    Nice review!! A cheap pair of test leads will run $5, so you are really only paying a fiver for a nice DMM. I love my HT118A but it's big and heavy when testing anything overhead. It looks like the bag would hold my HT118A too. I love everything about this.

    Wow - this is a real breakout for a $10 cheapo-! - a permanent on backlight with a simple continuous "on" like weve been screaming for, as well as an audible beep in the diode range as well as a killer continuity range. Ive never seen an audible diode range in a ten dollar cheapo, or in most far more expensive meters for that matter. Add good accuracy, a nice bold display and uses AAA batteries instead of a 9volt. This has to be the best ten dollar meter ive seen yet for solid functionality, I also noticed there was no hunting the measurement settled right down. I really cant fault a ten dollar meter for this level of input protection either, c'mon its only ten bucks-!! Its ridiculous they dont make the audible diode range standard in all meters, if they can do it in a ten dollar meter they can do it in ANY meter. This little guy is one of the best values available for such a stupid low price, its a Cheapo winner-!!

    • @KeepOnTesting
      @KeepOnTesting  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely a fantastic value..HABOTEST didn't get greedy either and kept the price rock bottom which is also really refreshing! Can you imagine what a joy it is to have a Backlight that doesn't turn off after 15 seconds..absolutely should be industry standard just like the audible diode function you mentioned.! 😀
      I think HABOTEST has a real winner on their hands.! A multimeter such as the Mastech MS830L must be quaking in its boots right about now!

    Another observation, it doesnt even look like the usual ten dollar meter - not that its of any value but the meter is proof a ten dollar meter does not have to look or work like junk. Someone at Hobotest is engineering decent value into their low end products, and thats very hard to find these days at this price.

      @@KeepOnTesting how the audible diode test behaves when the leads is shorted? does it give a short beep also or a continuous beep like in a continuity test? my Richmeters 114 gives a short beep in any conditions. it will be more useful if it gives a continuous beep when the leads is shorted and short beep when it is in diode forward voltages range and above, so we can verify if there's a short in a circuit or not just by listen to what kind of beep we got. 😀

    Really have to say my favorite meter at the moment is my UniT 17BPro-! I should add after the fact that the 17B+ is my fav. meter in the higher price range, but that 118A is really tough to beat for features and functionality in its price range, so id have to say its about my fav in the lower price range - still waiting on my 108 just to see what $10 can actually offer, seems like a lowest buck no brainer bargain. I cant believe it has the audible diode beep, many $$$$ meters do not have this very useful function.

    Looks like a cheap meter to tinker with low volrage circuits (less than 30v). However, having seen the damage mains voltages and current can cause during "accidents" I would have liked to see a stronger caution regarding the "minimal" input protection. In any case, I wouldn't risk my vision, appendages, or life using such a meter on any high voltage / high current circuits.

    • @KeepOnTesting
      @KeepOnTesting  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roger that.. as always if you're playing in high ⚡ voltage territory use a properly rated multimeter and be careful. This is fine for household mains.

    • @dadsview4025
      @dadsview4025 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Measurements near the electrical service entrance of mains into your house would be considered a CAT 4 situation. This meter claims CAT 3 protection (though I wouldn't bet my life on that). The issue is not the voltage but the potential energy available at the measurement point. Thanks for the reviews and the content on your channel. This excellent video by John Ward explains CAT ratings and why it's important. th-cam.com/video/LTGs6GXB8io/w-d-xo.html

      @@dadsview4025 I hear you 100% Thx for the link. I'm pretty familiar with CAT however I'll still recommend for household use on CAT II Single-phase receptacle connected loads. I wouldn't change the Electrical Panel in my house with it but that's not its intended purpose.

    I have a question unrelated to the video. In one of your older reviews you used DSO-Shell pocket (portable) oscilloscope to test a square wave generator in PDM-711. Are portable oscilloscopes any good? Should a person who's learning electronics even consider them or is it better to save those $20-30 and look for used oscilloscopes from the start?
    I won't be able to afford anything half-decent for $250+ for some time. I know it's not as simple as choosing a multimeter but an experienced opinion will help me narrow my research. Thank you in advance.

    • @KeepOnTesting
      @KeepOnTesting  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you just want ti see a signal than a portable Oscilloscope can be useful the problem is most are overpriced and underwhelming for the features offered. Stay tubed though.. as next month I'll be reviewing a model which hopefully will address that issue and offer some real "scooe" like functionality at a great price..

    Well, one CON you missed or ignored is that it doesn't measure AC current amps and miliamps. And yes I understand it can not be expected in this price segment for a high quality multimeter. I liked this Cheap-O multimeter very much due to its build quality and accuracy, but I didn't like the minimal input protection. I request you to make modifications to remove that current sensing resistor and replace it with a best current shunt and if possible some extra MOV's n PTC's and make a video on it, which would be awesome! This multimeter can last really long, I'm impressed with it. As for this contest I choose the Habotest HT118A as my Favourite CHEAP-O Multimeter 🥰 that I have came to know from your channel.

    • @KeepOnTesting
      @KeepOnTesting  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think HABOTEST did so many things right on this multimeter that I could forgive the AC Amps..I didn't forget it but I opted to negage it as a necessary evil since they packed so many other important features into the 108L.
      Interesting comment about the input protection and only tine will tell if the masses agree. I'm ok with it at such a CHEAP-O price point.. although more robust protection would have been nice at least we have a fused multimeter.

  • @numerical_error
    @numerical_error 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think in my region Aneng an8004 is quite popular in that price range. Still it's slightly more expensive and has all the usual problems with LEDs, continuity and backlight. For $10 HT108L is a great deal. It does what little it can very good.
    Also I wanted to thank you for the top ten cheap-o list. I just noticed it on the previous video.
    As of now it's hard to compete with the HABOTEST HT118A. You can find it for $30 or even less. I like UNI-T's design and overall UT89XD is a terrific meter especially for LED testing. If HT118A couldn't do temperature and didn't cost less, UT89XD could give it a fight. RICHMETERS RM406B is also a solid choice, but doesn't do temperature and is the most expensive out of these three.
    I'll be the weird one in the room and chose UNI-T 890C as my favourite meter for now. Not because it's great, but it does everything I need and costs $20 or less. Unfortunately I found this channel too late and bought UT136B+, which is not that bad at all. But watching hundreds of multimiter reviews really got me into electronics. I would be nice to have a temperature sensor to finally calibrate my soldering equipment properly. I hope to see many more reviews from you to help me chose a second meter next year.

      @@KeepOnTesting Oh. I forgot to add that I wish to opt out of the giveaway. My current UNI-T is enough for household use. Also learning more fundamental electronics on an autoranging unit is easier. I hope this nice cheapo will go to someone who really needs it.
      Yesterday I finished watching the older videos. Last couple of weeks were definitely a dive into a world of multimeters. So many interesting models reviewed. The dual channel TES PROVA903 looked handy. I've never seen multimeters with the push buttons like SEARS 82386. Keysight U1231A has changed my mind on unappealing brownish-orange carrot-juice-box-like cover color (let's not point the finger on VICTOR).
