I won't (I will) comment on the beauty of the video as a whole as so many have already rightly done in the comments. But I will take the time to make sure you know how beautiful your "View From My Hotel Room" picture is. It has a small but certain Hopper sensibility but its your proximity to the plane of the table and how its curves play with the chair curve and the railing lines as they all play with the open expanse behind that is spectacular. Not to mention its perfect palette and that miniscule gap between ocean and railing. Bravo.

I have shot many street and landscape cityscape photography that mimics Hopper’s style without consciously trying to follow him. I liked Hopper images as i discover his paintings during my visits of museums. My style are saturated colors graphic geometric with strong contrast in my compositions. Thanks for the video.

Hello Tatiana. I loved this video, the music you chose, the editing: Excellent work. I immersed myself in the work of Ed Hopper (I had never delved into it) It is beautiful what he did, especially that dreamlike atmosphere that he gave to all the scenes. It's like it gives the feeling of being on another plane of reality, observing this one and capturing it with that signature that hasn't changed over time. PS: I missed the finger snap. But the "Peace..." made up for it.

It is one thing to have a personal vision and quite another to be able to express that vision in a consistent, uniquely recognizable manner - what may be called a 'personal style.' The latter is relatively rare and distinguishes the greats from the rest.

I've been falling out of photography for the last year or so (ironically due to pursuing an MA in the subject, I'm continuing it in a different city), and videos like yours help remind me why I got into photography, and what I know deep down I can do with a camera, thank you for your inspirational content

Josephine Hopper said about her husband: "Sometimes talking to Eddie is just like dropping a stone in a well, except that it doesn't thump when it hits bottom."
I remember seeing Nighthawks in Chicago and I love Nighthawks. That painting and pretty much Hopper’s painting pretty much inspired me to do photography.
Great video. Thanks. Hopper’s work, which I love, has two main overarching characteristics to me; humility of subjects, and restraint in interpretation by the painter. Simplicity by which he paints the “outer layer” you mentioned allows us to dive quickly and easily into the inner layers. For that reason I always feel peaceful looking at his work, and it’s always a calming experience. I can only hope I can get to that level with photography one day, which by the way you seem to have reached already. The photos you’ve sprinkled in this video are just spectacular.

Thanks for this hommage to E. Hopper. 😉 One thing that connects all of Hopper's paintings is that they are perfectly true in perspective. I guess this is what, as a photographer, a single prime lens would give you. There is no abstraction in that dimension. So he had the choice of texture (even with luminousity, Hopper remained very conservative) and colour. And, as the images you included in your video show, that's where he excelled. As you pointed out, removing some aspects of the "immediate" perception can make the image timeless - and more impactful. (For lack of a better word)

Thank you for an excellent essay, so well produced and insightful. As a keen photographer, Hopper's painting technique is an ongoing inspiration to me. With the blocks of light and shade, colour and simplicity, his work is exemplary in it's ability to remove the superfluous and concentrate the viewer on the subject matter. The Precisionist movement in America is my favourite painting form due to it's correlation to photography. Maybe you could produce further essays featuring Charles Demuth, Paul Strand and particularly Charles Sheeler?
NO WAY! I know Hopper's work for a year now, but only yesterday went back to see if I can find his book to buy in good condition, crazy timing Tatiana!
I have studied Edward Hopper's work for some years. I admire his ability to capture a fraction of time on canvas and to do it with a sense of mystery. But I have to admit that I cannot concentrate on his work for very long at a time. It depresses me too much. His characters seem to have a sense of loss and emptiness and not belonging to their present environment . Even his architecture imparts that feeling. Like a structure that has been set down from another dimension and has no relationship to its surroundings. On the other hand, I have always admired Nighthawks. Maybe because he did it in the same year as my birth. Even though it creates the same feeling of emptiness I have always wanted to try to recreate it with my photography. :)
Enjoyed your presentation and appreciate how much hard work went into creating it. Here and there I disagreed with some of your statements, but your underlying attitude toward exploration is inspiring. Loved your use of the found footage: brilliant!
I totally understand what you mean in this episode. I've been on a journey of discovery of my photographic style for a few years and I think I am only now beginning to know what it is. However there's still some way to go before I am satisfied with my work and feel like I have "arrived". The path is not obvious nor easy but very rewarding nonetheless. They had a exhibit of his work at the Virginia museum of find arts in Richmond Virginia USA and alone with his work they showed the work of others the one I like was William Egglestone red ceiling
Thank you Tatiana for this excellent video essay. I saw a Jack Vettriano print in a gallery window once (The Drifter) and the person I was with said he must have been influenced by Hopper. I then fell down the Hopper rabbit hole and managed to see the exhibition in London (Tate, 2004?). Fantastic artist… so much going on, often in sparse or even empty scenes. I wonder if Tom Waits’ Nighthawks at the Diner is a love letter, certainly could be. Looking forward to ho you exposé next!

I've just started reading a book called lonely city and the first chapter focus a lot on how hoppers art is often linked to loneliness and isolation through composition and subject. Despite this hopper didn't like that people associated his work with loneliness as he felt like "it was played out"
That is true! That’s why I said what I said in the video about it being a sort of work that ponders on life and existentialism, he felt his work was reduced all the time to that word and I can see how that can be frustrating! Looking forward to read that book ✨

"Stay true to yourself" doesn't really work, because that is exactly what the marketing machine is telling me to do. Instead, I rather want to stay true to something beyond myself. Possibly something that cannot easily be commodified. Maybe then authenticity is just a consequence of what one does.
You didn't say you were not related but I'll give you a pass on the nepotism. Seriously though I love this series. All the notes on the sketches are really interesting as people get hung up about "post processing".
If any modern artist could be said to have had sex regularly with color, it was Edward Hopper. Hopper embraced color. Mr. Hopper must have had access to a camera and B&W film, did he ever shoot B&W?

I really enjoyed this video, as Edward Hopper is my favorite American artist! Your animation of those Hopper scenes was mesmerizing - how was that done?! And is there a chance that T. Hopper is related to E. Hopper?? Thank you for this excellent and illuminating work.
I've just started reading a book called lonely city and the first chapter focus a lot on how hoppers art is often linked to loneliness and isolation through composition and subject. Despite this hopper didn't like that people associated his work with loneliness as he felt like "it was played out"
That is true! That’s why I said what I said in the video about it being a sort of work that ponders on life and existentialism, he felt his work was reduced all the time to that word and I can see how that can be frustrating! Looking forward to read that book ✨

"Stay true to yourself" doesn't really work, because that is exactly what the marketing machine is telling me to do. Instead, I rather want to stay true to something beyond myself. Possibly something that cannot easily be commodified. Maybe then authenticity is just a consequence of what one does.
You didn't say you were not related but I'll give you a pass on the nepotism. Seriously though I love this series. All the notes on the sketches are really interesting as people get hung up about "post processing".

If any modern artist could be said to have had sex regularly with color, it was Edward Hopper. Hopper embraced color. Mr. Hopper must have had access to a camera and B&W film, did he ever shoot B&W?
