This has to be one of the best videos I have ever seen, informative and pleasurable with the laymans terms Andy puts across. Excellent and will be purchasing.
Thanks for this inspiring tutorial Andy! I'm 68 and live in a mountainous area...very tough to actually pedal uphill at my age and condition. But if I can add a kit like this to my bike and then ride the ridges by pedaling...a new world opens up. I can't really understand all the technical details...but I think our local bike shop could help me with the conversion. Thanks for sharing. I'm excited! :)
Have just completed a conversion of this exact bike, trek marlin 5, 29er, Fitted a 1500w hubmotor, controller and display look the same, 48V 21ah triangle battery, power is great, 65kph on flat fully charged, 40kph up an incline, 30km range without pedalling, 60km range or so depending how much I help it by pedalling, And the bike handles great, although braking has been affected as it is now quite heavy,
I bought the kit from CSC bikes on eBay, the battery I purchased from Etario store on Aliexpress as it was cheaper, if I was doing it again I would get maybe a 1000w or 750w as I think they would be powerful enough, On full throttle with the 1500w motor the display shows over 2500w consumption, not good for range when you do that,
Dang, what a great vid. I've been looking at getting back on my bike but I'm hampered by a back / hip condition which greatly limits the power in my leg. Looks like I might have found a solution. Thanks greatly Andy.
Hi Andy, really fun video can I just offer up a couple of things, I know you mentioned the torque arms, make sure that people use them when they have aluminium frames and don't even go for a test ride before they fit them, steel frames should be fine but on aluminium you will crack them very easily if you don't use a torque arm, also if people want a front wheel motor on suspension forks you shouldn't even turn the wheel without a torque arm, someone I knew snapped his dropouts at standstill both sides when fitted to a suspension fork with no torque arms. Look at the kits provided by luna cycles, they use similar kits to you but they get the suppliers to fit really nice quick disconnect connectors to the power and the hall wires, I thought the days of Chinese ebike suppliers supplying those naff connectors were long gone but it seems not, you want the disconnect wires near the rear axle otherwise changing out the wheel if someone gets a puncture will be a nightmare with that screw in block? in the short term you could use 30A Anderson powerpole connectors, I have been using them for 10 years on my 40,000 mile ebike, I use a simple cheap 5 pin din audio jack for the hall sensors, little things like that make all the difference I think the 5 pin din was 50p from Maplins. This is a direct drive motor, can you test the hill climbing ability, I would be interested to know how it fares, I have been on the ebiking scene since 2000 and did dabble with supply all those years ago with Mark Higgon from Team Hybrid way back in 2006 and it was fun but it can be a PITA when stuff starts going wrong especially the batteries, dont go investing all your savings in to it mate, Im glad I kept it just as a hobby, i wish you the best of luck.

A safety note: The brake disc bolts should only be tightened to the specified torque, which isn't high, only around 6.2Nm, about as tight as you can get with a normal Torx key without hurting your fingers - it should be a fingers action, not hauling on them with whole hand. Alternatively, just spend £20 on a torque wrench and set the torque with that, it's the right tool for the job (a battery drill isn't). If you "do them up really tight" you risk stripping the threads out of the alloy hub, as they're only tiny little bolts. This could just cause damage to wiring, or could cause a crash. The important bit is the thread locker (Loctite 243 or similar) - medium strength Loctite 243 would probably stop the bolts backing out even if you just did them up finger-tight. Do them up to the right torque with thread-locker and it will be fine. It doesn't have to be actual Loctite, there are other brands available from bike shops or Amazon, or you can buy bolts with it already in place. Most appropriate medium strength thread lockers are blue, don't be tempted to use the green "high strength" Loctite thinking it's "better" as it can stick the hub threads so well to the bolt that the aluminium strips out when you undo the bolts. Threadlockers are anaerobic glues, they set in the absence of air, so when you do the bolts up make sure you're ready to do them all up (star pattern) and complete the job reasonably quickly.

Mike Pell hi, to be honest the kit arrived in a couple of days from modds ebike and had everything you needed other than the battery , which I had ordered separately from Germany and took just over a week to arrive. With a busy work schedule it’s been on the back burner for a bit ,but I’ve mounted the battery , fitted display and throttle and then realized that the connection between battery and controller were completely different . New connections arrived today ,along with a more heavy duty tyre from schwalbe, but unfortunately I’m feeling under the weather and had a coved test today at stansted and waiting on the results, so for now it’s just all sat there ready to be assembled, but I’m just too unwell to crack on. It’s a 1500w kit with a 48v battery so I’m expecting some serious speed.......we shall see.
Now we're talking!! What a wicked bike!! It's really weird coz I just bought a frame (hard tail carbon 29er) and wanted to rig up a motor on it. Thank God you've been there and done it as I want to buy an electric motor for mine and I can come to you for it. Keep up the great work.
I have the same setup on my mtnb but mounted the controller on the underside of the frame with a junction box for all the wires. Found the controller was overheating in the bag and it looks much better underneath. Great vids m8 😎
When undoing bolts you know have loctite on the threads some gentle heat will make it easy and save breaking your torx set. Ask me how I know, I've used this trick for years and never fails

What you mean you can’t connect it? Does it physically plug in? Are the connectors the same and are the positive and negative around the right way? (polarity)
@@andykirby im thinking mabey to cut off the the battery connectors and replace them with bullet connectors in order to connect the batter to the controller??
ikea boy yes that would be my first thought too. It sounds the the extra part is just some sort of mechanism to stop the plugs coming apart, 4mm bullets or Anderson connectors will be fine.
Hi all, I'm in the process of converting my Cube Ltd sl 29er to an ebike with this kit, wheel is finally in, just waiting on the battery to arrive from Germany. I will give my impressions of the bike when completed and list all the problems I've encountered whilst doing this conversion so it may help those of you who are thinking of purchasing one.👍
Hi I like the idea of a road legal kit, I would prefer not to have a thumb throttle just rider assistance. Can the level of power assistance be regulated from the display screen? I am looking to replicate the latest batch of factory E Bikes, like the Ribble Se which has 3 fixed levels of power assistance.
Hi Andy. Great video. Looking to do a conversion myself. Want to ask a question that doesn't appear to have been covered anywhere else... How easy would it be to replace the rear inner-tube if you're out and about and get a puncture?
Just came by your comment, and as a fellow conversion kit rider myself, it sucks :) Ive had 500w in front for about two years now, and you need a wrench and Allen key to undo the nuts on the axle and the torque arm. It can be done by turning your bike upside down in the field, but you would always need the tools. For me, ive bought a fake bottle, like the toolbox ones, and keep the tools in there. Also invest in some durable tires like the 'glassproof' Schwalbe marathon plus type. They weigh slightly more, but since youre on an ebike, this is a non issue. My tire change PR is about 2 mins, but your mileage may vary.
Looking at getting this kit to fit on my Carrera Vengeance bike. I have 8 cogs at the back & this kit comes with a 7 cassette, so can I just reuse my 8 cassette with this kit or what do I need to do to fit it to my bike properly??
Hi Andy, first off - bike looks great! I have similar hub motor, the wire going into the motor has a gap to fit through the axle so its on outside of frame rather than between frame and disc/motor, yours looked like it might get snagged? unless i've done mine incorrectly...either way awesome build !
I noticed that he never disconnected the battery 🔋 while he was assembling all of the electrical systems. People don’t ever do that at your home this guy is way to confident
How have you found this setup over time. I'm thinking of doing the same with the same bike or do you have a recommendation for another bike to convert in the same price range
It’s working great and is a joy to ride, I’ve changed the front forks to proper rockshox air shocks now as the standard ones are a bit like pogo sticks! check the video a few after this one where I show the mods I did.
@@andykirby you never said how much the kit was and where you bought it from that's amazing how you guys don't mention the things that people wanna know the most amazing!
I love the mullet look with that Ebike Conversion. You just sold me on this conversion for my mtb. WIth my dorpper post and horn (attached to the head light) and rear taillight remote, I think I'm going to have to swap my handlebars out or use shorter grips to fit everything in the cockpit.
That's about what my 1500w on 26" does too. I'm in the process of upping to 72v so it'll be fun to see what the result of that will be.. Apart from BANG !! So if you read somewhere that Peterborough has an Urban Terrorist then you'll know I welded the connections wrong !!
@@0utcastAussie cool, will you update the controller? Some 48V controllers can take 72V it all depends on the voltage rating of the electrolytic capacitors and/or the voltage rails for the controller circuits.
I was planning on buying the exact same bike to convert it (that is why I found this video). Would the hub motor with the 29 inch wheel and the MTX rim not fit this frame? Is the rim too wide? How about the 27.5 inch variant? I am not sure which size to choose as I do not know if anything over 26 would fit even though the original wheel is 29 inch. If anyone could help with this question I would appreciate it :) Thanks

I've never known of E-BIKE conversion kits.. So this is a way cool video. I'd like to ask do they make *CHEAPER* FANS for work sites with that don't have electricity, or for family reunions, gatherings at parks or cabins.. Or cheaper conversion kits to turn a gas mower to push to start
They'd have to prove it first. Link any stories of that actually happening. I'll await the very short, even non existent list of links of convictions....
Just checked gov website: "These electric bikes are known as ‘electrically assisted pedal cycles’ (EAPCs). I have your 500w kit plugged everything in and it terns on but throttle wont work or the peddle assist the wheel spins when I hold the power button on but over then that the motor doesn’t move
I've just got done building your kit and must say it's absolutely mental how quick the 1500w picks up speed. I pussied out at 26mph and have now limited it to 15 til I hit some trails. Thank you sooo much I do have a quick question though. Those brake sensors for hydrylic... Where do they go? Did you show us in one of your videos?
Hi Ryan,Ive bben looking at the same kit and wondering about delivery time from china and whether im guna get stung for tax extra. How did it work out for you? Cheers
@@peterfinch7984 I had to pay 50 gpb customs surcharge for UPS expedited, It took a little over 2 weeks for the hub and kit to arrive which IMO is really good for china mail, I ordered my battery elsewhere cos i wanted a pannier version (amazon Junstar eu) which arrived 2 days behind the kit. I wouldnt recommend a pannier battery as the weight is all on the back wheel which takes some getting used to, get the frame battery.
Very nice build, simple and powerful with a clean look. I'm amazed at how well the mismatched wheel sizes worked out. Definitely want to put some torque arms on there. I have 1500 watts to rear hub motor (with regen), and it wore the dropouts even on my steel frame, to the point where the axle spun out. It took a long time for it to happen, but I wish I had just put them on. Now I have a scrap frame.
Thanks! Yes I didn’t stress the importance of torque arms in my video, I did actually install it before the main test run as you are correct, due to the high forces from the rear hub it. An easily wreck the frame or worse it could fail with you on it!
Love this idea. Saw a video of a couple of lads making one a while back. They used Tupperware and sprayed it black to contain parts. Looked great tbh. Lol.
I’ve got the EXACT same Trek Marlin 5 and I’m doing the conversion on mine as soon as the parts arrive. I have hydraulic disc brakes obviously and I don’t want to put any other breaks on my bike. I’m assuming that I won’t hurt the battery or motor or anything else by not hooking up the brakes that come with the kit and just using my brakes. Just asking so I dont screw anything up. This is my first time building a ebike but it looks straight forward so I shouldn’t have any real issues.
Hey Andy, how did you fit brake calipers on rotor? on marlin 5 2021, in bikesop, I was told your kit cant fit with the calipers on this bike, because of the location of calipers (in 2018 is was located on top of chain tube, in 2019+ its located in the midlle of 2 chain tubes). On video I can see that you have this 2019+ vesion and clearly you first removed them, then installed the motor, but I didnt saw how did you fit brakes on rotor. In bikeshop I was told that calipers cant be aligned with rotor because 2019+ calipers is unable to move to diferent positions to fit rotor.
I have just buy on of this kit my self. But having the problem with the new back tire can't get stuck to the frame. Every time i'm lifting the bike, the tire will fall of... Talking about the problem as you have 4.40 min ind you're video. How did you solved the problem?
I just got my bike on the charger for the first time this year. I need to get my brake lights worked out soon, and I am considering changing the fork or rebuilding it along with the head tube cartridge and front brakes. The hope brakes don't seem to bite like I would like, but I haven't tried to tune them much. I really am thinking I want to do a low power setup that is bikeable for work commute. I am leaning towards a middrive for that, and may use my gt zaskar frame or start from scratch.
Please Advice... Is this can fit any bike ..? I have Voodoo 27.5 wheel back size, would I be able to install the whole kit thing on it ..? And which are the powerful and faster ones ..?
I have a 2004 26” tire specialized small frame epic bike -I’m 5’4”. There’s not a lot of room in the triangle frame so which kit would I need? My wife has the larger frame so which would I need for that bike as well?

It's really weird coz I just bought a frame (hard tail carbon 29er) and wanted to rig up a motor on it.
Thank God you've been there and done it as I want to buy an electric motor for mine and I can come to you for it.
Keep up the great work.
I have the same setup on my mtnb but mounted the controller on the underside of the frame with a junction box for all the wires. Found the controller was overheating in the bag and it looks much better underneath. Great vids m8 😎
Under an hour my ass, just getting the rear wheel to fit right takes that long.
John Doe-plorable well then you don’t know what your doing
Then use a front wheel electric motor to simplify the process.
is there any way to add a wire to the controller that allows me to connect a headlight ?
When undoing bolts you know have loctite on the threads some gentle heat will make it easy and save breaking your torx set. Ask me how I know, I've used this trick for years and never fails
Could you do it in place of the FRONT Wheel??
Yes you can
Hey man you've got the bars upsidedown.😂😂
He rlly doesnt
@@kerrywhitehead2640 yes he does aha
@@kerrywhitehead2640 he really does
He’s setting them flat that’s why they look weird
The guy converts bikes ffs 😂
Kerrys right on this occasion 🤙🏼 your bars ent just for holding onto they have different settings for each individual rider
Look it up on TH-cam 👊🏼
@@tro552 No he has them on upside down!
Just because he converts bikes to electric ones does not make him a bike mechanic...
My motor makes a noise, vibrates, but dosn't spin. Any ideas? I can spin it with my hand but not the electricity.
Check your phase wires (three big wires going from the controller to the motor) also check other connections between motor and controller.
@@andykirby Ok, thank you. I will check.
Nice System 1, I have one too :) Am also looking to do what you've done here with the e bike, so thanks for the great vid !
I just ordered your kit tonight from your website can’t wait to install it
Can’t wait to see how many miles she can do buddy.. nice kit 👌🏼
I have a launa cycle shark battery 48v but I can't connect it to my controller can someone please tell me what am I doing wrong or should I buy another controller😈😠😢
What you mean you can’t connect it? Does it physically plug in? Are the connectors the same and are the positive and negative around the right way? (polarity)
@@andykirby the battery has red and black connectors but the controller has them with a mini silver pole like feature with a green sleeve
@@andykirby thank you so much☺
Hi all,
I'm in the process of converting my Cube Ltd sl 29er to an ebike with this kit, wheel is finally in, just waiting on the battery to arrive from Germany.
I will give my impressions of the bike when completed and list all the problems I've encountered whilst doing this conversion so it may help those of you who are thinking of purchasing one.👍
How long did it take to ship/ despatch? I ordered one a few days ago
Hi, The wheel kit came within 2 weeks but the battery took about a month.
@@jasonlocke154 Oh OK, did you receive any sort of Tracking information from them? It's been 2 weeks and I haven't been updated at all
@@shahahmed6255 mine came via ups expedited . Took a little over 2 weeks packed perfectly.
Yeh China mail sucks but its worth the wait to save money.
Yes you can use just pedal assist and there are 5 power levels selectable via the display.
Thanks for that what is the range for the battery that is in the kit?
I’m concerned about the import duty that’s in the small print. How much extra is it going to cost to get it to me?
About an arm, a leg and one of your testies.
I got stung for £38 on the motor and speedo, and nothing on the battery.
I thought exactly the same thing. Did you end up buying it? How much extra did it add?
Is it worth buying the conversion kit? How much can you save by converting a normal bike rather than buying an e-bike??
The performance and functionality of this is much more than you'll get from a ready made ebike.
Just bought the kit I have the exact same bike thank you for making this video!!! So excited
Have u received the kit? Just wondering before buying
spencer shone yes took a month. Works great but I ordered 26 tire and should’ve got 29. Other than that it works great
Nice one very simple and informative video. You have loads of enthusiasm and knowledge.
It's a lot of fun building an ebike...why the rush?
Fair point but if some people need a quick form of electric transport to commute this is showing it really isn’t difficult.
Looking at getting this kit to fit on my Carrera Vengeance bike. I have 8 cogs at the back & this kit comes with a 7 cassette, so can I just reuse my 8 cassette with this kit or what do I need to do to fit it to my bike properly??
Hi Andy,
first off - bike looks great!
You can turn the battery off and its isolated. Its wise to check with a meter first to make sure voltage is not present.
almost finish paying my bike in layaway lol cant wait to get it!!
my ebike just suddenly cut off and I don't how to turn it back on. could it be a controller issue?
Great video!
Seriously considering one of these kits. Are there wheel sizes options? Ie 700c or 27.5"
Why are your gear upside down?
great video Andy, keep it coming... I'm subscribing
Thanks! And welcome😁
@@andykirby how much range do you get off the battery in your kit
@@andykirby
I just fitted your kit and it’s working all ok. What is the correct settings for full throttle in the parameters?
How heavy is a bike wheel with a motor on it
How have you found this setup over time.
@@grangergreenback7152 - Its in the description.
@@sumran_domguy I made that comment before the video ended, then right after I went back and looked at the video again to see the price
I love the mullet look with that Ebike Conversion. You just sold me on this conversion for my mtb. WIth my dorpper post and horn (attached to the head light) and rear taillight remote, I think I'm going to have to swap my handlebars out or use shorter grips to fit everything in the cockpit.
Nice one! So what was the top speed?
I clocked About 35mph
That's about what my 1500w on 26" does too. I'm in the process of upping to 72v so it'll be fun to see what the result of that will be.. Apart from BANG !! So if you read somewhere that Peterborough has an Urban Terrorist then you'll know I welded the connections wrong !!
@@0utcastAussie cool, will you update the controller? Some 48V controllers can take 72V it all depends on the voltage rating of the electrolytic capacitors and/or the voltage rails for the controller circuits.
wow. 35 mph is fast on a bike. borderline scary.
If anyone could help with this question I would appreciate it :)
Thanks

A really lean mean fast machine this E Bike MAKE AN E BIKE IN UNDER AN
HOUR, is amazing well done you.Just a bit bothered about the exposed electric cables by the pedals?
.... its called insulation
This is the Best Deal Ever

Hi Andy, but here in birningham if get stopped by police on an ev push bike you braking the law for no insurance
mot its bloody madness
They'd have to prove it first. Link any stories of that actually happening. I'll await the very short, even non existent list of links of convictions....
@radio tech Regret not going there years ago when I had the chance. This place is an Orwellian nightmare
Just checked gov website: "These electric bikes are known as ‘electrically assisted pedal cycles’ (EAPCs). You do not need a licence to ride one and it does not need to be registered, taxed or insured." see - www.gov.uk/electric-bike-rules
So if Brummie plods stop you, refer them to the above and tell 'em to do one
i think if you have pedals you are ok, if you have fixed foot peggs you will have problems with plod as it is not a EAPCs
As long as the maximum power output isn't above 250 watts.
bro im on a mission to build one regards from california

hi please tell me the correct rate of kit that $399.99 and KirbEbike 1500W-2000W Ebike Kit (motor+controller kit) NO BATTERY also
Awwww no, I fixed the display the wrong way round🤪🤪
My mountain bike is 27.5” and all ebike kits are 26” would that work with my frame or what can I do please need options or guide for my situation
We can supply you a 27.5 inch kit, see here: www.cloudsto.com/ebikes/kirbebike-conv-kits/kirbebike-1500w-2000w-ebike-kit-inc-ion-plus-58v-17ah-battery-457-detail.html you can select the wheel size from the drop down menu.
You’ve installed the handlebars the wrong way up, the shifters should be underslung and if you don’t flip the brake levers over you will loose your brakes!!!!!
Doh!!! I wondered why the brakes were the other way around so I switched them😂 let’s just say I’m more of an electrics guy😄
andy kirby glad you spotted it 👍 have you been doing much with the amateur radio stuff recently?
Incredibly useful video. Thanks mate.
Dang, that whole thing looks complicated, plus a lot of bike shops in my area don't service Ebikes.
its easier than it looks ,trust me ,just match the colour of wires mount the things provided
You need service for a bike? Man, you're a lost cause! The guy in the video is an amateur level mechanic, and he's doing pretty well! You have to start somewhere if you're interested!
I have your 500w kit plugged everything in and it terns on but throttle wont work or the peddle assist the wheel spins when I hold the power button on but over then that the motor doesn’t move
And the power supply just flash’s no redding on it but no error codes
The kits are nice but with bike thefts so hi now I'd rather buy a heavy motorcycle style electric one at least that's alot harder to steal.
What models are you talking about?
I wouldnt recommend a pannier battery as the weight is all on the back wheel which takes some getting used to, get the frame battery.
also worth noting the packaging was impeccable, cant say the same for other kits.
@@ryan6764 Thanks Ryan,much appreciated.
Best to leave controller out of bag especially in the summer
1 hour if I had the money :(
Love this idea. Saw a video of a couple of lads making one a while back. They used Tupperware and sprayed it black to contain parts. Looked great tbh. Lol.
16:54 you made a battery there
I’ve got the EXACT same Trek Marlin 5 and I’m doing the conversion on mine as soon as the parts arrive.
12:25 that was dope
Can you use a less powerful battery than required with a 48v 1000w front wheel...?
I have a custom e bike top speed up to 50 mhp and 70 mil hour so really so nice and fast bike
Guys have to be go custome ebike online uk
Where you get the stuff for that
How you get the brake lever to work because marlin 5 is hydraulic and the one the provide is cable

Awesome video and thanks for sharing your tips ,and a beautiful bike 👍💚
I wonder if you can translate the video to English?!
What kind of performance can i expect with a 48v 14ah battery
I thought the intro was some kind of pimp my ride intro
Hey Andy,
how did you fit brake calipers on rotor? on marlin 5 2021, in bikesop, I was told your kit cant fit with the calipers on this bike, because of the location of calipers (in 2018 is was located on top of chain tube, in 2019+ its located in the midlle of 2 chain tubes). On video I can see that you have this 2019+ vesion and clearly you first removed them, then installed the motor, but I didnt saw how did you fit brakes on rotor. In bikeshop I was told that calipers cant be aligned with rotor because 2019+ calipers is unable to move to diferent positions to fit rotor.
finally a video for us noobs lol
Awesome! Hope it helps!
@@andykirby Andy what's your thought on a 500w motor v 1500w. Would the 500w motor be better for cruising at speeds of say 25-30mph?

Can you use any battery on a kirb e-bike kit?
I have just buy on of this kit my self. But having the problem with the new back tire can't get stuck to the frame. Every time i'm lifting the bike, the tire will fall of... Talking about the problem as you have 4.40 min ind you're video. How did you solved the problem?
Love the vid although why are the handlebars upside down? The shifter triggers are meant to be under the bars
Is the screen easily removed on the handle bars?
how do you make sure the components in that bag or the battery are at least a little waterproof???

Every mountain biker IC who converts their bike to a switch kit by basically takes it down a relatively tame Fire Road or Gravel Road have you taken this down anything rough does the kit pop off
I gota ask, what's with the odd size wheel? Why not get the correct size or lace up the original wheel? Is it just a time saving thing?
