A 3rd gen Uzbekistan-born koryoin here, thank you so much for this video! ❤ I recommend watching a documentary 'Koryo-saram: unreliable people'.
34:18 the document is a birth certificate, in CIS countries it states your ethnicity, not nationality.
16:57 Koreans started moving to Russian Far East a bit earlier than that, around late 19th century, larger part moved after 1900 and 1910 after Japan annexed Korea
21:16 Out of South Korean dialects, Koryo-mar (Koryo-saram dialect, descended from Hamgyong dialect) is probably closest to Kyeongsangdo dialect, it has pitch, and we also say 짐치, not 김치 and 아바이, 어머이 dad/mom. Mostly kinship terminology is closer to Hamgyong dialect, like 아매 grandma, 아재 aunt, etc. 아바이 , 아매, 맏아매, 맏아바아
57:57 Park Solomon(Lomon) is Uzbekistan-born, he starred in 'All of us are dead'
Btw Sofi Manassyan is half Koryo-saram, her mother is a Koryo-saram from Kazakhstan

Here in Busan, we have quite a few Koryo citizens related to the shipping industry and I enjoy meeting them with my Uzbek friend. Their relatives living in Central Asia have apparently preserved Korean traditions better than in Korea itself. I loved listening to these guests and just noticing small differences like their posture and cadence compared to the Natives.

The cadence I can definitely pick up on. It's marvelous. The posture was never something I considered actually. Would actually be very interested to hear more about this. We spoke before the recording started about whether they can spot other 고려사람 from a distance. For example, Daniil and Yona are both in my same class but didn't know each other previously. However, they were able to tell that they were part of the same community.

What do you think we can or should do to make people more aware and understanding of the Koryo Saram experience in Korea?

Local media depicting them more would be interesting.
To my knowledge there's only one full-on movie set among the Koryo Saram called 'Wedding Campaign'. Apparently it did pretty well but it came ou in 2005!

There were many Korean Independence movement fighters among Koryo-saram, imo more representation is needed in media, popular culture... I just read Pachinko and I believe the history of Koryo-saram could also be made in a beautiful story

    Hello David
It was a great pleasure to watch the video u've made.
To be honest, me and my scientific adviser (prof German Kim) together conduct a research on the same topic - the identity of diaspora (our target diaspora is Korean diaspora of Kazakhstan)
good luck to you, keep in touch

Thank you for the interest in the video and the lives of these people. It's great to know that there is research being done to help understand things more clearly. I'm sure Daniil and Yona will be very happy to know about this. Should you ever have any questions, please feel free to get in touch.

I've made one interview on topic of Korean Identity (but it is in Russian)

@@Yefrem_YefremovI don't speak Russian but the subtitles are very useful. Thank you for sharing this with me. I'll have a proper look when I'm at my desk this evening and also share it with some people who might be interested in it.

During the Japanese occupation of Korea 1904-1945. There was immigration from Korea to Russia empire and then to the Soviet Union . This results in Korea becoming the second largest ethnic group in the far east of Russia.
After the battle kalin gol 1939 Stalin ordered to move all ethnic Koreans to the Asian center to prevent spying from Japan. And immigration from Korea was stopped during the second world war
During the immigrant era, Koreans still lived in Central Asia

Нет, почему вы все до одного говорите лишь об убекистанских корейцах? А как же та группа, которых вывезли насильно на Сахалин? В Корее остались семьи и хозяйство. Им просто не дали вернуться на Родину даде после войны.
