I have been coloring my beard for over 10 years. I have used many products. the men's product just don't work as well as the ladies. I use to have dark brown and now at 70, I would have WHITE hair. So i would recommend trying several different products to find out which one works best. The reason I use a women's product is that one does not have to use the entire product but use a glass to mix a small amount so that an expensive product can last months. I color every two weeks, use a beard conditioner often.

I started going grey at 30. My beard was almost totally white by 45. I used to color it, because I felt like it aged me too much to have a white beard at such a young age. Recently though, I've embraced it, mostly just because I just don't enjoy the maintenance of keeping the color up. Having a full white beard at my age (54) DOES age me. It's undeniable. However, it's also kind of unique and unusual, and I've learned to love that.

I cant use any of the beard colors as they cause me serious irritation that can last for weeks. I finally tried the women’s hair color n a box going with dark blond. Finally no more irritation. It looks more natural as well and i can get these anywhere even when I’m traveling . I have somme grey in my head and beard so i use both areas. Its a game changer. I also get over ten applications with one box . Maybe it doesn’t last quite as long but the most important thing is it looks 100 percent natural. I used Garnier 70 dark natural blonde and leave it on 30-40 mins. But i have brown hair.

Thanks for the video! I only have a goatee, but it is long (think ZZ Top or Whisker Wars). I am 52 and do not mind the gray that I have in my whiskers, but I do realize that in my profession (teacher), there is quite a bit of ageism toward men who are not in admin after age 40 (at least locally). I am looking to change schools and districts, and have wanted to reduce my gray so my potential employer does not think that I have one foot in the grave.
I do believe that I will leave my coloring to a professional, as my whiskers are too long...and I would make a mess. Thanks for making me not feel silly for even considering this.

The thing with colouring beards is that you don't have to overdo it, in terms of time, quantity and shade, it is just to soften grey hairs and level discolorations. You don't have to leave the product the time required, just a couple of minutes will do to give it a fresh look without anyone noticing. Don't forget to give the eyebrows a touch too.

Just for men has a lot os chemicals that caused me allergic reaction in my skin, besides it generates an artificial aspect. I highly recommend to dye your beard with herbal based-products (Henna-Indigo, etc.) which are kind of softer for the health and it gives a more natural looking. Good job, Matty!

I just picked up something called Volt. What I got is for short beards but works really well and is extremely easy to use. Why color it? My mustache has gone really light grey so it doesn't show up very well now. It's really simple to use, a brush that's like an eyelash brush for women. Shake it, brush/blend it through & you're done - no shower/washing it off, etc. I believe they have one like it for longer beards but I"m not sure (I shopped for it based on *my* beard type). It has to be done frequently but it's really easy to use and not all chem-land, more like how women use their eyelash brushes.

Hey Matty!! Hi from a fellow Vancouverite!! I just found your channel recently when I decided to create my own beard oil, balm, butters, and washes, as I don't like the scents (and high cost) of most of the commercial ones. In my research, of course, the algorithm starts suggesting similar and your channel popped up. Thank you for ALL your great content!! Much appreciated and have already used some of your tips for shaping etc., and my beard is already looking better (self taught here so some professional input helps a lot!!)
This was a great video.. The idea of using the semi-permanent over the permanent is a great tip for the top line as it will hopefully fade before the beard starts to look like it is floating (if one is very gray) the beard grows out before one has the chance to touch up the colour.
Once my beard has grown out some, I may come by and have one of your senior barbers give me a professional baseline that I can maybe maintain at home. I am pretty good at DIY but not sure if I have shaped my outline properly so would like to see a professional shape it.
My last comment is to thank you for the eye-candy. You are a handsome man to begin with, but seeing you shirtless out of the shower was quite a delightful addition... don't blush!! You are a sexy man and you should flaunt it...!! You got a sub from me!! (wink)
Take care my friend and thanks again for everything!!

Touch of Gray beard product is hard to find in local stores the past couple years. They used to all have it, now none of them do, particularly for the beard. I have to order online. I have more gray and white in my beard than I "feel," and also people confuse my son and I for brothers, so I don't want to look older than I feel, and my face looks younger for my age (no wrinkles other than around my eyes). That's why I use the Touch of Gray. I have no desire to pretend to be 20, so this product makes me look younger than my birth certificate, and more in line with how I feel. I started using the Touch of Gray for my hair too for the same reason. I get awesomely natural looking results from both products. Very happy with them.

Great tips: using a brush and comb to apply, how to get deeper into the thick growth, touching up with permanent dye, how to keep the adjacent skin from getting dyed... I have been using JfM Control GX for about a year. I leave it on for 20-30 minutes without skin irritation and get a rich brown with natural irregularity. The colour lasts and only requires redoing every couple of weeks to cover new growth. I used JfM Beard&Mustache a couple of months ago. My beard turned nearly charcoal black despite using the medium dark brown shade. I followed the directions to wait 5 minutes after all the hair was coated, but it must have taken me 20 or more minutes to get it applied everywhere. I have gone back to Control GX. It's the best and there is no possibility for error.

In your video I learned some interesting things that I did not know about hair at the molecular level. Thanks! I colored my hair and beard for years, making it dark brown. One Summer when I was 115 I just decided to cut off my long hair that I hadn't cut in 15 years and shave my beard off. Now seemingly just in the last 2 years my beard is gone blinding White, a term that I have come up with to describe it is going full Moses. I have not cut my beard in almost a year, not even trimming it for edging it. What's interesting is when I used to color and trim my beard I would get a lot of young guys saying awesome beard man. Now that I look like I'm going to land a sleigh on your roof and hand out presents I get young women complimenting me on my beard more than I do men. It's just kind of funny. I'm grateful that I still have hair on top and that my beard starts just below my eyes and goes all the way to my toes. LOL

I personally found 1 color less than what you think is best practice M45(Dark Brown) in JFM beard color is perfect for me. Any darker and it looks really fake. Almost painted on. I leave it in for 15-18 mins. I've had countless compliments with a dyed beard and I am usually transparent (jokingly) about it not being natural. The permeant does slowly come out. Usually 2-3 weeks you'll notice it and you can dye again. Highly recommended!

    @jerrypomroy2375 ปีที่แล้ว +1

First, I’d like to start by saying that I wish Matty was local to me because he’d be who I go to for sure!
I’ve been dying my beard for about the last 4yrs. I’m turning 48 in a few days & have only had my beard for a little over 8 years. I get streaks of white that run from my lower lip down my chin along with some stragglers in my mustache. If the streaks were symmetrical I probably wouldn’t mind, but they are not. I have 2 streaks on my left & 1 on the right. So I dye it. I also hit my eyebrows which are starting to lose their color.
I use Just For Men, Light Red Brown (M-27) which has been perfect for me. I have a little bit of ginger (strawberry brown?) and in the past I’d have to mix different colors to achieve something close but not quite because it would lack the red tones. I only blend the gray to get rid of the streaks for a more natural look.
PS - Some guys will neglect the eyebrows & I find that giving them back a little more color makes my eye color pop & look a little more youthful.

I am way nervous about a permanent color, but am interested in trying the semi permanent. I dont dislike my gray, just kinda want to tone it down a couple of notches. I have a fairly long beard so I wonder if you think there is enough product for a long beard in one unit.

Since I have dark brown hair I usually use J4M that's at least two shades lighter, usually M-35. I find that going lighter gives you a more natural coloring because not all the hairs will be a uniform brown. when all the hairs are the same color it looks unnatural ... at leat to me. I can always tell who colors their beard if their beard hairs are all uniform in color.

Can you possibly do a video where you try different brands of hair color and see which one works the best? I know Just for Men is probably the most popular. I have tried Simpler hair color which works pretty well as well as Cremo when they made it and about to try True Sons I think it is called. The ones I have tried, you don't have to mix, they either mix as you apply them to your beard or are already mixed. I think that might be a good video to do to try to find the hair color product that may work the best and lasts the longest or are all about the same.

I have a short beard and I would like to fix the gray every now and then - a whole squirt bottle of mixed chemicals is overkill.
What I would need/want is two packets like fast food ketchup I could mix in a frothing bowl and then apply. One could be the desired colour and the other the activator, sold separately!.
    The product I used had:
    the box
    terrible disposable gloves
    squirt bottle with activator
    color in metal tube
huge paper of instructions in at least dozen languages.

It just seems like all the beard dye I've ever used is diluted brown and makes the white look ashy taupey and almost purplish. The only good result I've had is dying the white brown then bleaching it. But the bleach burns my skin too much to maintain that color plus the bleach makes my beard coarse and brittle. Is there no pigment that's actually a blond color with a gold undertone? Everything is ashy or red.
