    I have been coloring my beard for over 10 years. I have used many products. the men's product just don't work as well as the ladies. I use to have dark brown and now at 70, I would have WHITE hair. So i would recommend trying several different products to find out which one works best. The reason I use a women's product is that one does not have to use the entire product but use a glass to mix a small amount so that an expensive product can last months. I color every two weeks, use a beard conditioner often.

    The thing with colouring beards is that you don't have to overdo it, in terms of time, quantity and shade, it is just to soften grey hairs and level discolorations. You don't have to leave the product the time required, just a couple of minutes will do to give it a fresh look without anyone noticing. Don't forget to give the eyebrows a touch too.

In my late 30's I stated noticing that I have male pattern baldness up front. It doesn't bother me, but I'm not gonna lie, the thin eyebrows really do. I haven't done any research on this topic, but after reading your comment I figured you could possibly get me pointed in the right direction. I started going grey at 30. My beard was almost totally white by 45. I used to color it, because I felt like it aged me too much to have a white beard at such a young age. Recently though, I've embraced it, mostly just because I just don't enjoy the maintenance of keeping the color up. Having a full white beard at my age (54) DOES age me. It's undeniable. However, it's also kind of unique and unusual, and I've learned to love that.

I am looking to change schools and districts, and have wanted to reduce my gray so my potential employer does not think that I have one foot in the grave.

It looks more natural as well and i can get these anywhere even when I’m traveling . I have somme grey in my head and beard so i use both areas. Its a game changer. I also get over ten applications with one box . Maybe it doesn’t last quite as long but the most important thing is it looks 100 percent natural. I just picked up something called Volt. What I got is for short beards but works really well and is extremely easy to use. Why color it? My mustache has gone really light grey so it doesn't show up very well now. It's really simple to use, a brush that's like an eyelash brush for women. Shake it, brush/blend it through & you're done - no shower/washing it off, etc. I believe they have one like it for longer beards but I"m not sure (I shopped for it based on *my* beard type). It has to be done frequently but it's really easy to use and not all chem-land, more like how women use their eyelash brushes.

    Hey Matty!! Hi from a fellow Vancouverite!! I just found your channel recently when I decided to create my own beard oil, balm, butters, and washes, as I don't like the scents (and high cost) of most of the commercial ones. In my research, of course, the algorithm starts suggesting similar and your channel popped up. Thank you for ALL your great content!! Much appreciated and have already used some of your tips for shaping etc., and my beard is already looking better (self taught here so some professional input helps a lot!!)
    This was a great video.. The idea of using the semi-permanent over the permanent is a great tip for the top line as it will hopefully fade before the beard starts to look like it is floating (if one is very gray) the beard grows out before one has the chance to touch up the colour.
    Once my beard has grown out some, I may come by and have one of your senior barbers give me a professional baseline that I can maybe maintain at home. I am pretty good at DIY but not sure if I have shaped my outline properly so would like to see a professional shape it.
    My last comment is to thank you for the eye-candy. You are a handsome man to begin with, but seeing you shirtless out of the shower was quite a delightful addition... don't blush!! You are a sexy man and you should flaunt it...!! You got a sub from me!! (wink)

    Touch of Gray beard product is hard to find in local stores the past couple years. They used to all have it, now none of them do, particularly for the beard. I have to order online. I have more gray and white in my beard than I "feel," and also people confuse my son and I for brothers, so I don't want to look older than I feel, and my face looks younger for my age (no wrinkles other than around my eyes). That's why I use the Touch of Gray. I have no desire to pretend to be 20, so this product makes me look younger than my birth certificate, and more in line with how I feel. I started using the Touch of Gray for my hair too for the same reason. I get awesomely natural looking results from both products. Very happy with them.

    I love the way you scientifically explained this topic before doing it!
    I have been using the permanent M-35 for over a year now. If you want to use it to colour light, nearly transparent hair, like my weird-ass soul patch, be careful. *NEVER* leave it on for 5 minutes, especially if it contacts you skin. The light hairs will basically turn black, and the skin gets darker too. It will not wash out easily and you will look like an idiot for a week. I use it for 3 mins and that’s enough for me. If you do it for the first time, start with a shorter duration, you can always leave it on longer the next time.
    Also, the base colour seems to react with oxygen. If you only use a little bit every month it helps to use plastic wrap between the cap and the tube to seal it.

    • @matz4k
      @matz4k ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also my 3 minutes start with the first contact. As my area of application is so small it is just one or two swift brushes.

    • @mattyconradgrooming

    In your video I learned some interesting things that I did not know about hair at the molecular level. Thanks! I colored my hair and beard for years, making it dark brown. One Summer when I was 115 I just decided to cut off my long hair that I hadn't cut in 15 years and shave my beard off. Now seemingly just in the last 2 years my beard is gone blinding White, a term that I have come up with to describe it is going full Moses. I have not cut my beard in almost a year, not even trimming it for edging it. What's interesting is when I used to color and trim my beard I would get a lot of young guys saying awesome beard man. Now that I look like I'm going to land a sleigh on your roof and hand out presents I get young women complimenting me on my beard more than I do men. It's just kind of funny. I'm grateful that I still have hair on top and that my beard starts just below my eyes and goes all the way to my toes. LOL

    1) With Control GTX don't you have to constantly apply it throughout the week to maintain a particular color?
    2) Why did you use both?
    3) Can I just use the permanent color to cover up a couple patchy gray areas?
    4) Have you tried Simpler beard dye? If so how is it?
    Btw, great vid!

    • @mattyconradgrooming
      @mattyconradgrooming  ปีที่แล้ว

      1) you can definitely do that. It will make it progressively darker but it fades off fairly quickly.
      2) I used both as a blend. I don’t like applying permanent dye to hair that doesn’t need it.
      3) yes you can
      4) I haven’t tried it yet. But I just ordered some.

    My cheeks are super light and not as full, so this gave me the idea to just do the cheeks and the "mustache blending hairs" to really gage if I should go short or long for the time being. I'm not quite done filling in, but it's been getting a lot more full over the last 2 years.

    Using a woman's permanent hair dye works perfectly well on my beard, and I've never had the slightest skin reaction. Two tips: Use a tiny amount, as in the size of a bean for both the dye and peroxide.
    Secondly, leave it on for 15 mins max, then add a little water, massage the dye with your fingers, but don't rinse it off yet.
    Next add some shampoo and massage it in thoroughly, then rinse it all off and shampoo a second time. That way the dye won't stain your skin..

  • @whollybro
    @whollybro ปีที่แล้ว

    Great tips: using a brush and comb to apply, how to get deeper into the thick growth, touching up with permanent dye, how to keep the adjacent skin from getting dyed... I have been using JfM Control GX for about a year. I leave it on for 20-30 minutes without skin irritation and get a rich brown with natural irregularity. The colour lasts and only requires redoing every couple of weeks to cover new growth. I used JfM Beard&Mustache a couple of months ago. My beard turned nearly charcoal black despite using the medium dark brown shade. I followed the directions to wait 5 minutes after all the hair was coated, but it must have taken me 20 or more minutes to get it applied everywhere. I have gone back to Control GX. It's the best and there is no possibility for error.

    This is the video I've been looking for. I am substantially more gray, and the gray is in patches, almost like entire stripes of gray all the way down from cheek to the bottom. I am way nervous about a permanent color, but am interested in trying the semi permanent. I dont dislike my gray, just kinda want to tone it down a couple of notches. I have a fairly long beard so I wonder if you think there is enough product for a long beard in one unit.

    • @mattyconradgrooming
      @mattyconradgrooming  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A semi permanent will tone it down a bit. Try to apply it to the Grey patches first to give it longer to process on the parts you want darker.

    Just For Men likes to change up their boxes and marketing, even though the actual product doesn’t change. At one point on the box, they sold the beard and mustache dye as semi-permanent. I think the current box doesn’t actually make a claim one way or the other. The beard dye shampoo is definitely semi-permanent. The one issue I had with the shampoo is it is only shades of black. If you have a brown or blond color beard it will only add light amounts of black to your beard.

      i used henna for years until two things happened. The first, I went to a bar with lots of UV light. My beard looed purple. number to, i had more than 25% grey, and this is too much for Henna, and at the same time i developed a reaction to henna, so i had to stop. Henna can cause sunlight sensitivity in some, so its really important to do a sensitivity patch test

    I only dye using henna. Because that's the only all natural dye out there. Henna doesn't coat your hair follicles and prevent water from reaching them. Other chemical dyes will cost or cover your hair completely preventing water from touching it. So henna is the best

I find that going lighter gives you a more natural coloring because not all the hairs will be a uniform brown. when all the hairs are the same color it looks unnatural ... at leat to me. I can always tell who colors their beard if their beard hairs are all uniform in color.
