    We have a medevelfestival every year in Visby . There are plenty of movies on TH-cam.

    The wall around Visby is just around a smaller area of the modern-day town of Visby. The population of Visby is only around 25,000 but it grows during the summer because of all tourism. Visby (and the whole island of Gotland) is a popular tourist spot for other Swedes.

    About 60 000 people lives on the island. And every year about 1 million tourists visit Gotland. My parents bought a summer house on the island 1980. Been there almost every summer since. + I did my military service in Visby, P18 (1986). The island is approx 200 kilometers long and 40 km at its widest.

    The town I live in started with settlements at least as far back as in the viking age, with the oldest still standing in-use structure being a cathedral from the 13th century.
    There's a great resource in Sweden for locating historical sites around you "Fornsök". Open it up in pretty much any inhabited place and you'll find hundreds if not thousands of known historical finds, many that are left in place and can be visited.

    Sigtuna is usually considered Sweden's oldest city that still exists as a city, which was established at the end of the 9th century by the Swedish king Erik Segersäll. However, even earlier cities or villages have existed but do not remain - e.g. "Birka" is the most famous and was the predecessor of Sigtuna.

    I grew up five minute's walk from a 13th century church, and if I went the opposite direction, 2-3,000-year old carvings in the rocks by early bronze age settlers. So, ah, yeah. There's a lot of fun history in Sweden. Heck, one of my ancestors lived in the forest near where I live now, in a cave under a rock where he was a blacksmith to people passing by. He didn't even have to do that. 😁

    • @snorpenbass4196
      @snorpenbass4196 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, if you want to visit old places, there's the tiny trade city of Eketorp, an actual Viking-era settlement on the island neighboring Gotland, Öland. Eketorp is basically constantly under excavation. There's also one other settlement that was found more recently, that had the first real evidence of trade routes to Rome before the Viking era.

  • @kajsan760
    @kajsan760 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    How old a town is could be a tricky question. Many Swedish towns have been settlements and trading centers since the stone age, but of course they weren't towns then. In the middle ages and for some centuries on, most kinds of trade could only legally be done in cities, for tax reasons, and the king decided which places were allowed to call themselves cities. So most towns know the date and year the king granted them city privileges.
    One of the reasons Visby has so many beautiful medieval buildings is that it used to be the richest town in Sweden, because of all the trade. One way to show off your riches in the middle ages was to fund a church, that is why Visby has a ridiculous amount of medieval churches, even though only one of them is still in use as a church.

    There are foundations of large forts and large burial mounds since 1700 BC but no writings preserved from that time. When Christianity took hold of Sweden, large book fires were organized where writings about old times and old gods were burned.

    I dont know if youve done this before but if not, you should react to Swedish rap/drill. Theres a big rap scene with many artists that english people usually like. The biggest rappers are Einar(rip), Yasin, 23, Sickan, Dizzy, 2m, Thrife, and more but there are also other great not so famous rappers like G1ocatore, Boogie Dinero, Sticky and more. You should also react to Kid Nerds video "The deadly beef inside a small Swedish town" to get a better understanding. Some songs you should start off with are:
    Sticky - Vänd igen
    Einar - Sätter dom på plats
    Juice, Einar - Härifrån
    Dizzy - Bara om ni visste
    Yasin - Chicago
    23 - Scorpio
    G1ocatore - Mannequins
    Thrife - This is Sweden
    Sickan - Intro
    2m - Tour de France
    Nummeruno - Lumpen
    If you like it ill send more songs, there are many
