Greeting from Verbena, Alabama! Good job on the video. I like your equipment, its not about new fancy stuff, its about enjoying what your doing and being productive. Keep it up young man, America needs guys like you.
Being productive helps a lot if things will start....and not chasing jumper cables every day ! Just because its old equipment dont mean things cant be maintained !
cool as cool , just came across your site and really enjoy . You are a REAL farmer . Im in Va. with 13 black beef cows a few goats , miniature donkeys and a couple trail horses . Just a weekend farmer , my main occupation is that of a fence contractor . Will keep watching and support . Fred
Thanks I m a farmall or nothing fellar brought back alot memories.Made my day . I spent a lot days out there .Health bad now about all can do is feed horses now .
Too much ground speed. Drop the 14 back a gear. When the corn is balling up at the top of the gathering chains, and it cascading back down the clean corn elevator like that, you're pushing it too hard. That's also causing a lot of shelling loss when it's grinding in the head. Like seeing that the older equipment run. I picked a lot of ear corn in my younger days.
@@knappfarms Probably just trying to help you out. I'm pretty young and wouldn't be too far if I didn't hear (not always listening, that's part of maturity) all the old timers who helped me along the way.
We had a Case VAC that was a lot like that little Farmall A. It really liked to pull as well, even though it wasn't a very big unit. Ours had a Woods belly mower under it as well, so it got to do a lot of the grass mowing.
We have 2 farmall A tractors this one and then the other one has a woods belly mower under it so it gets to do some mowing from time to time like you said they sure do like to pull
It's got Patena. It's been about 60 years since i have seen ear corn picked, and I believe There were still some of the New Idea equipment being used. Enjoyed seeing it in action again.
Just a comment on battery draining, I’ve had alternators with internal regulators put small drains on batteries. I think the cause may be in the diodes allowing current to flow back, with the price of alternators I just replaced them. I would check them by removing wires from alternator and see if it then drained after sitting a few days. Good luck with it.
usually if the diode is bad the gen light will be on all the time....the best way to track down a draw is unhook the positive batt cable, hook up an amp meter between the pos cable and the battery....see how much of a draw you have.....then you just start pulling fuses until the meter drops to 0...that will tell you exactly where the problem is
and the easiest way to test the alternator ...while engine is running....turn the lights on to make sure it has a load on it......stick a wrench to the back of it..if it sticks the alt is good
Looks a lot like the old stuff I grew up with. In some ways was probably more dependable than the newer fancy gear they have now. At least You .can repair it without much hasell
I worked on that for 2 years. The problem was the main battery cable on the alternator wasn't always making contact. I replaced the end on the cable it's been working good .
Wow 4 rows and 1/3 full. that is good yield for the corn. have you ever thought about a combine to harvest the corn? or a 4 row picker? ( combine removes the corn from the cob, so that might not be so good for the feed ) it must take a lot of time to harvest with the 2 row picker. great job. keep it up!
Your maintenance program sucks. I also pick with a new idea two row wide. It looks like new even though the last one made was back in 1976. I have a Farmall 300 very well kept and a agco allis well kept. There is no pride in making payments but you can do a better job in your up keep.
@tomshull-wb2bb you realize I bought this for $200 and it looked worst then it does now so does my maintenance program suck I work with what I have and can afford I didn’t inherit stuff I can only try and get better as I ho
WELL, I AGREE WITH THE PREVIOUS POST. TO MUCH GROUND SPEED FOR THE UNIT. THE CORN SHOULD NOT BALL UP IN THE FEEDER, SHOULD NOT PILE UP ON THE HUSKING BED, SHOULD NOT PILE UP IN THE CLEAN GRAIN ELEVATOR. SPEED IS NOT EVERYTHING. YOU HAVE TO GIVE THE MACHINE TIME TO DO ITS JOB. TO START WITH WHEN THE MACHINE WAS NEW THE CORN WAS NOT THAT GOOD AS FAR AS BUSHELS TO THE ACRE. BY OVERLOADING THE MACHINE IS WHY THE UNIT IS SHELLING SO BAD. ALSO, THE UNIT IS NOCKING DOWN A LOT OF CORN IN FRONT OF THE SNAPPING ROLLERS ONTO THE GROUND. YOU CAN SEE THE EARS HITTING THE GROUND. ALSO, BY OVERLOADING THE MACHINE IS PROBABLY THE REASON THE GATHERING CHAIN JUMPED OFF THE SPROCKET. SPEED IS NOT EVERYTHING. THE MACHINE NEEDS TIME TO DO ITS JOB. NEXT IS THE WAY THAT YOU USED THE A FARMALL TO PULL THAT WAGON FULL OF CORN. REALLY NOT A BIG ENOUGH TRACTOR FOR THE JOB. ALSO, YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT THE TRANSMISSON IS NOT SYNCRONIZED AND IS REALLY NOT MADE TO SHIFT ON THE GO LIKE YOU DID. YOU KEEP THAT UP THE WAY YOU DID ON THE VIDEO YOU'LL EITHER BUST A TOOTH ON A GEAR OR THE GEAR COMPLETELY. IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A BIT OF ADVICE FROM AN OLD TIMER, SLOW DOWN AND SMELL THE ROSES. I HAVE WORKED WITH THIS OLDER EQUIPMENT FOR OVER 40 YEARS. THE OLD SAYINGS, I HAVE HAD FOR YEARS IS SLOW AND SAFE MAKES SINSE. FASTER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER. IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES, WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE. IN OTHER WORDS, DON'T EXPECT TO GET IT DONE IN ONE DAY. GLAD TO SEE THAT YOU HAVE THE INTREST IN DOING IT THE OLD WAY. KEEP UP THE HERITAGE YOUNG MAN
You could go in debt and buy all new shiny equipment but then you would have a big payment. Farmer today have to make do with what you got. They also have to be good mechanics. People don’t realize all the land was farmed with small Farmalls back in the day.
It’s not a need it’s the extra tractor that wasn’t being used when we started ear corn and it has a cab unlike all the others for those cold wet windy day
When my Dad got a 460 about 1960 I remember he used it for almost everything when the H would easily have done the job, I finally realized it probably had to do with the live power and power steering.
@@knappfarms take an OHM meter and put between your battery terminal on the alternator and on your alternator wire and see if you have a draw that could be coming from the dash you might have a bad wire
In this video probably only 200 bushel still have maybe 350-400 to go we put up 14-1500 bushel in the crib and then have a couple hundred acres we combine
But also if your gonna criticize leave more information to back it up what is the proper ground speed to rpm ratio you can’t just leave a blanket statement with no factual backing and expect everyone to go with it
The feeder house has husk and stalk in it because it’s so dry it the it floats above the heavier corn that is going up into the husking beds and that corn at the end of the husking bed will be there at 1 mph vs 100 mph it’s because the rollers are slightly out of adjustment but we leave it so it won’t jam and we don’t mind grinding a little husk in our feed
Know that one uses what they have but a 1486 on a little dinky 2row new idea picker seems an awful waste and you traveling way to fast,,, when it piles up like that at bottom of elevator, you actually have lots of spillage,,,more WASTE

If tomorrow never comes it doesn’t really matter if I was picking at 20 miles an hour and broke everything either
Badass equipment getting the job done with style! I could watch ear corn picking all day.
love old eguip still going strong.
If your slow down a little bit and let the picker do it job you wouldn`t have all that trash in the wagon
We don’t mind the trash just a little extra filler for the cattle this corn wasn’t being stored ground the same day
Farming has come along ways.Alot slower but alot easier to fix .
You are pulling that picker in too high of a gear. Use Low range, third gear..
It does look too fast.
Check out my newest video
yea your going way to fast your knocking down 50 percent of that corn
I like your style and type of farming! but I will say, you are a fool for driving so fast while picking corn
Interesting
You could go in debt and buy all new shiny equipment but then you would have a big payment. Farmer today have to make do with what you got. They also have to be good mechanics. People don’t realize all the land was farmed with small Farmalls back in the day.
Do you pick a lot of non ear corn
Not a lot just a couple hundred acres
Driving wsy too fast. Lots of corn falling on the ground.
Thanks
Slow down hot rod!
Got shit to do 😂
Looks like he is going a bit too fast?
It works! 👍
Picking way too fast, no wonder it sheared the bolt
Had nothing to do with it a tensioner loosened up and let a gathering chain off was about a 10 minute fix
Your driving way to fast funny gathering chains don't break noticed u didn't grease or oil chains
Spray lube at the beginning of the harvest as well as grease I noticed you worry too much about other peoples operations
Grounds to wet and the stalks are too dry. Gotta love picking corn in the winter.
Yup definitely not the best conditions for it but only a little left to go
I don’t understand the need for that much HP, I would use a 50hp tractor to pick corn and had plenty of hp. I have used a IH H and it worked great.
It’s not a need it’s the extra tractor that wasn’t being used when we started ear corn and it has a cab unlike all the others for those cold wet windy day

maybe because he is picking in road gear
😂 road gear I don’t know anyone that goes down the road at 6 mph
Maybe 130 bushels would be my guess.
570 RPM's on the motor not down the PTO.
To damm fast old buddy
Got shit to do lol
Slow down give her time to clean better and you won’t get as much shelling.
We don’t mind the shelling it’s all just getting ground up the same day
I picked corn that way with a ford 5000.....3 wagons an had 3 round corn cribs to put corn in
👌
🤙Red Power!
Your voltage regulator is sticking in the alternator that's why it's running your battery's down
Will have to look into that we just put a new alternator on it wonder if it came with a bad regulator
@@knappfarms take an OHM meter and put between your battery terminal on the alternator and on your alternator wire and see if you have a draw that could be coming from the dash you might have a bad wire
I use this same picker....... travel is way to fast ! Shelling on the rows ! Corn cant even make it up the elevator ! Nothing should be bogged up !
I don't know if you check videos this old but I threw up one about picking corn and I had no idea there were so many experts on the subject.
Great equipment. How much corn did you pick?
In this video probably only 200 bushel still have maybe 350-400 to go we put up 14-1500 bushel in the crib and then have a couple hundred acres we combine
Thats a lot tractor for thatcorn picker
Never ran out of horsepower though
540 is the proper speed of the PTO@
I’m running it slower then that because it’s so old the 800 is based on the 1000 shaft so the 540 shaft is only spinning about 400-440
Picking a bit too fast for my liking
I bet your glow plugs are leaking through the key switch
No glow plugs on the 86 series
Kinda sloppy and busted bolt shortened the job. Like your speed shiftin’ !
You need to learn how to run a corn picker
The goal it to put corn it the wagon in a short period of time I got that done don’t have time all the time to take it slow
DO SO MANY COWS TO FEED EQATE TO SO MANY BUSHELS OF CORN TO GROW"
I’ll have to do the math for sure some time but I’d guess a half acre of good corn crop feeds a feed lot steer for one year
Low range 3rd gear
High range 6th gear
@@knappfarms ah ok nice
Slow down picking too fast
Got things to do and places to be
You're driving way too fast and you got the RPMs too high for that picker
It’s only about 400 RPMs to the picker and I’m running the same speed as the gathering chains
@@terrypotter4779 that's what I also said some kids are just don't get it
I mean if you watch the bolt shears because a gathering chain came off that happens when your using 40 year old chains that stretch out
But also if your gonna criticize leave more information to back it up what is the proper ground speed to rpm ratio you can’t just leave a blanket statement with no factual backing and expect everyone to go with it

Nope
Mate you need to look after your gear a bit better
It was in worst shape when I bought it for $300 I used what I can afford equipment isn’t cheap for a 24 year old guy trying to start a farm on his own
Pulling that picker and that big of a wagon that fast on wet ground is going to burn up the trans
I gotta ask this is a joke right? Never know with some of these people
Slow down!
go to 4th low and more trash will get out
We don’t mind the husk it just gets ground up as extra filler for the cattle feed
