The metaphor of color is central to North Indian raga. The idea for "The Color of the Melody" project is to take principles of raga and use them to create music for polyphonic overtone singing, comparing the "color" of the different raag. There are ten short pieces, with one raag from each of the ten thaat (modes) in Hindustani music. I sing two contrapuntal musical lines, fundamentals and overtones, creating a musical texture that is harmonic as well as melodic. These pieces are not raga performances per se, but are true to the essential features of traditional raag: thaat, arohi/avarohi, vadi/samvadi, pakad, rasa, and time of day.
