Rajshahi is a divisional city of about 97 square kilometers located on the banks of Padma. The rise of this city in the middle of the seventeenth century. Earlier the headquarters of this district was Natore. In 1825 it was shifted from Natore to Rajshahi. Being a center of silk production and a city on the banks of the Padma River, Rajshahi easily attracted the attention of English merchants.
The Dutch, French, and East India companies successively set up their trading posts in this city. The Dutch silk factory building was known as Barakuthi. During the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, the European Volunteer Force was headquartered at Barakuthi.
In the late 19th century, Barakuthi bought the Medinipur zamindar from the British. After the partition of the country in 1947, it was converted into a warehouse of the Civil Supplies Department. When the University of Rajshahi was established in 1953, the Big Kuthi became the Vice Chancellor's residence and office.
The major centers of the city are Shahebazar, Ranibazar, Reshampatti, Ghoramara, Hatemkhana, Dargapara, Kumarpara, Boalia etc. Rajshahi city was elevated to Rajshahi Municipality in 1876 and City Corporation in 1991.
The second largest university in Bangladesh is located next to the city of Rajshahi. Everyone would like to visit the campus surrounded by its shade.
