I had the same problem with the 5000. The reel jammed and after some time a piece of rubber fell out. I haven't put it on yet. Since then, the reel has been operating smoothly and without any problems. Greetings from Poland!
Hi Den, I don't buy such expensive rolls anymore. I had a Browning Black Magic. I gave these away to children. I only use Ryobi rolls for feeding. The price-performance ratio is still right. They run like our VW Beetle. They can't be broken. I pay €60 - €65 for that. The Browning roll cost twice as much. The paint is still stable after years without any damage. For predator fishing I only use Quantum free-spool reels. I had the best experience there. Or the Penn Slammer Freeliners.
Here in the UK there are so many brands of reel available and a tremendous variety of prices. It's mind boggling. I personally don't spend £100 on a reel, more like up to £50 but been very pleased with my choices. My favourite reel is a little Mitchell 300x which I bought in Canada and have actually caught some big salmon with it. I still use it regularly. Just keeps on going!
I agree, valid rant! The price is reasonable, to consider when the time comes. Would be sooooo good if all brands have line release clips like MAP does, this is something we coarse anglers require for practical use as we usually cast clipped up...
Great to hear a review from a long-time user as you can give a more personalised review. I won 3 Daiwa SS2600 Whisker Reels some time back and I have been very happy with them. Only issue I had was the bail arm line feed got lost when a screw came out (found the screw and the washer so 3d printed 5 more) . BTW went out with my old school friends of 50+ years and I used the" Dens Method" with great success only failure was one of the guru inserts snapped on one fish :(
Good review Den. Matrix have a new £200 match reel just launched which I’m tempted to try, think it would make a good video and to compare to my Shimano Aero XRs which are fantastic reels, both in 4000 size, I’m not as heavy duty in terms of distance and weight of feeders as you!
Thanks Paul. I wondered if matrix were going to bring out another reel. I would be very interested to see your review, if you buy one. I probably wouldn't pay £200 for a reel though.
Mate for an extra 70 dollars you can get the Shimano long cast baitrunners 5500 size from a local shop (if you can find the deals) and they have a 10yr guarantee. They are absolutely amazing for the fishing we are doing. Maybe a little heavier but they make cranking carp in easy
Hi Richard. I did look at those reels recently, but in the end I decided that I didn't need a heavier more expensive reel. I also never use the Baitrunner function, so I'm happy to stick with the Matrix Horizon reels which do exactly what I need. Anyway, most of the time you never draw a peg with any fish in it, so a cheap reel would do you.🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍
Informative vid. I wonder whether Fox came out with their Horizon rods before Matrix came out with their Horizon reels, or vice versa? And if a lawsuit arose from it?

See the reasons above in the comments, there can be good, I fell on a very bad
Toys for the boys (and occasional girl) - but is the Matrix 4000 worth twice the price of the MAP 4000 which of course comes with the fabulous ACS system? Cheers Den, keep up the good work.
Den im guessing we are of a similar age i remember the days when most match or pleasure anglers had a mitchell match which seemed to cover most style's of fishing . There are too many reels on the market these days stick with what work's thats my view.
Hello Den, you refer to failure by manufacturers to standardise reel sizes, I feel the same applies to manufacturers of hooks, sizes of which can vary significantly between brands.

Hi Ralf. If you can buy reels which do the job you need them for at a good price, then I agree with you mate. Go for it.😁😁👍👍
Thankyou that problem you talked about with the reel happened to me so I will check the reel the way you did.
GREAT VID MATE I agree with you on manufacturers making sizes of reels clearer keep vids coming
Thanks Dave.😁😁👍👍

I'm pretty much of the same opinion Spark. My original MAP Carptek FD 400 reels originally cost me £50 too. I now have 5 of them.

Yep. Thanks Nafeez.😁😁👍👍

Nice to hear from you Phill. Tight lines mate.

@@FishingwithDen 😂😂 so true. But I need the extra distance provided to cast into your peg where the fish are
@@richardtuxford1812 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍Good point.

Interesting point Brian.
i am a matrix fan some of these have had a bad rap in the past on different forums but they seem to be going strong nice video as always Den
Thanks mate. I just tell it like it is and for me they work great.😁😁👍👍

Hi Clive. If I had to opt for only one of them, it would be the MAP
Reel size are pretty much like the threads standards...they are set in place to make things easier...it is just a matter of which you prefer 😂
well explained Den !👍🐟🐟🐟👋
Thanks Danny.

I well remember the Mitchell Match David. I loved that finger dab bale arm.

I agree Christopher. And just for good measure, I find line diameters and breaking strains to be extremely confusing too.
Me too!@@FishingwithDen
