  • The Faith Matters family lost a dear friend this week. Kate Holbrook passed away after a long battle with cancer. Kate was a graceful light in our lives. Her strength, her courage, her wisdom, her intelligence and her gentle manner will be with us forever. Our thoughts, prayers and determined support go out to our good friend Sam Brown, Kate’s forever companion, and to their three daughters.
In Kate’s memory and honor, we’re sharing this conversation that she had with Terryl Givens in 2018. The video was called “extraordinary women in Mormon history,” and Kate, of course, is one of them.
As managing historian of women’s history at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints history department, Kate wrote, studied, and interpreted history full-time. Her major research interests were religion, gender, and food. Her primary professional activity was to discover, encourage, and celebrate women’s flourishing in the scholarly and spiritual realms.
We’d encourage everyone who’d like to honor and further Kate’s legacy to donate to a scholarship fund that has been set up in her honor, and that was established by her, together with her family. It was Kate’s wish as she departed mortality that these funds serve to help the women of the Church to flourish in their scholarly and spiritual lives. Kate herself benefited from a similar gift (from Ruth Silver of Denver, Colorado) early in her scholarly career, when she and Sam had minimal financial resources, and she needed time and money to devote to the study of women and religion. She hoped that such giving would become more and more common over time.
To contribute, please head to kateholbrook.org/scholarship.
We love you, Kate, and we miss you.

I’m so sad that our world has lost Kate. Anytime I watched or listened to her, I learned so much. So grateful for what she did to bring women and our history into the light. This was a wonderful interview that I had never seen. Thank you for allowing us to hear from her again. Our thoughts and prayers are with her dear family. 😢

Thank you for remembering our dear sister Kate, she is such a gracious example. She helped my testimony grow by sharing her appreciating of the Book of Mormon in her own life, it helped me feel the Lord in the Book of Mormon. Also in her talk at the BYU Woman’s Conference when the world was in lock down in 2020. She said of messy history that often at the root of the mess is often caused by assumption. Her input in my somewhat unremarkable life ( thank you for rerunning this interview as you have reminded me the unremarkable is in a worldly sense, Thank-you) Kate has given me jewels that I can pull out when I struggle in parallel earthly relationships.

What an amazing life full of hope, faith and powerful ideas. We can continue to be blessed through her work and the talks about it that are extant.
I am so grateful for those resources, especially those where we can hear her voice and feel her faith

This was such a shock to see! Kate Holbrook has come to mean so much to me since I first heard her in the 2020 Women's Conference. I desperately took notes as she spoke and later went back to the recording to take more notes of that impactful and powerful message. Since then, any time I can, I listen to whatever she has online and soak her spirit up along with the wisdom that flows from her. I thought I had more time ... her poor family ... sending love. And thank you for posting this.

Faith came so easily to Kate, for which I have holy envy, but she was always so kind and understanding to those for whom faith is much more difficult. Everyone loved her, in large part because she loved everyone.
