When you’re hauling a load to a unknown destination and you get off the beaten path, man it’s such a relief to see industrial areas with other trucks. You may not know exactly where you are but if other trucks got in and out of there, so can I.

yep. was saying that to a friend the other day. I pull a van, so usually not too bad, but some of these factories in downtown areas with old neighborhoods around them get sketchy. I usually try to call the shipper or receiver and get turn by turn directions in and out, but these days, good luck getting someone to answer the phone.

I took it many times but still goes crazy scare the crap out of you😊 in 3 yrs warranty they never fixed it. I know a young guy with a 2024 Peterbilt he has more sensors going crazy warning lights blinking. It's a shame. Bunch of overpriced junk. Boy that video brought back some not so nice memories. Back when I drove there was no such thing as GPS or even cell phones. You made your call from a spider infested phone booth, or you had your CB set. Relying on instructions from some one on the CB set sometimes just got ya worse off. I use to hate not knowing where I was going. I would get so up set. To this day I still hate not knowing where I am going. For me it’s the worst feeling ever. Getting lost in a car is no big deal but when your driving 70 ft you can get yourself in a pile of poop if your not watching. Great video showing part of trucking most don’t show. When almost every new pick up is the first time you being there getting lost is done so easily. It’s pretty hard to get lost on a dedicated run. Anywho FSC another great video showing a side of trucking most don’t post. You have yourself a great and a safe day. Happy trails and happy motoring.

Imagine a new driver, freaked out on that cars behavior tried the crossing, got stuck and caused another toxic train wreck. People do panic over others reactions.

I had to back up nearly 4 miles to get to where I started, but half way back, a farmer let me turn around on his property, and he gave me good directions to the road on the other side of that low bridge.

Australian Truckie here, subbed. I can tell you my experience with trains. We were (about a dozen of us) were contracted to can't grain to Port.
Now they had 1 train a day doing the same. So I actually got out & spoke with the train driver.
This is because we Truck Drivers knew there was a serious problem with a set of signals. Which meant they did not work at all. So no warming of any trains coming.
I wanted to know of the Train Drivers actually knew this & it had been seriously documented? It had been.
So the Train Driver actually told me, all Drivers that work the line, know that set are not working. Not only, they step up out of the seat & prepare to stop the train for us.
The reason why the line or signals couldn't be fixed was that they would have to close the highway to do it, as the actual line was cracked. That was causing the signal failure.

As a former train conductor if you get stuck call the number on the aluminum crossing bungalow instead of 911. The dispatcher will have trains slowing down prepared to stop short of that crossing in about 2 minutes. It’s the luck of the draw still, because you could get stuck right when the crossing activates and a freight train is headed straight at you at 50-60 mph. Gotta evacuate the cab ASAP.

This is a great video showing the reality of doing this sort of work. When I was new to the industry I was under the naive assumption the roads would be designed for trucks if the city/county planners knew trucks would be a possibility. Boy was I wrong, I dont drive semis anymore because I decided to get my passenger endorsement and get experience on a straight truck after what I saw training at Schneider national. Even in a straight truck ive managed to high center the rear axel ubolts on a curb once when I intentionally tried to gently roll the curb to make a tight turn. Maybe one day Ill get back into a big rig to make the big bucks $. That red ford @ 16:20 did that just to be a d**k he knew exactly what was going on and tried to make you out as the a hole anyways. Mad respect for what you do and even more for your patience, I see you always double checking in the cab views and you clearly are a pro!

Tie down chains do not need a quarter ton of tension in them.
    TL:DR
ur likely gonna lose the load in a crash
    Details:
The Angel Nut on a certain helicopter is the sole chunk of metal responsible for holding the main rotor hub on the machine.
The entire weight of the helicopter and cargo is literally hanging on this nut.
If the nut is cranked down, it preloads the tension in the rotor shaft, and reduces the load capacity.
That it why it is tightened "hand tight" and then another plate is placed on top of it to simply cover it, and the bolts holding the cover plate are safety wired to prevent anything turning without someone wanting it to.
So, when you crank down with everything you've got on those chains, you're tensioning them, and reducing their load capacity such that they will easier snap in the events of aggressive accelerations (the physics definition of acceleration, not just mashing on the go pedal).

Was fast turn around every time I finished a job. I would evac/cage brakes so that I could back in under trailer ,raise 5th wheel , and pull into shop without getting out of cab.The new hires could never figure out how I was faster than them. Oh to be young again...
Hydro fifth wheel would work for those crossings. Have to have a reliable locking system, though.

The maximum legal length for a trailer is 53 feet. (You may have noticed that on van trailers driving down the road). If Steve's trailer is 50 feet, then he has 3 feet of leeway for the overhanging of the load. If it's longer than 53 feet or wider than the road, or the total weight is over 80,000 lbs (tractor, trailer and load) then he would have go through the whole rigamarole for Oversize Permits

Usually, freight trains rip tractor trailers to pieces but what does happen sometimes is the debris will roll the rail over in front of the train causing a derailment. Thats what happened recently with that bridge girder a few months ago. The beam fell on the tracks in front of the train and rolled one rail over.

Pretty easy, especially in a low boy (it doesn't take much, it's usually always the landing gear/support legs getting hung up on raised tracks, especially ones that are raised with sharp drops at both ends.

Beyond possibly wrecking your truck, the cost to remove it from getting hung up on RR tracks, is the possible death and injuries to nearby residents, in other vehicles, persons on the train, causing a derailment shutting down the tracks or causing a dangerous spill (think of East Palestine, OH). Less than a mile from me (Garfield, NJ) a lowboy truck and trailer got hung up on a humped up RR crossing. A commuter train hit it making a mess. Fortunately no one got killed, few were on the train (it was at an off-peak time) but it shut down that line for the commuter trains and freight trains for a day.

There are always guys like the one in that red Explorer who make life miserable.
They don't care about anyone else, never mind a big truck on a narrow road.
A little common courtesy, and some situational awareness, go a long way.
If you see a big truck, cut the driver some slack, and be polite. His day is hard
    enough.

Thaz what I hate about some railroad crossings where the street goes up & goes back down which causes lowboy trailers like yours to get hung up & stuck on the tracks. You did the right thing by not taking a chance & try to cross it.

If you get bellied out, knock off the leveling valve links on the tractor & the trailer & shove them all the way up. If you are on a live railroad track, don't fuck with unbolting them, get your tire knocker or whatever is handy & rip the link off the axle end. When you're ready to travel again just tie it off to hold a level until you can get it fixed.

When cars did that to me I just pulled the parking brake and there we sat. Some barely capable of driving a car tried being baby boss telling me what to do, It was fun handing them a broken key fob like it was real leading to a blank stare "uh..". What, you can't do it? Then leave it to someone who can while you move along to where you belong which isn't here. I'm getting paid so we can sit here all day. Questions?
Never heard a word after that. Never saw them again. Everyone around seemingly got the message loud and clear just by looking at us thinking "I'm also not taking that offer! C yah!" 🤣

i feel if you reading the road correct, you can clearly see if you might ground out and at that point you reverse / turnaround if in any doubt do not risk it. knowing your rig and reading the road well and you not have an issue. its the ones not paying attention then it too late when they get caught up

We have the same thing and we use it for hauling big logs coming out of tight spaces where we can't get out log truck's in. Ours is a Mack and it haul's ass dam good. It pulls a trailer also to set more logs on it. And the driver connect's the trailer when he's finished stocking up on log's. That's why we don't use lowboy's anymore due to railroad crossing,'s like that. Years ago a guy was driving and he got hung up (dragging the trailer) and he was begging for help. I quickly jumped in the wrecker and hightailed it over there and quickly connected to the front of the dump truck and while I was getting in the wrecker here comes the train. I told the guy to bleeping floor the $#@_ out of his dumptruck and he was. I floored it and we was crawling and got it off the tracks within like 30 seconds before the train came through. The dispatcher of the train company was trying to get a hold of the train conductor and guess what they was doing??? They was bleeping 😴😴😴😴 they was quickly fired. I was like hell yeah (lawsuit) we reached out to the guy who got hung up on the tracks and he was like hell yeah. He was very thankful for getting him out. Allot of people was posting videos of the incident and they was like go TJ go TJ go and was cheering when we cleared the tracks. The police officers was like wait a minute where's the bleeping railroad crossing signs at. Apparently druggies removed them for scrap metal to sell. The guy stated that he will never go this way again. He said that he was coming up and seen the tracks and he was like where is the railroad crossing signs at. And it was to late he got hung up. Driver's and Hot Shot Load drivers was like wow watching video's of it. The person who I am co-owner with was like shocked seeing it (video) the police department and sheriff's department was watching for the druggies and they caught them removing the signs and they was hit with so much charges they will never see the greener side of the prison again. They admitted stealing the signs earlier that day. Lucky the red SUV moved outta ur way and didn't ne a Karen or a @#$_head (that's what my wife Jessie told me to say)

I as a fellow driver, and equipment operator, have never figured out why it is so damn hard for engineers to design flat crossings. ok so just had 200 yds of fill and flatten it. Also if you had a detach trailer, you could, just raise you neck and airbags which is what I would do.

Back up hammer down and do the lowboy slide. That’s where a non ground bearing lowboy comes in handy. Lift it and most of the time you have enough clearance

Isn't it fun in an area you haven't been before, low bridges and weight limited roads etc. Then when reversing from no access locations light vehicle drivers drive up to the back door and blow their horn. 4 way flashers and in my case reversing lights are on but it's not obvious to them the truck is reversing. Go figure! Travel safe Steve.

That happens all the time especially down there in Georgia.
That's where a lot of them tend to get hung up on with low parking lots and flatbeds and step decks doesn't take much.
The ones you really see those Steve where they screw up big-time r1 it literally says no trucks on this Crossing at all and it's clearly marked with a slash through it.
And then you see some dry box getting mowed over by the train and a big destruction scene why because it's a hike round Crossing and it says no trucks but lot of them can't read follow the GPS isn't that's what happens
The good thing for you when do you have to back away from that Crossing that intersection was a stop I had a situation like that years ago I had to call the local cops out I didn't trust backing across because it was such a heavily-traveled county Road and I said I'm not got nobody that wants to help stop the traffic so I could back out so if you guys don't mind coming out or I'll just block your road
