    Airship colonies in the Venusian atmosphere is a good setting for a science fiction story.

    • @numberjackfiutro7412
      @numberjackfiutro7412 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      And the only realistic way to colonize Venus this century. At about 50km up, conditions are second in habitability only to Earth. Cities towns and villages could be built to float at this magical altitude in the Venusian atmosphere. Colonization of Venus's upper atmosphere will probably become possible in the 2030s, the same decade colonization of Mars will likely become viable.

    • @user-hm4cd8eh1i
      @user-hm4cd8eh1i 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Winds are far too strong in the upper atmosphere so I don't think for this reason cloud cities will ever be a runner on Venus.

    • @CarFreeSegnitz
      @CarFreeSegnitz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Why there won't be airship colonies on Venus:
      1 - too dynamically unstable. One malfunction, one puncture and all or a portion of the colony gets dumped into one of the most hellacious environments in the solar system.
      2 - the tech to remain aloft will need to contend with high winds and corrosive atmosphere.
      3 - why? There's no commercial driver to motivate a floating colony. Science? Done far more cheaply and safely unmanned and/or from orbit.
      4 - return will be nearly impossible. Venus has nearly as much gravity as Earth so large energetic rockets will be required. 100% of the return fuel will need to be brought because ISRU in the Venusian atmosphere lacks the elemental inputs needed. Anyone with aspirations of coming home will need to work out how to deliver and float a fully fuelled return rocket... over and above floating habitation modules.
      Nature is under no obligation to make habitable areas of our solar system easy to access and return from. And no amount of foot-stamping and wishing on unicorns will make a Venusian venture economically viable.

      @@CarFreeSegnitz My counterpoints
      1) That makes things much more interesting and dangerous. Cool
      2) So what? Nice challenge
      3) No worries I have all the motivation necessary to make Venusian sky habitation possible. Yes some guy on the internet really does as hard as that is to believe. Anyone can be on the internet, you'd be wise to remember that ;)
      4) So many things have been said to be impossible/nearly impossible and proven wrong over time. No, it is not nearly impossible you just don't see how it could be done yet.
      We're going to sleep in the skies of Venus one day =)

    Venus is so underrated! Thanks for giving her some love.
    I don't think humans will ever overcome the gravity issue. Making Mars an unhealthy place to live. With almost the same gravity as Earth she's just a diamond in the rough. With tons of potential

    • @numberjackfiutro7412
      @numberjackfiutro7412 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Humans are likely really flexible when it comes to gravity. So long as it's not microgravity, I bet we could adapt to it and remain healthy. The gravity isn't the main benefit to Venus as a colonization target, the main benefit of Venus is it has an altitude where temperatures and pressures aren't much more than those on Earth. Mars has no altitude at which atmospheric pressures equal about 1 bar, and we need at least half a bar of atmospheric pressures to survive!

    • @Jordan-Ramses
      @Jordan-Ramses 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Are you insane? Its the hottest planet in the solar system. It rains melted metal and the atmosphere is high pressure sulfuric acid. Didn't you watch the video? We can't even terraform earth.

    • @Sapequ
      @Sapequ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Scott Humphreys it’s only that hot on the surface and lower atmosphere. If you go higher in the atmosphere it’s very similar to earth. It has the right temperature and pressure. You can’t breathe there because it mostly carbon dioxide but that makes oxygen and nitrogen lifting gases which is handy in staying in the cool upper atmosphere of Venus.

    • @BogWraith1
      @BogWraith1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Biggest long term problem with Terraforming Venus is that it has no magnetic field. Without that, it would make it so even if we could go there, we'd most likely need to live below the surface which nullifies the whole reason for wanting to go there in the first place!

    This video does not talk about it, but certain things in this video may be related to each other:
    Isn't Venus' lack of a magnetic field due to it's slow rotation? Isn't rotation necessary for a planets core to be able to generate a magnetic field in some way?
    I have also understood that Venus' loss of hydrogen molecules into space after the runaway greenhouse effect was eventually due to the lack of that magnetosphere.

    Well we know thet our earth's core in theory has 3 parts and the core with the outer core rub against each other making the magnetic field! But if venus is spinning backwards it may effect it. If the core is spinning counter clockwise and the planet it's self is spinning in the direction then probably the outer core and the inner core sping in the same direction, but the core spins a little faster making the weak magnetic field.

    Hey John, great video as always. Do you plan on doing some more theoretical videos on how could life look like under the ice of Europa or other exo terrestial objects?

      Yes, I've been planning a video on convergent evolution with just that purpose. Not sure if I will finish it this month, but it's coming.

      @@JohnMichaelGodier sweet! I've been waiting for more videos on this topic from you and Isaac for months, haha. And there's just not enough quality content on this matter on youtube (and written media too)

      @JohnMichaelGodier  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, very little, which is why it's taking me so much time to do the script. But I'm obsessed with it, and it's a definite for a video.

    Venus is earths sister planet born last when Saturn went nova, so around a million years from now will have a breathable atmosphere

    One of AC Clarke's stories (I don't recall which one) had a scenario where far out in the solar system we would nudge thousands of comets (after wrapping them in foil to protect from the sun) into a collision course with Venus thus replenishing the water and kickstart the terraforming. I've always loved that scenario. How spectacular that would be.

    So far, four people have disliked this video. I think TH-cam should make it mandatory that if you dislike a video, You need to leave a comment explaining why. Do four people just hate Venus?

    • @Yokozunastyle
      @Yokozunastyle 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nog because if we dislike and its a subjective thing called taste we talk about, we should not Be forced to engage in the thing we disliked enough to make it known. I only would consider to auto-leave the video or just continue before pressing dislike button that will kick users pressing it before its finished.

      Some people don't believe that Venus exists. They pray that the Earth is destroyed, so they can be Raptured to Heaven, and eat pork chops with Jesus.

    I think sometime soon people are going to wake up and view venus with the same interest as mars. I keep looking for in depth info about it and just cant find very much, seems like an enigma we havent yet completely figured out how to properly explore.
    Watched Mars all summer from here in CO, now Venus is coming out in the early am, just incredible. Cheers!

    • @rohansingh1999
      @rohansingh1999 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Venus certainly is an enigma.... I'm sure it hides many secrets... It's even got it's own "stealth cloak" with it's thick refractive atmosphere to keep any scopes from looking to deep. I find the lack of info or interest about Venus suspicious too.... It's the closest planet to earth but all we hear is Mars talk.
      Seems like intentional misdirection to me... I would not be surprised if there have been some secret Rover missions to Venus that we don't hear about, or some other juicy top secret info.
