It's an official game function; but it does reduce your thinking and the number of moves to achieve the same result; I believe the rules on allowing it or not do depend on the competition, some accept others consider it cheating.
You still have to mark the flags for where you think the mines are or clicking on the numbers has no effect. Misplacing a flag and trying to clear it by clicking on the number will detonate the mine in the spot you missed. So it works both ways.
