand how people might feel deceived... I would personally give my money to a company or a label I can trust. Amazon had them both one clearance. I think I paid under $40 for each. Within a year the In A Silent Way was going for $150. I think we will se the prices go down a bit because of the recession, but ultimately MoFi still has the name and will remain the most valuable audiophile records.
