I started selling firewood three years ago as a side hustle on the weekends. You’re exactly right about the importance of clear communication with the customer. My business has grown tremendously thanks to repeat customers and word of mouth referrals. In my area I sell oak for wood stoves, fireplaces, etc. I also have a lot of customers that request Hickory, Pecan and Mesquite for smoking meat.
Your statement about keeping customers happy I tell every new salesperson I encounter in my job as a salesperson for a pump manufacturer. I tell them it’s doesn’t matter what your boss says your number one job is happy customers
Locust wood is great but you have to be careful! Those hotter burning woods can overheat your wood stove. Most people think your wood stove can operate at any temperature. The manufacturer does have temp limits on wood stoves and running them too hot can damage the metal. If I have hotter (or higher BTU) wood, I mix it with lower BTU wood so my wood stove does not overheat. Just a friendly tip!
Hey Chris... I can't thank you enough for all the info I have learned from you... I really appreciate it a lot! All of the things I am learning from you now is going to be very help full in the near future!
My father was a salesman #1 thing he always said was just as easy to be early as late, I hate being late for anything and likewise hate others being late. When 💩happens as it does occur from time to time communicate be it customers, friends or family!
I did firewood for over 20 years sold my processor that I had for 13 years so I am out of the firewood business now and you are on point with what you are saying. I like talking to new customers and explaining to them what they can get from me as I did a lot of custom wood they could get wood 29 inches long with big wedges or small wedges and down to 12 inches long and the same. My customers liked I would do the wood just for them and I had many older customers that need that small wedge and many times it was the women keeping the fire going and I needed to keep her happy. I was mainly for heat and some campfire I did not do fireplace wood as that need to be dry and I sold all my firewood as wet I cut and split as the orders came in the only wood I stored is the 3 or 4 tri-axles loads I had in the yard. You are giving some great advice to someone new in the firewood business stay safe and keep all your fingers
Don't tell the cell phone company, the cable company, insurance company....... They are more than happy to $hit on long term customers and spend millions getting new customers.
So true. I’m dealing with an insurance company now for the sudden sky rocket jump in premiums. “Blame the hurricanes” they keep saying. Sick of communism.
Spectrum constantly with the bill going up. If you are a new customer though you get the same service as me for $50-60 less per month. Every year when the bill goes up I have to call and bitch and I end up with a better price probably not as good as if I was a new customer though. They should be kissing my ass I have been a customer for over 20 years and I own 3 houses and have their service at all 3. Paying for it at all 3 even though I can only be at one house at a time lol. If you do the seasonal disconnect which I have done in houses I am not at when it comes back on the price skyrockets. I know I did it a couple summers ago at my house since I was at another house for the summer. With the seasonal disconnect its like $15 a month. The bill before the disconnect was right around $200. When it came back on it was $350. Same internet, same cable but bill went up $150 a month after being on seasonal disconnect for a few months.
Nice talk Chris. Common sense seems to be not so common anymore. Something as simple as answering phone calls seems to be outdated, but texting usually gets immediate results. I like to actually talk to people. GNI
My parents had a wood furnace in the house I grew up in. We sawed and split wood every fall and winter (thru the winter). I thought I knew quite a bit about chainsaws, splitting and gathering wood, turns out did not know half as much as I thought until I started watching this channel.......😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
That was some good common sense inforation that you gave for free.Keep up the great work. When I grow up, I want to be like Chris. No, just kidding .I have already have a small firewood yard and am at the point where I need to grow or get out.I am working on growing if some things work out.
Michigan here. In my area just north of Detroit I've only been able to find firewood delivery that is mixed hardwood. It seems that the wood is really just tree service wood but it burns just fine for the fireplace. I found a huge firewood processing / storage yard that is behind a landscaping supply store that really sells to the trades I have used them twice over the last five years and I think they must supply for a lot of the local firewood delivery services. Guess it is good to know that "city wood" is being used for firewood rather than just being turned into wood chips.
you are so right Chris, customer service is the number one important thing ANY business should do and time keeping is the number one most important. indeed it is common sense but indeed common sense is scarce these days. speaking of which, I'm going to send you some images this afternoon of my wood stores. hope they will be useful for your planned videos... i can only apologise that they are late. good morning to you and yours
I was taught as a young lad that "You should never cook over Pine". Due to the tar I later found out. Even roasting a marshmallow is not good.. Just a little very basic common sense tidbit. Great show..
Most people around here also prefer oak. Myself, I would rather burn white oak than red oak just because the BTUs off of red Oak is so much hotter and my house gets too warm. It’s a different story altogether in the dead of winter give me the more BTUs. The only locust I’ve ever dealt with is honey Locust. The thorns on those are brutal when cutting them up. I would rather have logs that were cut in the summer when they still had sap in them. They are so hard in the winter. It’s like a different animal. But either way that burns extremely hot. I have even burned cedar before only because I didn’t get enough that year to get me to warmer weather. I’ve heard people complain about Sycamore, but I tend to not have much trouble with it. I tried to save all my hickory for cooking. Ash is fine but we don’t have a lot around here and what we have is dying pretty fast.
Locust, Locust, Locust. Have lots of it in PA. Lots of blow downs, standing dead trees. Yes it stinks, extremely slimey. Boy does it 🔥 hot. It's a pain to split. Makes excellent hot coals for cooking over. I prefer the 6 to 8 imch diameter stuff, don't have to split it.😊
It's always a sound and often overlooked business growth strategy to operate in a manner where your customer retention rate is higher than your competitors. This is not sexy or innovative, but will achieve stunning results long term. I would be cautious/consertive assessing the positive value of your looks. I am envious that your passion, hobby now a business you love produces a profit, mine all cost and have negative cash flows. Ray
A lot of times you can get a discount if you pay an individual cash because they're not going to claim that on their taxes. But I agree if I would always prefer cash because it can't bounce lol.
Your first two points about communication are the keys for me. I have cut the cord on quite a few contractor relationships because of this. I don't care how wonderful or skilled someone is supposed to be.... If you don't respect my time by responding to my communication, I will not deal with you.
@@InTheWoodyard I have to admit seems the friends are more likely to burn you. I had a close friend he asked me for 20 dollars. I asked him what for. he said he wanted to buy a bag of wacky if you know what I mean. I told him no. Now if he said to buy food for his child or to buy diapers I would have said yes. I was working on a house next to mine and told the girl I was with to order us Pizza because I was going to be working late and didn't want to cook. Yes I do all the cooking too. Anyways I have a jar that sits in the corner on the wall that had 50 dollars in it. I leave it there just incase I am not around then the girl I am with is in need of money. This close friend went in my house to say hi to the girl I am dating and she came out and said the Pizza will be here in a few minutes how do you want me to pay. I said use the money in the jar. She then said there is no money in the jar. I said there better be I put 60 dollars in there. Then the friend said he I have to go but it was nice seeing you. I went in the house and the money was gone. I called the so called friend up and told him point blank never stop by again if you do you will never leave. He said I am sorry I just wanted a baggie . I said well you lost a friend over that 60 dollars and if I see you I promise you wont like our meeting.
Don't tell Tony, i almost bought a Husqy the other day lol. And you are correct, common sense can be a rare thing. Still waiting on my maple sugaring wood delivery 😂👍🪓🚚. Just bought a brand new evaporator 👍

yup
I love the discussions because of the common sense approach. You’re so right on the lack of it in society as a whole. Thanks, Chris.
2 things we need more of common sense and communication.

Don't you mean computer smart??? Haaaa!!!
I burn all wood it puts off heat it's going in my wood stove period.

That does happen!!
Morning guys
Hello!
CHRIS, you are so secretive. Why are we just finding this out now?
I share almost everything about firewood here...what secrets???
Hello everyone
Hello Stanley!
Your voice is only coming thru on the right side. It isn't in stereo. Only the music is in stereo.
Yup, my videos got recorded in mono for a while by mistake...my bad.
I have let people charge but back then people were of their word and I never once was stiffed I can't say that would be the same today.
Yup, I got burned a few times....never again.

I don't have customers! But my wife wants me to STOP doing firewood! She doesn't like it anymore!
Maybe give her a choice...you cut it all or she cuts it all????
Well said Professor!
Thanks!
