      It couldn't have been good. They should have filmed it. Seeing the miserable old cuss get angry when proven wrong would have made a great All the Stations Extra.

    The "Dove" in Dove Holes comes from Old Celtic "dwfr", meaning "water". Thus, Water Holes. Dover also comes from "dwfr".

      Historically (before 1974), New Mills was on the boundary between Derbyshire and Cheshire (the River Goyt), so _all_ of New Mills wasn't in Derbyshire before that date. It's true that it's never been part of Greater Manchester, though.

    • @carriageofnoreturn.1881
      @carriageofnoreturn.1881 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hello Tevildo - that's indeed true, though only the civil parish boundary was changed in 1974, not the ecclesiastical parish boundary - so people who live over the river are still considered to be Cheshireites for the purposes of getting married at the Parish Church, such are the joys of straddling a border! It also means that trains in New Mills are that bit more expensive when going in to Manchester - and why I sometimes drive to Marple to catch the train from there.

    I was on that train you caught from Ardwick. In all the years I've been on it, you were the first ever to board in the direction of Manchester!

    Vicki's reaction at 7:50 - priceless! That's what the views of the Peak District does to you! :-)
    Must say they've could have filmed more at Edale - the start of the Pennine Way and mention the Kinder Trespass which led to the movement of establishing National Parks in the UK, and the Peak District being the first (and best) one :-)

    So much to' enjoy. Ardwick; countless times I've been past on the train, never seen anyone get on. And that line to Buxton; did it back in the 1980's with a chum, on a day of such deep snow that people were going up from Manchester to Buxton to ski. Train rammed with skiers. St Anne's Wells, wherever they occur, are usually for helping people with eye problems. Sigh. ADORABLE! Onwards!

    Locals do not fill up waterbottles as the water out the tap in buxton comes from the spring , in fact the water in buxton water bottles travels 2 miles out side of town in a pipe to the bottling plant

  • @philipvellowwood
    @philipvellowwood 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Why the Pride & Prejudice reference at the beginning? (0:05)
    a) Because you filmed it 1 day after the 200yr anniversary of Jane Austen's death (0:04).
    b) Because the line into Disley (2:53) passes through Lyme Park where Colin Firth filmed P&P.
    c) The 5th Duke of Devonshire (4:38) lived at Chatsworth, reputedly the model for Pemberley.
    d) Some other reason...?

    • @telephonebear21
      @telephonebear21 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't want to sound like a humourless git if you're joking. But an honest/honesty pot is for paying in when there's nobody there. So you take a pot of jam, and put a leave a bit of money to pay for it. Obviously nobody can force you to pay, but if you do pay then it's very honest of you.

    4'16" "People are just walking past, why aren't they just filling up their water bottles?"
    It's because they live there.
    Oh btw it's not spring water, it's natural mineral water, and there are laws protecting natural mineral water, whereas spring water can just come out of the tap. Check the label when you buy a bottle, NMW has to have a chemical analysis of the composition.
    The water coming out of the well is hydrothermal and has been percolating through the local schism in the rocks for 5000 years.
    It comes out at a constant temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, regardless of the time of year.
    The owners of Buxton Mineral Water, the Coca-Cola company, would love to shut down that well, but they aren't allowed to, so anyone can fill as many bottles as they like from there for free.
    Beautiful video, love the channel.

    fab video loved it .
    i was brought up on the station house on the station platform. My mum lived there for 40 years, rented of british rail i spent many happy days playing trains with all the station signal footplate staff .i still think the station is the quantest station in derbyshire.xxxxx
    About running trains on the monsal trail. When peak rail was in buxton in the eightys thay tried to open the line to matlock from buxton but br and derbyshire council wouldnt let them .
    thay got driven off the sight because buxton water wanted the grounds so we got lorries instead of trains (so so wrong grrr)
    just emagine catching a steam train to matlock from buxton i still hope it happens.

      Well, "dove" is a fairly broad category, but I would suspect that most people in the UK use it to refer to the collared dove (_Streptopelia decaocto_) or the turtle dove (_S. turtur_) rather than the pigeon (_Columba livia_). Geoff may want to clarify. :)

    I loved seeing you discover The Torrs Gorge on your walk between the two New Mills stations. There's a brief shot of the Millennium Walkway - a fantastic piece of engineering, partly cantilevered out from the immense Marple Line retaining wall. I love it. And I love it even more, getting a lump in my throat, every time I look at my photo at www.flickr.com/photos/brigster/30608588773/in/album-72157646619167688/ . You can scroll left and right for other snaps in that location. They're all in my photo odyssey, The Mersey from sea to source (not completed yet) Anyone interested in the whole point photo odyssey should scroll all the way to the bottom of the photo/page and click on the thumbnail for the whole album.

    Yay, New Mills! Been there with me parents countless times growing up. Been to Buxton a small handful of times too.
    Oh, hey, Marple, too. Yeah, been round there a good number of times.
    Been to Edale ONCE...would like to go there again.

    I grew up in New Mills. I know these places well but have unhappy memories of them so perhaps for some it's not so awesome. New Mills is the real Royston Vasey never mind Hadfield!!

    Think Ardwick needs a little TLC. Though for an urban station the grass must be fairly unusual.
