  • What happens to the plastic we throw away? Dr. Medha Tadpatrikar shows us a fantastic innovation that allows us to "recover" plastic by converting it to fuel. Witnessing the death of deer due to plastic ingestion was the catalyst for Medha to begin working on waste plastic and segregation at source.
Under her leadership, The Keshav Sita trust collects waste plastic. Till date, more than 200 metric tonnes of plastic has been collected and saved from the landfill. She is also instrumental in developing the technology that recovers usable fuel from waste plastic.
At TEDxPICT, Medha will be talking in depth about the process used to make this fuel and the ways in which we can contribute to reducing plastic waste in smarter and efficient way. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Great work! I am curious however, will the product fuel contain much of hazardous aromatic compounds if we feed the machine with aromatic polymer, e.g. polyurethane, polystyrene? Is the fuel going to emit toxic gas like what we are told a plastic would do when we burn it, e.g. dioxin, furan?

Which type of plastic produce petrol and which one produce diesel. Because there is high and low densities plastics.

    • @45H16E

The final product doesn't rely on the type of plastic it's a function of the processing machine. some rely on additives after processing to create fuel (diesel or gas)

Pyrolosis has been around for years now, with seemingly more poorer countries like India ahead of the West! Why? Cynar was a company in Ireland doing this on a good-sized scale (there's a great Al-Jazeera YT vid about them), with plan to open plants in the UK - they went into liquidation in 2016. Why? I'm not really a conspiracy-theorist, but we don't see the oil companies, who are well-placed financially and from a resource POV, investing in this type of initiative...

We need to stop trashing our beautiful planet. It is the only home we have. We must take better care of it. Let's ban all kinds of single-use plastics and clean up our oceans and landfills. We should all switch to eco-friendly and biodegradable products. We have to keep our environments clean for future generations.
