      I love this car, and would be very tempted to buy one for our next car if they were still being converted. The BMW Mini has lost the plot completely.

      Wasn't there supposed to be a parking light demonstration?
      I haven't really seen parking lights before, and I'm not sure what they are used for. If you could please explain this, I would really appreciate it.

      To clarify-I saw them turn on, but I don't know how they would be used in practice, what the purpose is, or anything like that.

    Imagine if your daily commute is 20 miles of twisty B-roads in this, with lively engine and exhaust noises and with this brilliant finish. I would be extremely happy.

      Yeah, I have a Ford XR6 (Think Betty with a bit more style and punch) and I was seriously disappointed when I put it on a twisty mountain road and tried to push it! Compared to my long lost Mini, it was a nightmare!

      For five years I had a 20-mile commute, each way, between Henlow and the AC Delco factory in Dunstable. I drove an ex-works 1071 Mini Cooper S along mostly narrow country lanes, with a couple of short stretches of A road and B road thrown in. It was an absolute blast! There were a few places where I would exceed 90 mph, traffic permitting, and after a year or so I knew every passing place and likely gate from where a farmer might back out pulling a trailer full of straw bales. And they did.
      I've had the good fortune to own and drive some fantastic cars over the years, but no commute could ever be as exhilarating as that one. The job paid well, but the company sucked. I was actually sorry to be recruited and move away, but only until my 'commuting' took me travelling all over the world in different cars in multiple countries.
      Occasionally I wonder what that particular cross-country commute would be like today. Probably awful, I suspect. Too many slow cars with even slower drivers clogging up some great lanes we once used for car club night rallys.

      I learned to drive in an original series Mini (sliding windows, cable door opener, huge door pockets). I’ve loved ‘em ever since and still remember the reg. JOK 8E
      The modern ‘Mini’ is taking the mick, swollen+bloated - bigger than a family-size car from that era!

      A lot of the older cars were like that. Modern cars have a generic sameness about them that makes it hard to tell them apart.

    Brings back sooooo many memories! The rorty exhaust, whine of the gearbox , it’s all there. Used to have a 1380cc, 12G940 head , twin SUs , and a 731 cam. Acceleration, incredible. You mentioned Downton Engineering, there was an eccentric character if ever there was one. Daniel Richmond knew how to tune cars though. His students were Gordon Spice who went on to race 3.0 Capris, Ralph Broad from Broadspeed Engineering, Jan Odur who became Janspeed Engineering , David Vizard who wrote various Mini tuning books , what a line up !

    • @Roger.Coleman1949
      @Roger.Coleman1949 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Martin , I gather Daniel's wife , April , was the formidable businesswoman and smelt ' money ' when his talents in engine tuning became obviously apparent .Issigonis , not an advocate of making his cars go faster , eventually had to give in under pressure from George Harriman of BMC , to adopt faster models and after a drink or three at the local pub that Daniel frequented , BMC Special Tuning came about.

    • @mikerichards9196
      @mikerichards9196 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I had a 1380 Avonbar engine in a Metro back in the late 80s; lightened and balanced, tuftrided crank/flywheel, omega pistons, gas-flowed, big valve head, with a 1¾ su on a swanneck and RC40 based exhaust. My that thing could shift, yet below about 3500 revs it was as docile as any shopping trolley.
      I always wanted to try one in a mini but never managed it. I had it rebuilt by what turned out to be a cowboy and it blew up while still running in 😢

    The mini is said to be one of the most modified cars ever. I always loved the Wood and Pickett mini's as well as Crayfords as well as the more recent David Brown specials. The fact you could spec a humble mini as such a luxury item is so amazing. I think someone even had one with wicker doors (Peter Sellars possibly). They are just a cool little car for everyone. I'm lucky enough to own a 1969 mini Jem kit car and it basically uses mini mechanicals in a fibreglass coupe body and I love it for its bonkersness (is that even a word 🙂) thanks for sharing such a fabulous car with us all she's a beauty!!

    I remember him saying that the design was a shrunken mk10 Jaguar dash with assistance from Smith's with the shrunken gauges. He also told me that BL would only supply complete cars as W&P would have preferred a shell and running gear.

    Marvellous review Ian of a 1970s icon .Wood & Pickett aftermarket Mini accessories were a must for every ' serious ' Mini owner , espeially their full width front and rear chrome ' nudge ' bars with little round rubber ' doughnut ' protective buffers , the rears were like huge spectacles protecting the rear lamps and boot lid. Also , the polished wiper aerofoils as on this beautiful car, ' to stop lift at speed ' !.I'm recommisioning my recently acquired 1961 Austin Seven Mini and busy resourcing all those period extras.

    Oh, these sounds - deep joy! Had an Innocenti 1300 Cooper with balanced motor, LCB, RC40, etc. in the '90s. What a great little beast that was - did 110mph paced by a calibrated poilice car Omega we had, but at 6,000+rpm! Negative camber rear trailing arms and 165/70/SR10 Dunlop SP Sports meant it handled as well - much better than the '90s Cooper rehash that was deeply disappionting on its 12" wheels...
    A good Mini is ike a driveable Jack Russell Terrier...

    1970s amd 17 I worked in a petrol station at weekends. A wealthy customer had a W&P Mini and a XJ6 Coupe in matching shades of Yellow with Black Vinyl Roofs. You had to be careful where you stood when his boyfriend came in for Petrol.

    Say what you like about the glorious engine note of the Ferrari V-12… a well-sorted A-series makes some amazing music of its own. I’d read about the Wood and Pickett Minis, and it was a real treat to see and hear this one in action. Great episode!

    Much as Mini's are brilliant the thought of driving one on our pot holed roads these days would fill me with dread. Oh to be young again !

    G'day to you ! Brilliant, love it, back in the late 60s myself and a couple of Mates bought a second hand Cooper S from the NSW Police, it was Light Blue of course but great fun to drive!

    My dad had a Mini Traveler with the wooden frame from 1960s but bought it in the very early 70s , if ever it was raining or deep puddles on road he just wouldn’t even bother to drive it 😂, many a day in winter / autumn making him late for work, lovely little car but really hopeless in wet weather.

    Wasn't there another luxury conversion for Minis back in the 70's? Oyler is one name that comes to mind
