I play horn and our band director put us in the middle of the alto section. he split them and out us in the middle. There are 6 altos and three horns. But i wish horns had a solo. One of my favorite songs to play on horn was arabian dances. We had melodie for like 10 measures
As a former alto sax player and current trombone player, I would have loved to get a solo like that when I was just starting out. Flutes, clarinets, and trumpets get most solos, so I'm glad an arranger is giving background instruments something fun.
You know as a clarinet player I never really realized that. That’s because in my band the director gives the clarinets and flutes a melody to switch a song for trumpets and saxophones a melody and 2 songs for lower instruments and percussion( how they are split up is always different) so I didn’t know that.
my band teacher has shown me a piece with a clarinet solo and then ends up not letting us play it, it was the first clarinet solo i have personally heard.
We played this for our seniors last year for their senior song. We all cried at the end knowing we would miss them. It was so sad but heartwarming at the same time
I actually liked the sax solo in "How Far I'll Go" because it imitates Auli'i's voice very well. Sure it would have sounded better on flute or clarinet but I felt that Bocook's interpretation of the part felt it should be.
I play clarinet and as much as I would love a solo (we don’t get them often in middle school bands) it just wouldn’t sound the same and I think sax is the best option here
I am just happy that they included the baritone horn/euphonium part. I play that instrument and I feel like it is not appreciated as much. People mistake it as a tuba, and a couple of times, a trumpet. And the alto sax part is amazing. Why you peeps hatin' on it?
dam ppl call euphoniums' trumpets. ive gotten my trumpet called a trombone before... and sax (tbh tho i dont blame them because the cases in my school for trumpet and alto sax look very similar). ive also gotten my french horn called trombone
I’m in jazz band rn, and my conductor gave me a flute piece. It’s practically the trumpet part. Is all flute music like this? I wouldn’t know bc I’m percussion.
Played this song for our last concert of the Year... Everyone was so sad :( Everyone did their best and we sounded amazing. We played 7 songs in total... Moana, Jurassic Park, and How to Train Your Dragon are just a few....
Woah hooray 1 MILLION VIEWS. Moana was so exciting, I think it was fabulous! Class of 2022, but I miss my 7th grade year in 2017. Cheers for new times!!
Yeah, the problem with my school band is that a large amount of those in it are young and inexperienced so we have to keep the level relatively low which means repetitive pieces.
Can always count on Jay Bocook to create great "Movie Suite" arrangements for young concert bands. I can imagine this one will be played quite a bit in Spring concerts this year.
I'm assuming they chose to use Alto saxophone for the solo because moana herself has an Alto voice?? did anyone stop and think of that? not every female is soprano Alto sax has the near same range as an Alto voice. I'm a male and have the range of a Baritone - Tenor sax. so that's the parts I sing.
I'm reading the comments and the majority of them are people calling out people hating on the alto sax solo but i don't actually see people hating on the alto sax solo
So much hate on the alto sax solo , but as an alto sax player you rarely get solos!!And the solo sounded so great and fun to play.So how about we all just calm down and admire the music that was produced.I still LOVE the solo as a sax, so fun to play ,love the solo...
I’m about to leave for Disney with my high school band, oh and I’m an alto sax on the first part. I’m so nervous about the solo I hope another sax does it😭😭😅😅

Finally! A grade 3 piece where the Alto Saxes and Horns don't have identical parts!!!
Landon Geitzenauer i play horn and i am glad that we don't have same parts
I do really wish the horns also had the solo though
I play horn and our band director put us in the middle of the alto section. he split them and out us in the middle. There are 6 altos and three horns. But i wish horns had a solo. One of my favorite songs to play on horn was arabian dances. We had melodie for like 10 measures
LOL IKR!
This is also one of the few moments that Tenor Sax's "shared part" status is good. It carries the first song's melody almost the entire time.
As a former alto sax player and current trombone player, I would have loved to get a solo like that when I was just starting out. Flutes, clarinets, and trumpets get most solos, so I'm glad an arranger is giving background instruments something fun.
fstlthawkeye I - Why would a woodwind player such as your former self ever switch to a lowly brass instrument?
You know as a clarinet player I never really realized that. That’s because in my band the director gives the clarinets and flutes a melody to switch a song for trumpets and saxophones a melody and 2 songs for lower instruments and percussion( how they are split up is always different) so I didn’t know that.

Thats not necessarily true.
It would have been higher pitched most likely, which does not match Auli'i's voice/tone

I play Euphonium but yeah, the trombon part is my too :p
This piece brings me a lot of nostalgia. My school band played this near the end of my junior year and it is my favorite memory with the band
Playing this in eighth grade! Probably to hardest price we have played so far i just got it so I gotta listen to it to actually get the rythem

Love it! My school played it and the alto sax solo rocked.
my high school band played this at our spring concert last year. I think it was one hell of a way to end the school year

same but in 2018

The alto sax solo was perfectly fine. The only better instrument for such an alto solo is an alto trombone which is too rare to include in this piece.
Flugelhorn? Tenor/alto Eb horn?
@@RuigekerelBut they are also rare.
